ya pretty stupid that a measure of a tournaments success is the attractiveness of the participants.
I think womens basketball had just as much negative reaction as this did when it first started
I didn’t think much of the women’s invitational before getting to Evo, but I checked it out because there was a big crowd getting hype around the station. Watching a few of the matches it became clear that the average level of play was considerably lower than that in the main event pools.
That being said, there are many reasons aside from drawing high level play to run a tournament. For those of us who didn’t have anything to do with running Evo, we don’t have a say in what events they hold and to comment on whether something was worthwhile or not is misguided because the Evo team could have reasons besides drawing out top level competition–which they probably did–for throwing this women’s invitational.
Personally, though, I can understand the saltiness from male players. I had a horrendous outing in my pool and was eliminated in the first day. I was watching the women’s invitational and was jealous of them; not because of the prizes they would get, but simply because they had another chance to get some more tournament action. My Evo tournament life was gone with the wind, and these girls got another chance. But again, it’s not up to me what events they hold, so although I was salty I had lost, I never once said that the women’s invitational “wasn’t worthwhile.”
Not going to lie, though. I definitely contemplated the scenario that could have been if I had pulled a “Juwanna Mann” and faked my way into the tournament.
Well to be in the Women’s Tourney you had to be int he main tourney but to hear they changed announcers was a bad idea. They should of just stuck with whoever it was commentating.
Although Kayane wouldn’t of won if Choco Blanka was there!
I think you guys have the wrong idea here. Maybe I came off the wrong way because I mentioned a bad stereotype for girl girls who game. I never said girls who come out had to be attractive. All I said is I’m glad some of them were because any females who were unsure about coming out to a tournament, could look at the stream and relate to some of the girls and feel better about coming out to other tournaments. Some of you guys have such a big stick up your asses.
I could have done well with that explanation without that last sentence. Show some class.
While I agree with your first point, seeing as we have nothing to do with that decision, the second line I think just about every person on these forums, hell probably even some females from that tournament, will disagree with.
You have to consider this: You gave away a gold stick to the winner of a tournament between, what was it, less than 10 people? None of whom made it out of pool play in the actual tournament. The person who placed 9th in the main tournament deserved that stick FAR more than the winner of the women’s tournament did. Hell, the person who placed 32nd deserved it more than they did. It was just a patronization for the female players who actually showed up.
If it had just been like the new Chun stick or something, fine, but it was stupid to give away a 1 in 24 stick to somebody who didn’t even place in the top 200 at the tournament (although I believe Kayane was the one girl who did place in the top 100 so I do give her credit for that, but if she had lost the situation would have been much worse).
The only two women in the invitational who had a clue what they were doing were Burnyourbra and Kayane. Everyone else looked as though they had picked up the game the week before EVO and hadn’t even bothered to learn combos. That’s the reason people are complaining. These girls came in, almost all of them with little to no preparation, and were given a MUCH better chance to win a stick than the men who came in who have been playing since vanilla launched and probably playing SF since long before that, and who have been preparing for the tournament for a long time.
This is just my opinion, which I think many others share. People should be rewarded for their skill, not for being the best out of a tiny minority in a game where everybody, regardless of sex, has an equal fighting chance. This isn’t an FPS where reactions are the end all be all, this is a mental game, if they really wanted to win a prize, then they can train as hard as the male players who placed top 8. Kayane showed she has the mental ability to compete with the men in this game, if she trained with the best of the best as hard as they do chances are she could have made top 8 and one a gold stick in the actual tournament and garnered far more respect.
I’m so sick of this entire topic. The women’s tournament was announced way before the event, maybe the ladies in the tournament weren’t to your standards but you’re all complaining after the fact. The tournament organizers have no idea what potential they’re capable of, and to cancel the event or take away the prize simply because you don’t like how they play after it’s announced is a bit more unfair don’t you think?
For everyone complaining about how the gold stick was easier to get, you should all go hunt down whoever won the raffle, because he was probably someone passing by the room, saw the crowd and came to see what was going on.
I too found it a bit annoying as well… they reacted as if women can’t do bnb’s…
Actually, I made my stance pretty clear as soon as the tournament was announced. Hence the word “Inevitably” in the thread title. Do you really think the staff would have said “You’re right, this whole thing is a bit unsensetive, lets turn away these entry fees and more attractive image.”?
Im not trying to villianize anyone. I just thought that if enough people agreed, the staff might be inclined to listen next time around.
Is this what you’re talking about?
any background to this?
and I thought the women’s tournament was pretty good, anyway to broaden the fan base is good IMO. It’s obvious that there isn’t many girls that enter these tournaments, some may be intimidated by the amount of higher skilled players, I’m sure every casual players feel the same.Giving them some recognition will help bring more to the scene. I would like to see more girls play, and if we judged the tournament on the looks of the participants then no one would watch EVO
Just some good ol fashioned drama. I hope next year the norcal ladies can take this tourney!

There is plenty of background to those photographs but I can offer only one side of the story. This is what Sherry had to say:
LOL that’s mad salty though. When someone starts trash talking you gotta throw it back & play along. The handshake stuff is too personal. Makes for a funny thread later though, thanks for the entertainment.
You’re right. When I read what I had wrote, I realized why you thought that way, so I tried to explain what I was really trying to get across.
The other guy pissed me off, and I guess it was more meant for him. For one thing, I always take care of my looks. I’m no Ricky Ortiz but I’ll always be clean and presentable. For the other, he attacked me rather than what I said. I didn’t need that to start my day.
Oh and about the “fight”, I heard both sides of the story on the forums and each side has grounds. I guess it was a little bit of gamesmanship gone wrong but ultimately, I agree with whoever said that not shaking hands at the end was a bit too personal. Should leave it all out there and be courteous after. (Doesn’t mean I’m taking Stephanie’s side though because it’s easier to be courteous and a good sport after a win rather than a bitter lost)
Looked like the paralympics, sorry. But i understand they needed to bring some pussy so the nerds could feel a little less lonely, mad props to ev0!
This thread fails… so bad… OP if you hate so much about this women tourney goto sleep and do not watch, if you hate on so much, next year wear a wig and enter  simple as that
I was told pre-ops were allowed to enter so that’s always an option if someone feels the need to enter and show ladies how it’s done.
Pretty sure Kayane can beat anyone in this thread talking shit about the women’s play level in a tournament setting.
