Yeah this looks like the easiest way of doing it, it saves me building the cthulhu, but i’m guessing if i can solder properly, then building the cthulhu won’t be too hard to build right? (i didn’t realise non-built one is pretty much half the price of the built one)
The Cthulhu and Imp are really easy to build. It just takes a little while to solder on the chips and stuff.
Can I still use an assembled cthulhu and solder the usb stuff on to the IMP?
Yeah, the only major difference with an assembled one is that you have to screw the wires into terminals instead of soldering them, which I found more time consuming (and not compatible with really thin wires).
I’m tempted to attempt the mod, I think i should be able to handle it, however, if I get too happy with solder, is there a possibilty to short out the pcb and effectively kill it? Or would things just not work and its a matter of taking excess solder out of a joint?
You won’t hurt the PCBs but either the whole thing wouldn’t work or certain functions wouldn’t work if you connect points that shouldn’t be connected. You should only use as much solder as it takes to make a joint, not a huge blob.

I could never get that de-soldering braid to work properly, so my soldering has to be perfect *
I can’t use desoldering braid effectively either. I have a Hakko desoldering gun, but those are expensive.
*
I’m guessing if i can get it to work for either the ps3/360, then it’ll work for the PC right? because they are both pc compatible by default.*
That’s right, and you’ll notice that I say to check both PCBs on a Windows PC in the guide.
It seemed like you have a short circuit. You should not get 1 volt with those points and when you said the boards got hot, that’s an indication of a short for sure. Can you disconnect the VCC point from the TE to the MC, then measure the voltage on the MC points where you showed 1 volt. This will isolate the boards from each other. One of the 2 boards (MC or TE PCB) is shorted for sure, the IMP looked OK.
Does this mean the Cthulhu is shorted?
How do I know its not the TE board that’s shorted?
Also, while I was testing it this time, a brief message popped up on my computer saying the USB device wasn’t recognized. before, it wasn’t saying anything.
Bomberman, Upas is the second person to have troubles from using a PS3 Cthulhu instead of an MC Cthulhu. Can you put in a note somewhere to jumper the #1 diode spot if there is no diode? I’d appreciate it.
Yeah, there’s something wrong with your Cthulhu board. Looks the the problem is on the Cthulhu board. Your TE PCB is fine. Toodle said to run a straight wire here shown in red. Just solder a plain wire between those 2 pads. Give it a shot… If doesn’t work then ask Toodles for further help…
I have my TE sticks modded with MC’s and IMP’s and PS3/360 Works beautifully! (Thanks Toodles). I recently installed a RJ45 jack to make cables for all systems (Thanks RoboKirKit!). However, I have made my PS1/2 cables and they don’t seem to respond correctly when I connect it to the PS3 through a PS3 to USB adapter or my PC/Mac.
It this the adapter causing the issues? (Still waiting for my Total Control Adapters) The guide button faintly lights up while I am holding it down upon plugging it in.
I have the IMP’s top V/G/D-/D+points going to the proper pins or the RJ45. Then, the other four points on the MC connecter to the other 2,3,4,7 going to the proper pins of the RJ45.
Gamingnow.net doesn’t accept international customers, i was ready to buy the cthulhu and imp (as they’re the only ones that seem to have stock), but no go… wasn’t allowed to checkout due to “non-us customer”
So I only have a 360 and would like to do this mod so I can use my stick in tournaments and stuff. So I’ve been wondering, how do you test to make sure it’s working properly on the PS3 short of tracking down and buying one? I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one in this boat.
Ah that seems so obvious to me now. So just to clarify, I would have to hold the home button while plugging it in to the tv to test the ps3 half correct?
You hold the Home/Guide button when plugging the stick in to make it switch to whatever console is connected to the # 2 points on the Imp board. If PS3 is your secondary system, then yes.
This is my first post, and I felt I had to respond because I just finished the making my TE Xbox360 dual mode with the Cthulhu PS3/PC and IMP. The soldering was a little tough to do because I was using 22 AWG wire. One thing I did different from the diagram was connect the 5v power from IMP to the USB port VCC because I didn’t have the MC version. I also spent like 2 hours finding out why it wouldn’t switch to Xbox 360 when I plugged it in. I spent like 2 hours trying to figure out what I did wrong. Turns out my friend noticed my guide and turbo buttons were locked… Yeah, I felt pretty stupid after that, but relieved because it all worked! Thanks to Bomberman, Faux123, Toodles, and Gamingnow.net for everything. This thread was really helpful.
Finally got my Imp and got some time. I’m pretty happy with myself, as I actually got all my connections right the first time through. I think spending an hour making that visio drawing and connection matrix really helped.
Here’s mine:
Big thanks to all who have contributed to this thread and again to Toodles for making such awesome products!
