The problem is not losing the bar. I agree with you all, you lose the bar you lose it. The problem is in how the functionality of EX moves work for some characters. Why are we giving characters with amazing tools MORE amazing tools and not giving them to those with less tools? Instead of giving Laura and Mika actual reversals they gave them fake armored moves which get stuffed 99% of the time. Basically they need to make their startup invincible OR armor begins on earlier frames like Ryu, Ken, Chun, Karin, Rashid, and Necali get invincible frames on early frames and canāt get stuffed.
Correct. Although IMO it kind of fails in this regard because from what Iāve seen the stronger honest games win most of the time. I think that Marn run was a fun exception to the rule but weāll have to keep watching and see. Curious if Laura would be stronger with a slightly more invincible/armored bolt on her. It usually misses on crossups anyways so its almost like just a get out of jail card but no actual reversal potential.
I donāt truly know their thought process when designing V but I would assume this was to create variety in the characters. I believe the balance of it is supposed to come from certain EX moves being safer on block if they canāt be used as a reliable reversal, and of course the more reliable ones regarding startup get punished harder with automatic counter hit.
A basic design goal here was that Grapplers can get rushed down, hence no DP moves unless youāve got CA on deck. Frame 3 armor is important because the game is all about 2f traps.
Correct, but thereās an inherent flaw in this design in a game like SFV. It is heavily based on offense, so why should other characters have godlike defense? Ryu has what, 3-4 anti-airs NOT including dp? Kind of ridiculous. In reality then every invincible frame should also be frame 3, which it isnāt currently. This would put ALL characterās reversal options equal. The ironic part is that the grapplers are not given DPs so they can be rushed down, but they canāt even rush down properly because every other character can mash an EX to stop their rush down.
I know Iām a minority in this but I truly think in the grand scheme of things to make the current game more balanced a simple equalizing of reversals would help it big time. Iām probably salty because Iām suffering as a Laura/Alex player right now and Juri isnāt out so I canāt really play a more āhonestā game. Even then what would it harm to give Laura Mika and Gief 1 hit of armor? If they use it during a crossup they will still whiff. Even Hakan in SFIV had a somewhat reliable EX slide that could get him out of trouble.
Because the game is based around meaty pressure; their armor moves are for blowing through pokes, counterpokes, and delayed frametraps. The basic idea is that the scarier you are when youāre in, the less scary you are when theyāre in on you. Ryu canāt do much more than meaty/grab after a combo if that. Laura can air reset you into a left/right/high/low/strike/throw. When Ryu gets in he gets a strike/throw and then a strike/dash throw, maybe toss in an overhead at some point. When R.Mika gets in she gets a strike/throw, strike/throw, strike/throw with a possible VT for a left/right which puts her back in.
Thus grapplers have to take the pressure when they get knocked on their backs, but they donāt have to guess as often as other characters do against them. I donāt think itās perfectly balanced; Laura is one of my tougher matchups but I donāt think sheās that good nor is Zangief, but the design goals are there.
I guess Seth is the other reason why grapplers donāt get a reversal: not many people could stomach a DP - SPD mixup and the ones that didnāt got vocal enough to get the character nerfed to oblivion.
A middle ground could be to give grapplers moves that donāt deal damage to an standing opponent but provide enough movement and invulnerability to get out. EX Guacamole Legs and pre nerf EX Shootdown BackBreaker are good examples of that.
Or just learn to play around that weakness.
Every character with a command throw in the game has several ways to approach and usually some strong pokes.
If you donāt like having to play that way, donāt play those characters.
Or whine and be shitty.
Interesting. I see your point. In this regard then Mika Gief and Lauraās reversals should stay as is. Although to be fair Ryu, Ken, Cammy, Chun etc are all scary as fuck close upā¦so to that point the logic kind of falls flat. If anything going by that logic then all those with invincible reliable reversals should have their invincibility frames adjusted to compensate. That way those characters (who are all considered top tier btw) will actually be afraid of grapplers. The difference I see with Mika is that her meaties and normals are MUCH better than Gief or Laura at the momentā¦so maybe its a normals adjustment we need instead?
Laura cannot air reset any of those characters if they have a bar on deck. As soon as she resets mid-air start mashing reversal and you knock her out of it. Youāre essentially baiting a DP rather than doing an actual mixupā¦
Youā¦havenāt played Laura have you? Also Claw has a command throw with godlike pokesā¦so how is that balanced? Lol.
I play Laura. I got gold with her in 2 days. Sheās a great character and if she had a true reversal sheād be broken as hell. DeFeetLee just wrecked Iām a tournament with her in NYC and got an easy 1st place.
You just need to level up your game. Thereās nothing wrong with the game itself.
Seriously though, just because I feel like it could use some tweaks doesnāt mean I think the game is bad or anything, otherwise I wouldnāt bother playing it. Again not asking for a true reversal. A true reversal would be an invincible startup on a HP Bolt. That would be busted for sure.
Theyāre pretty godlike. Not Chun level but very good. Outpokes Laura a lot, she has to work her way in. If she gets in though and you donāt know the matchupā¦oy poor Claw.
Half the cast outpokes laura, that isnāt a benchmark really. Vega has alright pokes but has nothing on a lot of people who can easily out buttons him(like chun/birdie/alex)
