Injustice: Gods Among Us; New Game by NetherRealm Studios

I haven’t really played soul calibur since 2, but you’re saying those stages start one character near a ledge and not the other? And people use those stages in tournaments without complaints?

Yup. I’ve seen smallest stages chosen during Evo and no one went running to stage select

Controlling frame rate in Unreal is not difficult, so I don’t imagine NRS will have an issue with it. Concerning the 3 person teams, it does kinda matter how many models and textures you load, but framerate dips (in my experience) are almost always due to displaying multiple complex materials and overlapping alpha.

The areas and view distances we’ve seen so far are small by Unreal standards. Other games rocking UE3 can push a load of moving objects into a player’s view without dropping a frame.

In many ways, its natural to have a stigma against stage interactivity from a competitive standpoint, when you consider games like Smash (even a few stages in MK9) that literally hinder the flow of battle with random bullshit. But again, Injustice is built around this stuff. I can guarantee a year from now we will be watching a hype Desk or Check or Endless combo vid that uses every hazard in a given area. There is literally no reason to believe anything akin to say Brinstar or Rainbow Road is in the cards.

I’ll grant you most of the “pick this up and throw it” stuff is probably useless, unless you can hold onto it after a hit (ie: not Cody), but here’s a couple examples that i think /will/ matter.

Metropolis:
-Yellow Car
Nightwing has a corner escape that he can use to punish zoners. And those are the cornered options. From the other side of the screen, batman’s baterangs and harley’s gunshots get a (maybe unblockable, knowing NRS) explosion / knockdown, if wake up is as poor in this game as it is in MK, this could be huge for zoners.

-Hover Car
Both Flash and Nightwing actually get a dive kick from it. A flippin dive kick. This is huge. Imagine Flash’s options during his slow down mode with a friggin dive kick. Imagine if nightwing can do air wing ding then dive kick to start ground combo from air projectile confirm, or dive kick cancel to wing dings to be safe?
And once its broken, you get the exposed wires, which basically turns any high knockdown or anti air into an extended combo. Imagine juggling after the bounce from Grundy’s command throw.

Batcave:
-DK Barrels
Flash’s barrel roll looks like it juggles from 3/4 - full screen. Hopefully they won’t do something dumb like make it unblockable or give it huge block stun cause if so, anybody with full screen hit confirms is going to be sick.

-Hanging Generator / wires
Again, dive kicks for flash and nw, at least. Imagine if someone like Green Arrow can “hang” from the generator and shoot arrows or something. That would be absolutely gross / awesome. And again, hanging wires when its gone is going to be a huge combo opportunity, count on it.

There’s also that portal in the E3 reel with the OTG slide kick, and it looks like Kal-el’s ship in Solitude is a free juggle for power characters (WW, in particular). This one I’m actually hoping is unblockable, or at least armored so its at least worth the risk of getting cornered.

Shit could potentially get bananas, real quick.

Assists, parries, chain combos, FADC, wall juggles, even meter based super moves all evolved out of broken systems that were fucking retarded in some other game. Its easy with hindsight to say these are conventional, because now they’ve been acceptable so long but once upon a time 2in1 cancels were just a programming glitch. Imagine if they’d given up back then and fighters never got more complicated then art of fighting or Yie Ar Kung Fu. Now we press two buttons to cancel anything into anything for 30 seconds and the whole world stands up and applauds.

Actually it can allow for counter picking stages. If your character has a bad matchup in general vs another character, then you can try picking stages that can help even the odds or even swing them in your favor. They do it all the time in Smash. For example, in melee Falcon vs Falco on most stages is in Falco’s favor. However, on Donkey Kong 64 stage (and a hand full of others) the matchup switches to Falcon’s favor due to positioning of platforms, and stage dynamics.

You’re reasoning as if NRS just started making fighting games and don’t know how they work.

Yellow Car:
Like I said NRS aren’t new to fighting games and I **doubt **with every fiber of my being that that will be a problem, and NRS seem to make sure they patch game breaking things or at least they did in MK9 so I expect no different.

Hover Car: you can block a damn dive kick, it looks to be more of a combo extender than anything else, it isn’t terribly fast activate and you can only do it on a certain part of the stage with very limited range and doesn’t have amazing recovery, its not like you cant dash away from there if someone tries to dive kick you. That argument is pretty dumb dude.

DK Barrels: those things look so ridiculously easy to dodge they aren’t even worth mentioning, and the recovery doesn’t look fast enough to follow up on the barrels.

Wires: They are there as combo extenders, and even someone who just started making fighting games knows enough to not let people be able to be hit into the wires more than once or twice.

Don’t love the character design, I hope it’s not stiff feeling like MK games are and… that’s all really. I’ll get it for Batman.

I just thought of something, Black Alice could be the Shang Tsung of Injustice!

I would cry tears of joy if Black Alice appeared in this game.

A dive kick on a fixed trajectory from a fixed point isn’t so dominating as all that

@pterodactyl,
It isn’t so much that any of this will be truly game breaking. I know these guys are going to give it 200% because they always do. But they also always ship with flat out dumb decisions and miss basic problems. Even MK9, which is easily their most competitive triumph, shipped with a tier list carved out of goddamned adamantium, and while the game steadily improved/s they keep introducing fresh brain dead BS with every patch and DLC character release. Even now, after god knows how many patches and tournaments some characters simply have not moved from the bottom (or top).

Which is not to say MK9 is unplayable or unenjoyable at any level, I love the game to death, but NRS are still very new at this and it shows.

I think Mk9 has evolved quite nicely as a competitive from its 1st year till now. It isn’t perfect but what fighting game really is, my only concern for this game is the stage stuff and I wish running was featured instead of dashing.

refresh my memory of all the fixed problems MK9 had, and why they were so bad.

I know Kung Lao, Ermac, and Raiden were god damn ridiculous at first(but were quickly nerf’d, effectively without making the characters shitty or different) for one thing, but the other I cant really remember.

problems were pretty much entirely minor balance tweaks, I Think there was an infinite or 2.

Still, an aggressive early patch regime took care of that.

A stage with a lazarus pit interaction would be amazing, it should regen some of your health for a little bit but make you unable to block during the health gain.

would be awesome.

This game looks like it could be amusing for awhile. Like others have mentioned, however, I too am concerned about the environmental interaction and its affect on matches, as well as the overall stiffness of the game.

I am highly intrigued though.

Bear in mind I’m not talking about scrubby characters (although 1.0 Kung Lao / Raiden were pretty scrubby), I’m talking about legitimately broken. Stuff they eventually said was violating system rules. The blockstring infinites, the legitimate infinites, the glitched xrays, Skarlet’s ridiculous knife pressure, Freddy (or maybe it was Rain)'s lack of damage scaling, costumes came out with broken collision boxes, and the fact that somehow jax was patched from the bottom of the tier list to the top, but Jade never moved.

These are the kind of things NRS trips over regularly. They had the luxury of doing that hotfix thing and a healthy patch budget for this game, so they have always had the favor and support of their fans but that doesn’t change the fact they slipped up. A lot.

Nice, I had not seen any Wonder Woman or Cyborg footage yet.
