Inevitably, the female tournament was a mess

Are there going to be side tournaments for homosexuals, blacks, Mexicans, asians and whites at Evo 2011? Will there be a Hindu-only invitational?

For what it’s worth…

I am a casual gamer and finally got into SF4 and SSF4 since it was always talked about amongst my close group of friends. As soon as I found out about the women’s tournament I started to get into it and practiced a little each day, asking my friends for tips and tricks, sparring with them, etc.

No, I didn’t do well in the main tournament (damn Honda), but I was more successful in the women’s bracket. I knew realistically in both brackets I wasn’t going to get out of the pool alive, but I had a blast anyway. I had a lot of support (minus one a-hole) from both genders and it was great to see (most of) the women’s pool getting along with each other.

While waiting for my turn in the main tournament, I felt a little uneasy and nervous being around a bunch of guys who I knew what they were thinking upon seeing me. The mentioned a-hole above was making rude comments as I was playing, but whatever. I didn’t see him get out of the pool so his heckling meant nothing to me. I ignored it and did my best, losing with a smile on my face. =) My opponent was real cool too.

Next year if I’m able to attend Evo I’ll be more confident as I competed this year with like three months of experience under my belt.

Just my two cents…

No really sure how it was a “mess” but, their skill wasn’t any worse than what you would see at a local tournament

I’m not really sure why these threads keep coming up, but it seems like the tournament offended more guys than girls.

Being female is different from being homosexual, a different race or a different religion. Of course opinions may vary but because they vary quite significantly is why they are all different situations.

Segregation is segregation. If the assumption is that women are naturally worse at playing video games than men and require special treatment, then where is the Down Syndrome Invitational or the Cerebral Palsy Invitational? Is Evo going to turn into the Special Olympics of fighting games?

I have problems with the women’s invitational but that’s not why it exists. You had to sign up for the main tournament to qualify for the women’s invitational at all.

Now, other people in these threads have been making that argument, but that’s another issue.

That’s already been established but it doesn’t invalidate the argument that women were given the option of a segregated side tournament because of the assumption that they can’t compete with men.

in regards to strategy competition, chess and billiards have separate women’s leagues and nobody says anything about it. In poker, women do well playing with men. It all just depends on the format and what works well.

Sure it does. They were given the option as an attempt to say “hey y’all we want you here too! look we’ll throw this little shindig on the side for you and everything to get everyone hype!” There wasn’t a tournament for the other groups you listed because those people are already pretty firmly integrated into the FGC, and they can compete because they’ve already been there and been competing. Women aren’t already there and they’re largely not placing highly because they’re not already largely in the scene competing. It’s all kind of circular, I know! But the point of this event was simply to get them there to begin with so the next steps in the process could start happening.

It was a flawed idea but I’m not sure you’re characterizing it correctly.

It seems like most posters are saying the ends justify the means, and hinting that the means are indeed pretty douchey. I can’t say I would disagree if I were in a position to profit.

I think it was a success. It wasn’t a mockery. These women can play and I’m sure Kayane could kick my ass. I was impressed to see girls who had a good sense of the game, and also that they were not all your stereotypical “female gamers” who are all tomboys, ugly and have nothing better to do than seek attention of guys in places where they have no competition. Some of these women were good looking and probably great people who just enjoy a good fighting game. THAT’S the point of the tournament, to encourage more females to play and come out and I think in that regard, this sent a perfect message.

Why shouldn’t the winner get a gold TE? You think Kayane doesn’t put in the hours and hard work? Further more, these women have to put up with so much just to be out here. From being looked down on before a fight starts, to people stereotyping them, and downright sexual harassment sometimes. So yes, I truly believe the winners of the Women’s Invitational deserve a gold TE just like all the other winners.

Edit: One more thing, the level can increase if these women really want to catch up to Kayane and top guys as well. I believe they are capable, and a year’s time can do wonders. Just look at how much stronger the competition was this year in the Men’s. There were many players who seemed to have caught up to around Justin’s level where as last year, besides Daigo, he was pretty much in a league of his own. So this is a good start, I can see it becoming even better.

Anyone who does not see the benefits for running a Womens invitational tournament is quite frankly an idiot.

I agree with this guy

I thought the dames did a good job. I was disappointed in the overall drop in enthusiasm and half assed commentary while they played but thats to be expected in a male dominated sport. I support any and all women who want to play. My main reason is I can see a dude play gdlk any day but its rare to see a woman do it. I like the diversity and I think its good for the community. It’s not like we are gonna see “Top Tier Tampon” threads so there is nothing to worry about.

Why do they have to be good looking? Can’t they just be there to play the game? Why must women be objectified if the whole point is to play a tournament. I shouldn’t have to look like a model just to be considered a great player. It should be based on skill, not on what I look like. Not a combination of the two.

I was there in pools, it was going pretty well, a few DQs and some drama and trash talk between Sherry and Stephanie aside, but I think that just added to the hype. This definitely was all good for the community IMO.

Too bad it’s not up to you to decide who gets a gold stick.

“got it really easy” lol, you’re a jackass.

uh, regardless of whether or not he meant easier because of gender. It was automatically easier since not as much people entered, and the best players were restricted from entering (not making comments about gender).

Also, I found it annoying when people got all excited and cheered when kayane actually did a bnb.

Considering the hideous guys who show up to play this game, nobody really has any right to judge how the girls look in SF at all. Some of you guys show up to these tournaments uncombed, unshaven and with the breath of someone who needs an intimate relationship with a toothbrush. Some guys really have no standards for themselves when they go out in public. I love how you attempted to support female gamers with a benevolent stance, and then set yourself back with bullshit like that.

Using their appearance and your judgment of their attractiveness as a quality of their existence as gamers~ I guess it’s unavoidable with some of you. Depressing really.
