Iowa: Maize of Defeat

No thread, I just post in here all the time. Maybe I should start posting tourney threads. Anyway, tourneys are every Tuesday, 6:00, at Comic World, 4031 Pennsylvania, Dubuque, IA 52002. Entry fee is $3, all goes to the pot now that we saved up and bought our Evo monitor. Format is usually round-robin/king of the hill. Everyone plays each other and you get seeded according to how you did. Then, (if there are 8 people), 8th plays 7th, winner of that plays 6th, winner of that plays 5th, and so on. With 6 or more I do prizes for top 3, otherwise it’s top 2. We only do double-elimination if there are more than 8 people.

Speaking of Tuesday tourneys…DBQ MVC3 Weekly #12 results:
1st - Hogosha (Ryu/Storm/Morrigan)
2nd - Keela (Mags/Tron/Doom)
3rd - Olli (Wolvie/Zero/Task)
4th - MysticBill (SheHulk/Dante/Akuma, Wesker/Dante/Phoenix)
5th - Kintehr (Dante/Shuma/Dorm)
6th - DTJB (Deadpool/Sentinel/Skrull)
7th - Chevy (Shuma/Chun/Akuma) (unsure on the order)

I’d like to point out that Keela seeded 4th and had to fight through Kintehr, MysticBill, and Olli before playing against me, which ended up being a total of like 15 games in a row. I’d also like to point out that Kintehr’s taking games off me like it’s her job. Everyone’s getting scary at this game.

I may have said this before, but it’s true. Kintehr is Sanford’s worst nightmare.

Oh yeah absolutely I know Esom, I’ll have to make sure to stop by and see you guys.

2nd’ed. Good to see Bill and Chevy again too, thanks for coming~ (And maybe I should know, but…) Who’s Sanford?

GGs to everyone. There is a very small margin of skill between us all. I played my hardest and was still beaten. I had a lot of fun though. I will be back in July sometime when i am working again.

Forgot to mention. As of last night, monitor is completely paid off. So, from here on out, no more equipment fund. I’ll save up for a PS3 on my own. Once I get one, I might go back to this idea for a second monitor. We’ll see.

Dude charge a small venue for your efforts, you deserve it.

It’s weird when I think that people charge venue fees for the sake of making a profit, even a little one. It’s completely alien to the old days when smaller TO’s would not only make nothing running a tournament but would also take a huge loss with renting a venue, getting equipment, and in some cases offering up a pot bonus out of their own pocket. Case in point, the DBQ BBQ series, I put up a total of (I think) $300 out of pocket (and whatever I spent making breakfast for the Des Moines crew :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: ) for pot bonuses and prizes. Even if I somehow win a tournament I run, I usually feel guilty as hell not putting the money toward something for the community.

When I travel, however, and win…rest assured, I’m all about that fight money when low-tier pays me for my efforts. :stuck_out_tongue:

Edit - That’s not meant to come off as preachy to anyone who HAS walked away from running a tourney and made money off of it. It’s a hard, exhausting, and (sometimes) thankless job.

Agreed. I keep nothing from the monthlies. The only reason I charge a venue fee is because the venue has asked for something, albeit very little. For MOK, everything that goes past my own costs for the event will go directly to pot bonuses. As much as I love EVO, I’m not a fan of the $50 venue fee. I think that’s kinda BS.

90% sure I’m driving to KC this weekend. Scott, you still down to come along? My car is looking pretty full atm. Jay and one other possibly will be going at least as far as Des Moines.

Probably leave Friday evening for Des Moines- stay there, drive Saturday, drive back to Des Moines- stay there again. Drive back Sunday.

Actually, I just got a different (better) position at work, but it requires me to work one weekend day. I chose Sundays. :frowning:

Sanford Kelly is a well known player in the East Coast, I think he’s from the East Coast. Dude recently got notice for voicing his blunt opinions on Marvel 3, largely negative opinions since he’s a hardcore Marvel #2 player, ‘rah rah rah, mash 4 buttons and win, waah waah waah’. What REALLY raised a lot of peoples eyebrows, and lost a lot of respect from me was when he said something along the lines of ‘a girl could pick this game up and win.’

Well that is indeed an unclassy and illogical comment, fie on him then. It sounds like I’d have to pick up MvC2 to steal his manhood.

Women are inferior. I thought this was established, like, centuries ago. How are we still having this conversation?

Oh fiiine. Even if I win the game, I’d not win your hearts, I see.

(changing subject) I’ll probably make it to the July CR tourney, along with a monitor+PS3 setup.

Friggin sweet. We’re gonna have, like, 10 setups. Which is perfect. Casuals while the tournies are running. Melikes

A wild Ngamer3k appears!

Whats CR? Cedar Rapids?

I’m guessing you are not from Iowa. Just a guess…
