I just picked up Peggle, iFighter, Terminator, and Katamari. I got Peggle cause everyone equates it with crack (how could you ever go wrong with crack), iFighter cause I liked the demo and it’s down to .99, Terminator cause I wanna try it out, and Katamari cause it’s Katamari. After I get some time with them I’ll post my thoughts. Well, I’ll leave Peggle be because everyone has already chimed in but the rest I’ll cover. I saw Sonic but passed until 2 arrives or Sonic and Knuckles pops up. I’ve got a score to settle with 2 because I never beat it.
Wow, I’m so excited to see iPhone/Touch games getting deeper. My Brute and Beat Rider sound awesome. I especially like how Beat Rider gets around the denied access to the library. Rise of Lost Empires and Mass Effect have me excited as well, not for the games but the possibility they pose for more games to come. I really want to see a long full length game that can be played on the phone. I’m sure there are some technical hurdles that have to be jumped, but I would love to see an expansive free roaming 3d game for the platform.
On another note I’ve spent some time with the games I downloaded yesterday.
Katamari - I was expecting it to play too slowly and for the music to be dumbed down in quality. Not so. The only issue I have with it so far is the lag experienced when sizing up but it really doesn’t affect the gameplay all that much. I was also expecting not to be able to run with the katamari, but I was proven wrong there as well.
iFighter - If you want a cheap, hard, old school top down shmup try this one. I also recommend you start out on easy and work your way to a harder difficulty. The tilt to move controls are responsive and work very well. It calibrates automatically at the beginning of every level depending on how you’re holding it. So be sure that you’re in your preferred neutral position until you start moving and everything should flow pretty smoothly for you. At .99 cents right now it’s a steal. It was at 1.99, so I don’t know if this is a temp or permanent drop.
Terminator - it’s aiight for .99 cents. I’ve only played level 1, and the auto aim kinda makes it easy. I imagine as I get to higher up levels the difficulty will rise. Level 1 just has a bunch of endos walking at you like zombies and every once in a while they decide to shoot. I guess you’re supposed to manage your ammo, but they do a good job at dropping enough to make your way through the level with just one weapon type.
Peggle - Oh you know…you know about Peggle. Shits fantastic! I’ve played about an hour and the cam and music at the end still crack me up. On the surface watching someone else play or a video it looks meh, til you pick it up. It sucks you in.
If you want a damn good shmup I suggest Siberian Strike. It’s on sale for $0.99 as well and is a damn good game.
I played the Katamari demo but I found the controls to be way too wonky. I had difficulty but I’m sure I could get used to them, to me it’s not worth $7.99 though.
Also I tried Glandarius Wing Strike and was not impressed.
I"ll start off with a few quick notes on Clue.
I enjoyed it. I won’t go in depth with explanation of the gameplay (I fucking hate reviews that do that) I’ll just straight to positive and negative notes.
(-) Each “mission” is timed and it seems it’s timed perfectly to leave you no fuck up possible. When you examine the wrong thing or talk to someone accidentally again, you lose time which pretty much guarantee there will be another clue you’ll miss since you won’t have time. This means some missions I had to do more than once to get a feel a what items I needed to examine so I could come back around and get them all on one or two walk throughs of the house (moving from room to room is your main time killer).
(+) Despite sticking to a similar storyline, each of them do have different endings; storyline cues and plotlines will be randomly attributed to other character so it’s always fun to go back to a previous one and do it again
(-) It will make you think. The first few missions might serve you some answers on a silver platter but towards the end when everything must start from a “Ok so if she was here…then that means” and it makes it really interesting.
(-/+) I wasn’t sure how to qualify this but the length of the game. I bought it friday night and I finished it saturday evening. Then again most people Iphone gaming don’t sit at home playing this, you get it in 20 minute increments in the commute or while taking a shit. So in that respect I’m leaning towards +.
In the end I’d say it’s worth it. It’s not a Killer App like Zenonia but it’s really nice to see EA testing the waters and trying out different things.
Isotope: A Space Shooter just got a lite version. Full version is $2.99 but I would suggest the lite version. So far a really competent twin stick shooter.
a fun little platformer when you auto-run and you tilt from side to side to avoid obstacles and press the screen to jump. Not a dealbreaker but definately worth a dollar Cooking Staris now $0.99
-I find this one to be much better than cooking mama in both the variety of tasks performed and difficulty level. It’s a tad hard to get used to some of the controls at first though. Nanofighteris now $0.99
-a fun and somply twin stick shooter. Controls really well.
New releases:
Knights Onrush ($4.99)
a new take on the Defend your Castle genre. It’s the same concept but much more in depth and some of the best art you’ve seen for an Iphone game yet.
Mummy’s revenge ($0.99)
This is the same concept as Zombieville USA, slide scrolling with weapons survivor. It’s not a huge step above Zombieville but if you enjoyed shooting zombies, you’ll enjoy this.
Sims 3 ($9.99)
The much awaited sims sequel is out and from what I’ve read, is a great addition to the Iphone. I won’t go into details simply because the audience on SRK isn’t a Sims playing audience.
when is the update again? my iphone has been jailbroken since i got it so i haven’t updated in the past two or three updates, lol.
too scared to lose everything i have.
After further play, I can say that terminator is crap. Story mode is just the same level five times over with dif objectives. Peggle has me stuck on the third master level with the spinning double helix.
damn knights onrush is visually impressive. adding that to my stuff-to-get-except-im-trying-not-to-get-carried-away-so-i-wont-get-it-just-yet list.
i have a really stupid question. lets say i have an ipod touch with a bunch of paid apps. if i get an iphone can i put my paid apps on there or is there some limit to the # of installs you get?
I’m fairly sure you can put them on. I doubt you would still use your Ipod touch but if you used both you’d have to use the same applications on both, since it’s based off your computer, it syncs the same list.
Don’t let the horribly translated app name fool you, this game is damn fine.
Concept is simple: you have three floors with people to save and have obstacles like break doors, extinguish fires etc and your fighters can only perform one action at a time.
Honestly I’ve rarely seen the presentation so well refined for an Iphone game. The graphics are all totally new and impressive in their cutesy look. Each character has his own little voice clips, music is really engrossing and fun to listen to.
I have nothing but good things to say about it, and it’s currently 50% off for $1.99. It’s a game you can easily spend 30 minutes or just do one mission for 2 minutes on. Highly recommended.
I couldn’t agree with you more. Games that require virtual d-pads just don’t feel right. There needs to be that tactile boundaries of where the buttons are, otherwise, it’s too hard to tell whether you’re pressing the right button.
IMO, most of the gaming in general on the iPhone is lame. Games that work with traditional inputs don’t lend themselves well to the iPhone. There are some games that can be ported to touch & tilt controls, but not many.
I think the best iPhone/Touch games are the ones that are designed for it specifically. Newtonica’s a good example of that. It’s simple, elegant, and puts the touch control to good use without going overboard.
Puzzle games seems to work well enough on it as well. I bought Tetris, and the control is surprisingly good, until you get to the higher levels, then it becomes a hinderance since you can’t rotate and move a piece at the same time.
