That MK glitch is HILARIOUS. But it’s about as game-breaking as Gen’s focus stance glitch (unless you’re Baraka playing Cage and he X-Rays you, apparently).

lol at Salty Bill’s tactic towards the end of the night: if one character is left and they get touched, just pause and go straight to character select. I actually think that’s a pretty solid tactic, saves some time and also reps that new name! Too good. Also, still lol’ing at how much Salty Bill hates me mashing legs and nothing else.
I feel too comfortable with Mags, I gotta get him back on point for sure. Also, I’m beginning to believe that Mags actually is the best character in the game as well (at least if you have HELLA tight execution) - Phoenix probably either tied or in a very close second…

Phoenix is far and away more busted than mags. Fly glitch and her xfc lvl3 game are untouchable if the person playing her isn’t a mouth-breather. Now when they finally fix that bullshit, Mags is definitely a candidate for top. He’s for sure in that elite top 5 group right now.
Hopefully the game sees more updates, only this time hopefully it’s updates that ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING USEFUL FOR BALANCE.

I don’t know man - think about this: Phoenix cannot/should not be used as an assist outside of juggles, she can’t be used in any position outside of anchor so she typically doesn’t get to take advantage of assists, she kind of limits your use of xfc outside of lvl 3, she drastically limits the use of your other characters meter, she’ll get snapped in and you gotta deal with that, too.
Mags, on the other hand can be used on point (taking full advantage of assists immediately), 2nd or anchor and can kill from any touch anywhere on screen with any amount of meter - by HIMSELF (of course, you gotta have hella tight execution to do this), he also never needs xfc. He has excellent mobility (flight, awesome crouch dashing), keep away (EMD) and pressure (tri-jump is hella good)
I used to think Phoenix was the best, but I’m really thinking Mags is stronger now - especially with good assists.
Phoenix completely forces the opponent to play a very specific way. She’s certainly not as well rounded as Mags,but if you let a team with her on it continue to just live, she’ll get 5 meters easy, and then you are forced to fight a character who can play 0 risk chip damage against everyone, and had impassive toreact to mixups that leave her completely at advantage and do like 25% chip if you do geuss correctly. Not to even mention that everyone its still sleeping on regular phoenix, who honestly is probably at least mid tier on her ownjust due to the stupidity of her fireball + teleport stuff and the fact that her low health means almost nothing at this point.

Exactly. I’m not disputing that Mags has more uses than phoenix, in fact many characters are better well rounded than phoenix. But while mags can be very scary in the right hands, he still does take risks to play his game. Dark phoenix on the other hand controls basically the entire screen for what is essentially no risk. The fact that people have learned how to make teams that compliment phoenix’s gameplan (build 5, I CAN’T CNTRL IT, MIMIMIMIMIMIMIMIMIMIM, xfc or hard tag out til only char left). Has only made her better. In fact ironically enough Mags is one of the best teammates for phoenix, because he builds meter so quickly and effectively with his best combos.
Phoenix is far and away the strongest character in the game. I’m not saying she’s strong for the right reasons, but the vast majority of the entire cast is almost completely free for Dark Phoenix.

With the question I asked about the Dub-town tourney, two things. I realize everyone is going to have their favorite game they really want to see featured, but I’m going to go with popular vote. Right now, popular vote goes to Tekken Tag because I’ve seen first hand how big it still is, especially in C.R. Unless I see this page or my PM box get flooded with demands to feature a game from the options I gave out, I just assume its the one or two individuals who want to play. Same reason I didn’t list GG as an option; until I hear otherwise, I’ll just assume two people are still hype about it. Now Vampire Savior may not be as big as Marvel but I know enough people will play it. Bottom line is, I want the venue people to see how big this can be (again, IF this EVER happens). I’m not confident enough to feature a game for the main schedule and have it turn out to be two guys in the corner isolated from everyone else. I’ll see what I can do about side tourneys but otherwise, my mind is already made up. If you want CVS2, MVC2, GG-AC, or hell, AH3 as the 6th spot, convince me you want it.
Reason I didn’t put Blazblue as an option. I realize that’s still popular in some areas, but I’d rather feature games I’m willing to play. Selfish yes, but I don’t see the point in buying a game for a tourney that I’ll never touch again afterwards. The only options are to let the venue provide systems for the game through a retailer like V G Etc., which I have no idea if they’ll REALLY go through with that because I’m sure they have no idea what DLC is, and if we run it, I’d like to have those 4 other characters as well for anyone who wants them. Or let everyone else bring a system with downloaded characters installed. The problems I see with that is not everyone wants those 4 extras and I’m not sure who’d be willing to support Blazblue by themselves if I’m not willing to support it.
Nothing is set in stone (still no date set) so we have plenty of time to talk about it all.
No ones cares about BB, it’s especially dead right now because CS2 hasn’t dropped. You aren’t losing anything by not having it. And I’m guessing you prolly just didn’t realize that me making a joke about having gear at every iowa tourney is a running gag. I’m the old man who was good at that game, I always make cracks about it being repped. I better than anyone know how dead the scene is for it.
That being said if you’re only goal is to show how full a venue you can get, you run smash, and i think we all know the ramifications of that choice.
Just run whatever is conducive to the scene there. As long as you have Marvel and 4 you’re going to get at least some kind of turnout regardless.
I’m getting more to the opinion that Phoenix = Hilde. Dumb and arguably the best in the game, but not broken. Make no mistake, if you don’t play around the fact that she’s on the team she WILL rape your face, just as not playing around Hilde will equal an easy ring out from nearly anywhere on the screen.
But the fact of the matter is that the best Phoenix player in the country, Clockwork, isn’t winning against the best players of other characters. That says something.
So, to put it a little harshly, it’s a bunch of people complaining about a character two months into a game because it’s an easier way to win for most people than actually learning how to play the game, just as it’s easy for me to go to tournaments and beat people better than me with Hilde (or Kilik’s Asura Derp) in SC4. Until I play people that know the Hilde match-up, like Jimmy Choi or SaltyBill from Madison, and they just kick me all day because IT’S WHAT YOU DO.
Tuesday night, I played Chris/Haggar/Phoenix against Olli to help him with the match-up. It slowly went from me winning for free to, eventually, him snapping the bitch in and mixing up with Wolverine until she died. And then he did it again. And again. Every round after that. Because Wolverine WILL open you up at some point in time. And then, wow, I’m using two characters that aren’t very good with all that meter I earned. Haggar gets a whopping 80-100k more damage, if that, and has next to no DHC potential. Chris has a LVL3 that isn’t BAD but isn’t GOOD either. Haggar’s LVL3 is a joke, especially when he’s by himself. I loved watching him beat me because it showed his willingness to adapt rather than throw his hands up and say “she’s busted”.
Sound a little preachy? Not my intent. But whenever I see her now I think of Hilde, and the Calibur community reacted to Hilde in the dumbest of fashions. So make someone in your community learn how to play as Phoenix. Then play them for 30 games straight.
And walk away a better man.
Venue finally sent a message back and they want to meet up next week to discuss setting a date. I’m gonna push for a Saturday and the only other event I need to work around is Keits’ tourney. Let me know what else to think about, mah birffday maybe?:party: That and V.G. Etc. is willing to act as a sponsor and provide games and systems. I’m also talking to a local stereo/TV store about providing monitors. Anyone else is willing to bring their stuff of course since I don’t know if the game store is willing to pay for Blonde Jill and Squid or if TV store has enough monitors that will be up to everyone’s standards. I’ll keep you guys posted.
