I usually twist 2 separate wires together and stick both of them in the same hole. Works well with thinner 26 gauge stranded wire. Doesn’t matter where they are all connected, so long as they are all connected.
2 wires from the VCC on the 360 pcb
2 wires from the VCC on the imp
or 2 wires VCC screw terminal on the Cthulhu. Does not matter.
V column is a separate node from VCC. You can run into problems trying to wire things through the diodes, especially when an rj-45 is involved, with or without a dedicated USB cable. As far as I’m concerned, forget about the V column when dual modding and wire everything up to VCC. Trying to inplement the V column properly would be a hojillion different combinations of with/without RJ-45, with/without dedicated USB cable, with/without other pcb like Dreamcast, with/without Xbox360 support over the RJ-45 connection, etc, etc.
I’m looking for a really simple mod to make my XBox360 compatible with my PS3. I don’t need PS1/2/etc. That means I can use the regular Cthulhu board (Toodles Cthulhu for PC/PS3), right? So if I use that, I use a USB A/B cord to play on the PS3, and the original cord will continue to work with the XBox, right?
And the whole Imp board is just to have 1 cord to work with both machines, correct? So if I just use the Cthulhu and the original cord (ugly, but simple), I can skip the Imp.
And since I’m using the assembled version (seems to be the only one they sell anymore), there’s no soldering involved, right? Or do I still need to solder the other side (the sides not screwed in to the Cthulhu) to the buttons/stick? Can I use the wires already in there, or do I still need to get my own wire?
Also, this is my first game pad, so I was planning on using stock SF4 SE parts, and upgrade the stick if I liked it later. Would I have to start from square 1 to attach the new stick to the Cthulhu, or does it make no difference? If it’s a pain, I guess I might as well upgrade to an 8 point stick now so I don’t have to do it twice.
Firstly, there’s nothing “really simple” to make a dualmod. Everything requires more steps than you’re thinking. For this setup described in the OP, you absolutely require soldering, even if you need just ps3 support. If you just need x360 and ps3 support, then I suggest the Chimp or the ChimpSMD (Toodles Chimp Board / Toodles ChimpSMD). Both are the Cthulhu + IMP combined.
Basic gist of how this works it that the Chimp will “piggyback” onto the x360 components, and more specifically the x360 controller board itself. If you follow the OP, you’ll see that you absolutely need to solder a number of wires to the x360 board. From there, you can simply screw that wire from the x360 pcb into the corresponding Chimp screw-down slots (Light Kick to Light Kick, etc.). There’s a bit more to that, and I suggest you research and take a really good look at the first post to see what you’re getting yourself into.
I am a little confused here with the Dual Mods. I understand what the IMP board does, but what exactly does the cthulhu board do? Can I still dual mod a PS3 TE stick by padhacking a madcatz controller with ONLY the imp board?
From Waille’s post, it seems like he did it without a Cthulhu board. Rather he had the 360 controller piggyback off of the PS3’s feed of Ground/VCC connections? I was thinking of having two connections on the imp’s ground and VCC going into each PCB without the Cthulhu as I am only concerned about getting a PS3/XBOX360 mod.
It’s the Cthulhu board that carries the data for PS3.
In waille’s post, he’s trying to dual mod a PS3 SE stick, so no Cthulhu board is needed but a 360 board is, hence the 360 Fightpad. If you’re starting off with a 360 TE or SE stick (which is highly recommended) then you will need either a PS3 Cthulhu board or a Dual Strike board.
Yes I am dual modding a ps3 te stick and already have a 360 controller padhacked. Sounds like I’m on the right track. I guess I shouldve gotten a xbox te instead but it was fun modding
I skipped on figuring out how to get that home button working (would’ve had to sodder onto the tiny controller board that was located directly below the little rectangle slot with the home and turbo buttons on it). Gonna fill the hole somehow and get some custom artwork that covers it
Just to make sure I may or may not have to drill holes, this is my scenario:
I have the 360 TE stick, with a cthulu of the same model as the poster above. all wires screwed in. I have not combined it with my TE just yet. I intend to solder the cthulu wires to the existing 360 switchest(via that central hub that all the disconnects go through). once I do that, and connect the voltz & ground, is this the same effect as piggybacking the 360 pcb onto the cthulu(thus allowing me to only have the cthulu wire coming out’ve my stick)
also, where would i find the appropriate wire to go from usb->ps2/ps1?
Would someone mind helping me out? Having a few problems.
Trying to dual mod a 360 TE with a MC Cthulhu + Imp. After I wired it all up, I had connected it to my computer to test it. I couldn’t get the 360 component to activate, but the Cthulhu itself registered fine. I went to check my button/direction inputs and found that some of those were wired incorrectly, and so I went to rewire those. When I went to go back and test it on computer again, it no longer registers. I checked all of the grounds and 5V connections again to ensure that I didn’t accidentally disconnect anything in my rewiring process, and went so far as to rewire my grounds and 5V connections again and still nothing registers. I tried both the USB cable that I soldered to the Imp and a USB cable directly connected to the Cthulhu’s port.
I was planning on dual modding a 360 TE, and I was reading through your guide. I was wondering if it would be fine to use 24 awg wire instead of 30 awg you listed.
At the end of this guide, you have your USB still connected to the Imp. Do i need to keep that USB connected? Or would a USB/rj45 cable work for 360 play?
Reason for question, when usb is connected to IMP, Cth & 360 are both working when i test it. If i run a USB/cat5, cthulhu mode is kosher, but RS-selecting 360 mode results in an unworking/unrecognized usb connection. Figuring it’s power-to-pcb related, but i wanted to make sure i didn’t misunderstand this tut before i pull this beast apart again
(yea, asked in the cthulhu thread too. if not cool, lemme know… just covering relevant bases)
Just got me a MC Cthulhu to put on my MCZ PS3 TE to get rid of the PC connecting issue. (And to be more specific on a iMAC that run Windows).
I’m a bit disappointed by the lack of informations on this simple mod, while I can find pages of infos on dual mods and such, after hours of reading around, I just can’t find a tutorial or something about installing just a mc Cthulhu in a TE stick (without anything more). And those other vids or tuts just don’t talk about the basics, they go directly to their points.
The pdf is quite clear for installing buttons but nothing talk about :
Is this board replace the original completely ?
Can I still have a fully working stick aka can the buttons in the left up area (turbo and all) still work ?
where should I place the Cthulhu in the stick ?
Do I need to make a hole for the usb ? What’s the steps to use the original usb cable ?
How I deal with the JLF cable to connect it to the Cthulhu ? Do I need to buy another set of cable or I can use the original ones ? how ?
As for now I have a personal “idea” of the solutions, I would be glad to found some kind of a confirmation.
Yes, the new pcb will replace the old one completely
This pcb doesn’t have Turbo, so that won’t work. You can use the home button if you’re soldering, but then you’ll also have to get power to the old pcb.
Hmmm…I haven’t modded a ps3 SE stick, but if it’s like the TE sticks, there will be an empty space where the pcb goes in the xbox version of the stick. That spot would be perfect. Or you could place it just above the jlf.
No, you don’t need to make a hole. Just cut the USB from the old pcb and connect it to the new one.
I would cut the harness off the old pcb, strip the wires and connect them to the MC Cthulhu.
agreed with what Dannkk said as far as the MC but to be honest you should sell it and buy a imp v2 and a 360 fightpad… use the fightpad for PC and hook up the turbo with your exsisting turbo button on your TE… that way you get the full function you are asking about… but the MC works just like dannkk said.
Priceless infos guyz, TBH the turbo stuff isn’t mandatory at all as I’m mainly playing SSFIV. (and I have a TE round 2 not SE)
I guess I’ll have to wait a bit and buy some spare wires cause the length of the original JLF looks a bit short to place the pcb near the usb and still be able to open the case without fear.
Thank you guys o//
EDIT : Just saw that this thread is about 360 SE stick I wanted to post all this in a MC Cthulhu main thread but couldn’t find one…
