2v2 Mystery Tournament. C’MON, MAN. Give me a 20% and I’ll die a happy man.
Every weekend I’m going to be working on my parents house, not really my decision.
I’m new here. I live in Des Moines (well, until end of July anyway). I don’t have a car and my TV has a delay + internet is not good so I don’t play online. Is there any upcoming fun in Des Moines?
Jokers monthly is on july 21st and i’m running a tourney for ssf4 and mk9 in prairie city june 29th. i could (possibly) give you a ride to either if you are interested.
Tourney thread for Joker’s monthly. RSVP’s would be appreciated.
Had a lot of fun at FRAGfinity. Always good to see everybody.
Also shoutouts to Hung, it was nice meeting you. Hope you had a good time, even if you might not have expected hanging out at steak n shake til 3 am lol.
Results from the Iowa Monthly yesterday at Fragfinity X. Everything’s based on memory so it’s only top 4 for now (aside from Mystery).
Sounded like a good time!
MOK 2 is officially a GO!
Is that game list set in stone? Persona 4 will be out by then and stands to have a very large following going, plus KoF has consistently broke double digit entries at the cedar rapids tourneys.
Nope. That’s just the list I was FOR SURE I was going to have. I kept going back and forth with KoF. I’m thinking I’ll eventually add it, but wanted to see how it does post-Evo. You’ll notice there are other “popular” games that aren’t on there, SfxT and MK being two I can think of off the top of my head. I def won’t have SFxT, and MK is kind of on the decline, especially in the Midwest.
I can say that I for one won’t be there if the current game list rides.
better hope we do have kof i was talking to some of the stl guys that if we did had this tournament going again they were gonna bring some kof heads including that sparkster guy that placed top 8 in kof at ufgt 8. Also i fear for the fact that theres a good chance that season beatings will be in that month it would take away potential guys that could show up for mok
Scott - Few things.
- I just wanna confirm that you’re having me run the Mystery tourney. Obviously, I have no problem doing that, but I just wanted to make sure of that before I started planning and hyping.
- I figured I’d chime in about KOF as well. At the last three Iowa tourneys, it’s gotten the second largest turnout twice at Battlezone (2nd to MVC3 by like one or two people each time) and a close 3rd at FFX with 11 (MVC3 2nd with 14, Mystery 1st with 18). Now, I love the game more than any other current fighter out there right now, but that’s beside the point (if it wasn’t, I’d be begging you for 3rd Strike and Tech Romancer main tournaments). The point is that everyone was given the “show up or shut up” stipulation. And they did the former each time. A lot of communities just complain and never show up, and you and I both know the Tekken and Calibur communities are notorious for that. Iowa’s KOF community did the exact opposite. I personally think that’s worth a LOT in having it as an official MOK tourney. It’s also got over 900 players at Evo, which is more than SC5 and MK9 combined.
- You mention MK a few times in the rules. No biggie, but I figured I’d mention it if you wanted to go back in and clean the opening post up. Some other little errors in there, such as forum code/tags and such, but the MK thing stood out for me. (Well, that, and referring to MVC3 instead of UMVC3.)
- Personally, I suggest keeping the tournament one system only. It might be my hatred of getting used to my PS3 stick all day and then having to play on my 360 one talking, but I think it’s better all-around for planning purposes and headache prevention, both for TOs and for players. This is even with me ordering from eightarc within the month.
- A poll of whether or not to make UMVC3 best-of-5 might not be a bad idea, since a lot of majors are going with that.
I think that’s it for now.
Fair enough. KOF i feel should be in for sure for reasons alreayd stated. It’s a game that’s done well in Iowa and I hope it continues to do so. I would definitely say to keep an eye on P4. Part of it is I personally am very excited for the game, but its getting a lot of buzz and attention amongst multiple player bases, so there’s a good chance it could become a staple game at majors. It will also be the newest thing out (along with TTT2) and it’s always good to showcase new games with big potential at Regional tourneys. With that and TTT2 we stand a chance to draw both the new blood for 3D and 2D alike.
I’ll understand if P4 doesn’t make it, Blazblue really has the view on the air-dash games at an all time low right now (which is really unfortunate, CS:Ex is a great game as I found out at UFGT8). But it boasts ton of potential and i think it’d be silly to not at least keep and eye on it and consider adding it to the list.
The only other thing I would add is that VF5:FS is an awesome game, but I will not be shocked if by october the scene is all but vanished. It would definitely be worth keeping an eye on how that game is doing come fall. I hope it succeeds, even though I doubt i will put major time sinks into it, but VF doesn’t exactly have a history of staying power here in the US.
That’s all I can think of for now. Hopefully this thing blows up and we get a huge turnout.
@Mike: Thanks for the heads-up on MK. I used last year’s description and went through and updated everything for this year. I figured I missed at least one thing, so thanks for pointing that out. As for the Mystery tournament, I thought you had said you wanted to run one so I put it up there. If you did not want to run it, no worries, I can always take it off. That’s your thing so I’ll leave that completely up to you.
@Klaige: VF may ultimately not make the cut, and if that’s the case, I’ll remove it and refund anyone who happened to pre-reg for it. The reason I have it is because it’s gotten nothing but good reviews and since this is an event that was founded on 3Ds, I felt obligated to include it and give it a shot. For KoF…
@everyone: Since it seems that everyone is very gung ho about KoF (which is a good thing), I’ll add it here in a bit, updating the pre-reg button and all that jazz. I actually just saw the Evo pools update, and it definitely supports the argument for. This will apply to any and every game. I have to keep the list someone restricted because we do only have one day, but if a game has as much backing as KoF, it’ll definitely merit consideration. I also have no problem doing 3/5 for Marvel, if that’s what everyone wants. I’ll update that as well.
I have to call you out on this for one reason: While I don’t have any real problem with you, this kind of condescension seriously has to stop. I like to think that I know you and our scene enough to know that the implication in your statement is that the event needs KoF in order for you to be in attendance; however, you weren’t at the event last year, so… is there some sort of narcissism behind this that makes you think the event won’t happen or will suck without you? If you give me some real, explicit feedback then I can actually work to address it and make you happy. Show me some respect and I’ll show the same to you. PS: I usually keep this kind of thing contained to PMs, but I want to make sure everyone understands that I’m not going to tolerate it, no matter how well I know you.
Going to update threads, etc. now…
All right, so everything should be updated with KoF, including the PayPal button/dropdown menu. If anything is off, let me know.
Also, for you KoF junkies, I’d like to make sure that all special considerations are including in the announcement post, so are there any special rules I should be putting in there that everyone needs to know?
re: KOF rules - Not really. Just 2/3 matches, winner keeps characters but may switch order. The 3/5 rounds is implied since the 3v3 team mode is the standard.
re: Mystery - Oh, no no no, I don’t have any problem running it. And I do remember asking. I just wanted to be sure before I posted specific rules and guidelines and such. I didn’t wanna go in there and be all like “ALRIGHT BITCHES YOU GON’ GET SHIT ON WOOOOOOWHEEEEE” and you chime in with “lol Ted is running Mystery this year” and I’d be all “I HAVE SAD” and then I’d cry.
Actually I was just letting people know I wasn’t going to drive two hours each way to go to an event that I had no particular reason to go to, since some people do ask me if I’m going to things, but I can go with the reading too much into a statement explanation, too.
@Mike: All right, then, I’ll keep it up then.
@Murph: Right… I’d like it noted how Klaige and Link responded to KoF not being on the list and then refer you back to how you responded. If you want to claim naivete, go for it, but you and I both know you aren’t that stupid.
I’m honestly not sure what your problem is here. If you are mad at me for not going to MoK last year, thats fine but I had personal issues come up that prevented it. Yea I thought it was obvious that KoF would make a difference in me coming, but its not like I said you run a shitty tournament or something. So yea, I wouldn’t go to MoK if it didn’t have KoF in the same way you probably wouldn’t drive 2 hours to go to a bowling tournament you had no intentions of joining.
