I think “this game attracts the worst people” argument is probably the best reply i’ve seen. I came into vanilla not liking fighting games in general. I played Mortal Kombat 9, and even though i was a huge fan of the series all the way through mortal kombat Armageddon, I still didn’t like it, primarily because i started playing marvel. Combo building is fun to me, and i constantly come up with interesting ideas because the game has so much potential to that degree. I also play online with my friends, and although a lot of the things that happen in UMVC pisses me off, I still enjoy the game. The inflated egos rule doesn’t apply to me, as i am not a complete noob, but their are SO many people better than i am. I think that the OP has simply been playing a lot of ranked, and that’s the problem. Most people who play ranked expect that they are good, and winning simply inflates the ego. It doesn’t matter how or why you won, you get a sense of accomplishment when you win, and start to think you have everything figured out. The general assholes that seem to gravitate toward this game have to point out they are an asshole. So…
A: They lost on stupid shit, and it’s the game not their skill, or you got a lucky hit in. They must point this out, or you might actually think your good.
B: They won, obviously because they are better than you. They must point this out, or you might think it was because of stupid shit, or that it’s the game and not skill related.
Simply put, this is what you should expect playing ranked matches. I don’t play ranked because i play for fun. I rarely play the game unless one of my friends are online, so i have only hopped on player matches about 2 or 3 times since the game has come out. If you happen to have a local scene or play in tournaments, and you go online to “test your might”, expect to run into douchebags, and just ignore their messages. Their is a very good chance that they think they are hot shit because they simply do not know what it means to be at “tournament level.”
Let me clarify one thing. This game attracts online assholes. It also attracts people who like your general fighting game genre. Play online if you want to test your skill or a team idea, but do not play it for fun. Only play with your friends if you play for fun. If you have plenty of access to local play, don’t play online. Offline is, for obvious reasons, a better way to test your skill level or test your team, figure out areas you need to improve, etc.
