You can have a character look battle-ready without having to lock all of them in the same stock grim expression facing forward. The best character portraits actually say something about the character.
And even if you were going to argue that these still images don’t represent the fighters coming to life in gameplay, their drab costumes combined with a general lack of voicework besides grunting (which you even acknowledge is an issue) make everyone seem less like themselves and more like some puppets wearing their clothes.
Okay. This means absolutely nothing.
Also a non-argument, and you shouldn’t assume that everyone who dislikes certain design decisions is a Capcom fan.
I thought it was pretty clear from a few pages ago that I didn’t. Which is too bad, because DC is pretty awesome.
It’s cute for the first 100 or so matches, but the 1000th time I have to hear someone shout something stupid I just want to kill myself.
They have just the right amount of VO in this, sometimes they will say something during an EX move or a throw, but never with normal moves.
Though I am kinda worried about Grundy, I hope he doesn’t recite that stupid poem every time he starts a chain throw, that would just be the worst. Should have saved it for his intro or something.
Well, in terms of pure sound presence (as in, somebody is saying something), Injustice actually has about the same amount as other games. It’s just the variety of phrases is restricted almost entirely to grunts. So instead of, say, 20 phrases being cycled around during a match, you have 5. If anything, it’s more grating due to things being repeated more frequently.
Grundy’s chain grab voice over is sort of weird, because it’s the sort of thing he should have been doing from the beginning, but because of the complete lack of anybody else using a sentence over 90% of the time, it comes off as jarring.
Having played mostly 3D fighters growing up, the grunting has never bothered me. It sounds natural, as something that should happen in a fighting game.
Wait nevermind I completely misread what you were saying.
I don’t mind it its being repeated more, as long as it only happens 2 or 3 times a match.
Only if the move is repeated more frequently (spammed), and I don’t think it’s something to worry about in this game. Like it was said earlier, Batman only yells “GET DOWN HERE” after a successful grapple in a combo. So I doubt that it’ll even be a factor. Besides, I don’t recall any case in which gamers have been turned off Mortal Kombat because of annoyingly repeated dialogue.
I’m not talking about repeated quotes. There should be more quotes. It’s the frequency of the grunts that’s annoying.
Mortal Kombat players readily accepted palette-swapped ninjas and robots as separate characters for years. I doubt they’d be fazed by repeated anything.
The voices are sometimes charming, sometimes obnoxious. Guile (usually) has some of the worst voices in the entire Street Fighter series. They’re especially lousy in Super Street Fighter II, where he’s much too high-pitched, and shouts “Rupaul!” when he’s defeated. A close runner-up is Street Fighter EX, where he has an obvious Japanese accent. It’s hard to take him seriously when he barks “Sa-nincomPOOP!” with each fireball toss.
So far, I’m reasonably satisfied with the voices in Injustice… I mean, hell, they’ve got Khary Peyton, so I know they’re doing something right. However, I would like to hear more in-fight banter, like what you’d hear in an online fight in Street Fighter IV. Just shouting out the names of special moves isn’t going to cut it.
I think there are definitely annoying attack calls or dialogue (PSYCHO BALLLLL, TIGER TIGER TIGER, in other fighting games, but the characters at least felt like people. It’s always felt like mk’s grunts were all so interchangable between characters so none of them seemed like living things. just pieces of meat that made a nondescript noise when you hit a button.
Injustice KINDA sounds a little more varied than MK9, but I dunno if we’ve seen enough gameplay.
I can understand that about MK, especially the earlier games since they basically recycled sounds for other male characters and all female characters outside of Sheeva shared grunts. MK9 went completely away from that, but I guess some people have heard the shared grunts for so long they can’t un-hear it.
OK, in those terms I can definitely see it. I mean outside of Harley & Joker, everyone without super-strength is basically geared up for the Super Bowl…which is understandable since Kal-El can knock you into lower orbit and back again, lol.
