Installing an MC Cthulhu and Imp in an Xbox 360 SF4 SE stick

On my SE 360 PCB, neither the VCC nor GND are labeled. I do have the CN6 indicator near the end of the row of solder points, but the solder connections are not labeled like they are on the first page post. Is it OK to assume that the last solder connection is really VCC and the one before it is GND?

You probably have a ‘version B’ PCB like me. Those points are labeled, but they’re actually labeled from the top of the PCB for some reason. Just flip it over and you’ll see what I mean. So yeah, you can use those.

Let me axe you something.
The Imp, it takes the USB wires from the two boards, and it picks one of them to talk on the USB cable going out of the box, yes?

Now, if all of the wires on your RJ-45 are connected to the MC Cthulhu only, and not connected in any way to the Imp or the 360 pcb, how is the Imp going to be able to do anything useful?

magic duh

the imp board even being in the case should make it do math

I want to say thanks, and at the same time I don’t. I CAN DO MY OWN MATH THANKS!!!111!1 <See math

No really, thanks for the tip Toodles. Make no mistake, I’m not skilled at this kinda stuff but I figure I’d need to get my feet wet sometime. I think I got it now, I’ll go and get to work, lol.

I have a question regarding this section of the guide.

Wiring from the SE PCB to the Cthulhu

Now connect a wire from one of the Cthulhu’s ground points to any of the SE’s ground points. Do the same from the 5V point on the Cthulhu to the VCC point on the SE PCB.

The 5V point on the Cthulhu is the point right above the Up point, right? Just trying to verify that. As for the VCC point on the SE PCB I can’t seem to find it. It looks like on your pic its located on the very top towards the center, but my labels are a bit different.

Can you take a high quality photo of your PCB, Legendary? You can use the USB 5V point on the SE PCB if we really can’t find the VCC point.

Yes, 5V on the Cthulhu is next to Up.

So, yeah, I tinkered around with the Imp/MC C wiring for a while and realized I am poor at figuring things out for myself when it comes to electrical stuff. My first thought was to connect the D+, D- and Signal and ground points from the MC Cthulhu to the Imp, but after mulling over it, I decided I’d just stop embarassing myself on a public forum as well as stop cluttering up Bomberman’s thread, and I just made it a two-cord stick using the original USB cable… and guess what, it works, lol.

Now all is well and it works like a champ. Moral of the story: when in doubt, just follow the directions.

Thanks Bomberman for the great guide, thanks Toodles for the MC Cthulhu, Imp, and your great shipping rates, and NO thanks to me for trying to screw around with something I didn’t quite understand!

looking back on this thread i ran into this

I may have not run into the solution or might have skipped it, but was this ever answered?

Im in the same situation

You need to verify that start and select work (arent showing as held down) on a pc and verify that when the stick is moved, it shows as both the X/Y and POV hat moving.

thy do work and the only the POV moves the X/Y dont move

I got another question x_x. I’m doing another TE mod. I thought I had finished… but…

I’m testing the stick on the PC now. The Xbox mode works 100% fine. On the other hand, the Imp can send the stick into PS3 mod, and it shows up as “Cthulhu PC/PS3” in the control panel, but none of the buttons work. If i mash away. the green rings around the xbox button light up and one of the turbo LEDs start to show.

I’ve tested all the contacts on the Cthulhu board, and they work fine. All of them have continuity with ground. What should I do/test next?

EDIT: I tested it on another computer and it worked fine. I will test it on my PS3 and make a final verdict.
EDIT again: It seems my computer’s USB ports are borked. The Mod is great! Disregard this :stuck_out_tongue:

Is there anything special that I would need to know for using a gamestop/madcatz common ground pad with a cthulu and imp?

The board you have it dual’ed with is keeping the voltage on Start low when it first gets plugged in. STHD ignores the d-pad from the Cthulhu for some reason, and only wants the info from the X/Y axis. Because it looks like Start is pressed when first plugged in, the Cthulhu goes into d-pad only mode instead of the normal ‘both X/y and POV hat’.

I can’t claim responsibility on this one; the Cthulhu is completely acting like it should. If you’d like to see for yourself, disconnect the wire connecting the Cthulhu Start from the 360 Start; it’ll work just peachy. Since you’re posting it in this thread instead of the Cthulhu thread, I’m going to assume it’s in a madcatz fightstick; I saw the same behavior from the Guide button on the first dual mod I did on one.

Now, to get around it, that’s gonna be tricky. Is the Cthulhu in your stick an MC? If so, then I can put a small delay before the lines are checked that should solve it just fine, and you can update the firmware with the new code easy enough. If you have a regular Cthulhu, things get tricky. On one hand, I don’t want to leave you up a creek, and on the other, the failure isn’t on my part. What I’d suggest is for you to pick up an MC upgrade from me; it’s a new MC chip and the diodes to use on the Cthulhu. Since you may not care about the other consoles supported, you can wait or forget about the diodes and just pop the old chip out and put in the new chip, problem solved.

I got a problem. I assembled the MC cthulhu and did the mod per what bomberman directed in this mod. I did not do the RJ-45 mod since I don’t have the time to do it since I need to deliver this mod completed to the customer tomorrow. When I plugged the usb cord into the computer nothing came up. I held down the Guide button but nothing lit up. So I went and touched the imp board and the imp board chips are really hot. So I ended up desoldering the VCC from the imp to try and diagnose the problem.

I went and read this thread front to back and found out that upas had the same issue. So I went and did a continuity test from the vcc where the usb jack is to the V where bomberman said to solder and it’s not a common vcc. So I went ahead and tried another continuity test from the vcc on where the usb jack would be soldered to and the vcc where the screw terminal is located and nothing. I do not know what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

thanks to Toodles/bomberman/faux.

just finished the 360 TE + PS3 cthulhu + imp mod.

it was very straight forward, and I did the start/select lock mod also.

Toodles, do you happen to know where the solder point is for trying LS/RS button to control imp’s selection of the data lines? I may want to go this route since it’s kind of hard to plug USB in while holding the guide button

Look in the lower right; there are two points, one called ‘L STICK’ and the other called ‘R STICK’. Take your pick.

great, thanks! Will try later tonight and let you know how it went.:lovin:

Please let me know how it goes; Based on what I’ve seen, it SHOULD work, but it is still untested.

Had a question has anybody tested out when dual modding a Xbox 360 Stick if the Headphone Jack works with the PS3 or not…?
