In this thread, you will list which FG characters are based on other characters

…and i will ennumerate them into this first post (if they sound legit) :karate:

eg from one of EVERDRED’s posts, i recently realized:

Dudley (SF3) - John L Sullivan + Jack Johnson

etc. oh, and focus on the designs. going for just the names can be messy (Guilty Gear), and i guess we could try that too, but we get more by covering the designs.

gogogo.

EDIT:
actually, i’m not gonna list them. given my lack of knowledge of non-SF games, and time, i can’t verify everything that’s been posted. so i’m gonna leave the list here, maybe add bits and pieces if anything really obvious gets put up.

i shouldn’t have to mention that anything here (even on the list below) need not be true. like anything on the net (and SRK), it’s up to you what you want to believe .

edit:
grazie

Choi Bounge - Freddy Krueger
Big Bear/Raiden - Vader (wrestler)
Dhalsim - Gandhi?
Benimaru - Polnareff (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure)
Hagger - Jesse Ventura

whoa… “Haggar - Jesse Ventura”?
i can see that…

but i think Benimaru came before Jojo’s…

I saw the Haggar one on a site before. I don’t know if it’s true, but it seems plausible. They both have the former fighter -> politician thing going on.

The Jojo manga was around since the early 90s, I believe.

mmm… so it seems. he’s even got that… femininity Benimaru has so much of. which leaves me wondering how anyone came up with Paul Phoenix’s haircut in a character design.

wasn’t Eddie Gordo based on some famous Capoeira practitioner? or was it just his motion capture?

Mortal Kombat series: Liu Kang
World Heroes series: Kim Dragon
Dead or Alive series: Jann Lee
Street Fighter series: Fei-Long
Slam Dragon (PSOne 3D fighter): Eric Lee
Soul Calibur series: Maxi (probably the furthest from Bruce, visually, when compared with the other above-named characters, but I don’t think anyone can deny the Bruce-ness of Maxi’s voice, movements, etc.)

IMO, Q is not based on Kikaider, as another forum member has suggested. To me, it appears that Q’s design may have been slightly influenced by that of Robot Deka [Robot Detective] (LINK-1 LINK-2), a 26-episode 1973 live-action Fuji TV series (created by Ishinomori Shoutarou, creator of Kikaider, Hakaider, Kamen Rider, Cyborg 009, etc.) – Robot Deka was certainly a strong influence on the 2002 anime TV series, Heat Guy J. However, the old manga/anime character design with the strongest resemblance to Q’s would have to be the tekkamen [iron mask] robot goons from the manga (and the 3 anime series it inspired), Babiru Nisei [Babil II, or Babil The Second – released in America as Babel II]. The tekkamen robots were tall, drab-colored, humanoid automatons, usually seen wearing fedora hats, trenchcoats, pants, and gloves (very similar to Q’s appearance/garb). Babiru Nisei was created by Yokoyama Mitsuteru (creator of Tetsujin 28 [aka Gigantor], Giant Robo, Mars, Kamen no Ninja Akakage, etc.). I don’t have a link to an image of the tekkamen design as it appeared in Babiru Nisei, but a very faithful interpretation of this design was used in the first episode of the 7-episode anime video series, Giant Robo The Animation -The Day the Earth Stood Still-. Near the beginning of episode 1, Professor Shizuma is rescued by Ginrei, who is (at first) wearing a disguise based on the tekkamen robot design from Babiru Nisei.

BTW, Slam Dragon also had a Jackie Chan-inspired character named Wong Wang-Long.

Speaking of Bruce and Jackie, which one do y’all think Hon-Fu (Garou Densetsu / Fatal Fury series) takes after the most? Personally, I think he’s a little more like Jackie, being more of a comedic character, plus Hon-Fu’s whole “supercop” vibe harkening back to Jackie’s film series of the same name.

its not just John L Sullivan, u gotta also remember Jack Johnson the first black heavyweight champion of the world. jack johnson always dressed pretty snazzy and had this bow tie on when he posed for alot of pictures… its the combination of the 2 that produced Dudley as a character. capcom kinda makes a statement that goes past making a “black” or “white” character by combining the 2 men that have surprisingly shared the same jail cell at a time.

they probably made Dudley from england because Jack Johnson’s fights for the championship werent even on american soil since alot of race riots would happen if the whites saw him knock his opponents out.

i just remembered:

Jack Johnson died from a car wreck when he was going to fast (faster than 70 in his fancy sports car) and crashed into a telephone poll. he died in the hospital. Jack Johnson was always fined for driving too fast or being a public nuisance because seeing a black guy in such fancy vehicles angered white police officers around the very early 1900’s. he was known to once get pulled over and ticketed 50 dollars for speeding by a cop once and took out a fat roll of 100 dollar bills and gave the cop it one. the cop said he couldnt break 100 and Jack Johnson just said to keep the change…

i can see the connection Dudley had to his family car seeing as Jack Johnson was really into driving nice ones.

Rose from street fighter alpha was taken from Lisa Lisa from jojo’s bizarre adventure.

Baek (Tekken) - Steven seagal
Q (SF3S) - Inspector Gadget
Sonia (RotD) - Nina/Anna
Solid Sake (None FG)(MGS) - Kurt Russel
Raven (Tekken5)- Blade
Ganryu (Tekken)- E.Honda

My favorite :stuck_out_tongue:
Tekken’s Bryan - Roy Batty in blade runner.

One is referenced twice…

KoF
Kula Diamond - Rei Ayanami (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
K’ - Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop)
Maxima - Jet Black (Cowboy Bebop)
Shermie - Lynx (Saber Marionette J)
Chris - Soujiro Seita (Rurouni Kenshin)
Mature - Panther (Saber Marionette J)

Samurai Shodown
Shiki - Rei Ayanami (Neon Genesis Evangelion)

Guilty Gear
Baiken - Kenshin Himura (Rurouni Kenshin)

Last Blade
Akari - Misao (Rurouni Kenshin)

Is that true???!!

Ryu & Sagat:
http://crane.50megs.com/index6w.htm

Yes, that’s said to be the case (I still like Spike and Jet better, though).

Axl Low (Guilty Gear)= Axl Rose + Billy Kane (Fatal Fury,KOF)

75% of Axl’s moves are direct ripoffs of Billy Kane’s moves. they are both british and wear headbands. axl rose only fits into the equation because they share the same name and face.
