Well these games don’t get the time and budget that arcade fighters get. So it’s to be expected.
They’re just meant to be enjoyed by the fans. and alot of the games have more under the surface than you’d think.(Not anything to have tournaments for, but enough to keep them from being mindless mashers)

Shounen mangas are aimed at boys age 8-18.
I like how the U.S. takes Shounen more seriously than anywhere else.
Shounen/Shoujo manga are aimed at 8-14/15-ish year olds btw. From then on it goes into Seinen/Josei/Salaryman/Otaku territory, minus the few out there ones like Shounen Ace and the such.

Well the fact is, it’s not going to be “gritty adult material” if part of the demographic is kids. I’m not saying that’s the only people who can like it or something. I just wanted to quote the big lebowski.
I understand you there. But I’m pretty sure this game is going to be rated T for Teen(or whatever the equivalent in Japan) so that may not matter. Then again, if it isn’t “M” or “AO” nobody pays attention anyway.
