Actually yes, some GGXX characters are based on things from SNK characters. By all accounts Ishiwatari was a developer on The Last Blade. And Baiken’s voice actress was chosen to sound like Himura Kenshin (someone said that they used the same voice actress, but I’m pretty sure thats wrong). And there’s really no arguing where Sol’s moveset comes from.
The rock/metal references on names of things in GGXX isn’t really news. You fail at making yourself sound smart.
Put down Ric Flair for Hugo, too. Am I the only one who noticed Hugo’s homage to the Nature Boy with his dizzy animation?
If anyone plays Jojo’s Biazarre adventure, Dio’s walk animation is the same as K9999 from King of Fighters. I believe the SNK artist traced the walk cycle. There were I few other SNk-thefts I noticed in some games…but I cant think of them right now.
what about dhalsim? i heard hes based off a similiar guy from some 70s kung fu movie.
Mortal Kombat
*Rayden: that guy with the hat from Big Trouble in Little China + the Shinto god of lightning Raiden/Raijin
*Johnny Cage: Jean Claude Van Damme[Martial arts movie star that does lots of splits. The public doubts that his martial arts skill is real(remember that Jean Claude once got KO’ed by his body guard for getting buck on him).]
Kabal: Predator
Rayden and Johnny Cage were proven in an interview and Kabal is just a guess.
I believe you’re thinking of the “Indian rubberman” from Master of the Flying Guillotine.

Regarding Gon: Namco bought the rights to portray him from Makoto Kobayashi, author of the manga Gon (duh). That’s why Gon never appeared in other Tekkens: too expensive.
Of course Art of Fighting bit off SF characters and styles. It was all a huge joke on Capcom, who then retaliated with Dan, their take on SNK characters (or more bluntly, a combination of Ryo’s gi and moves, Robert’s head, and Yuri’s personality). Things like the CVS2 reference to the obvious statue of Guile in Rugal’s stage in KOF '94 are just friendly jokes between the companies (watch the Rugal vs. Guile intro in CVS2 for this reference).
In GG, the characters themselves aren’t based off of the metal references; just their names. Some of the character designs and and move sets are rather familiar though (thank you SNK).
Also, Hugo is obviously a dead ringer for Andre the Giant. They might as well have just called him “Andore,” like in the Final Fight games.
one of the Judgement girls (SF3) - Ayako of Slam Dunk

i guess this kinda supports the Ryota reference. see the girl holding the N on OrangeCat’s old “PWNED” Judgement av for reference (anyone got that av btw?).
Axl Low looks pretty damn similar to Axl Rose.
yup… but Axl is the exception i think, not the rule.
I know :karate:
Axl Rose never did the whole British Flag thing though. The GG character only has that “blonde guy in a bandana stuck in the eighties” thing in common with him.
And Axl Low is probably higher tier too. G&R freaking blow.
That’s mean man, GnR are great, especially Appetite for Destruction and both Use Your Illusion’s.
Just to provide pictorial evidence. It would appear that the Orochi females were based off the said androids
Confirming. Miho Sudou hasn’t appeared in anything prior to GGXX.
Eddie Gordo (T5) = Lenny Kravitz
Feng Wei (t5) = Steven Seagal
Christine Monteiro (t5) = Jennifer Lopez
Ling Xiaoyu (t5) = Ziyi Zhang (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon)
Reading this thread hurts my soul…it has such potential too.
