"I'm not Gouken..." Oni General Discussion Thread

This is the general discussion thread, and we are talking about Oni gameplay and balance. It’s relevant because AE2012 is still in the works. You can troll and accuse me of being bad or wanting an ez-mode character all you want, but what is being discussed here is nothing but constructive and explanatory. The character has flaws, we discuss them and point them out. By doing so, we learn about the character and what his options are, which is helpful, and we can make suggestions on how Capcom can improve him in future releases.

It’s not any different than discussing Guile and saying how much poorer his options are now that he builds no meter, etc.

You’re borderline trolling, we’re just discussing the facts and what can be done about the situation. Stop acting like we are out of line when you are the only one being rude and inappropriate.

Difference of opinion = trolling, i get it. Oni isn’t perfect he could use some minor tweaks I agree with that much, but all characters are supposed to have weaknesses it seems like you’re trying to eliminate all of Oni’s. The moveset each character has are basically a set of rules or a guideline to follow in order to play that character, Cody has nothing that’s safe, is he viable ? is he a bad character ? No, you work by the set of rules dictated by his moveset & he’s fine, even with his weaknesses.

You’re not discussing the facts you’re discussing the facts as you see them and your view of the character is overly negative.

“he is one of the absolute worst choices that you could make when picking a character in this game”

“of the 38 other characters available, nearly every single one of them is a better choice than Oni”

“Oni is a severely underpowered character”

“I don’t think Guy is anywhere near as bad as Oni, personally. I think Guy is reasonably viable, his pressure is a lot more legit than Oni’s gimmicky nonsense”

“Oni is kind of like a lie detector test, he only works if you THINK he works”

“I’m nearly positive that Oni sucks so bad expressly because Capcom was too worried about him ending up overpowered. He’s overnerfed because they were worried, but he’s borderline useless because of it”

And there’s plenty more, I mean it’s page after page of the same negative shit, there’s nothing constructive, no discussion about his good points, no ways of working with or around his weaknesses, it’s just i’m pressing buttons whenever i feel like it but i’m not winning please make him easier for me to win with Capcom OK thx bye.

Sure. And apparently for you, difference of opinion = YOU AREN’T ALLOWED TO TALK ABOUT THAT HERE.

I have repeatedly maintained that I feel his poor fireball range should stay. It defines him and forces him to have to try to get in. This is a character defining weakness that he should keep.

You’re just reading what you want to read. There’s going to be a majority of negativity because Oni has a LOT of issues, that’s just what comes with the territory. At this point you’re just disagreeing/insulting for pride’s sake and nothing else.

@MetalMusicMan you spoke my heart out nuffsaid.

I agree with Guy being a better choice, I still like Oni I don’t mind working the extra mile for now. One things good about Oni is he has super damaging combo’s with 4 meter “I’ve talked about it in the combo thread on his 500+ dmg 900+ stun” and a Super to catch ppl offguard. That being said, he is a character that needs his opponent to do a mistake while turtling at the start for meter. Pretty much this is the game plan for high level Oni play.

I believe I am playing like Youhei, if not better with more knowledge on OS and setups however I might not be as consistant as youhei on combo department. The only Oni I see who’s is really good are Wildcats and Wao for now but still haven’t utilize every combo yet especially kara demons and air demons that I’ve mention above (meter means everything for him). You guys might wanna try to play him like what’ve said there on gameplan like zoning and playing safe in the first round and then spending all the meter to win second round. I’ve spent hours in training room and played about 700~800 offline+online matches till now against solid Akuma , Ibuki, Dee Jay , Zangeif and Yun most of the time, these guys are no amateurs but with option select , mix-ups, 80% accuracy combos and on point punishment players.

Wow seriously? No, absolutely no. Oni is not one of the absolute worst choices, just… absolutely no. Have you tried playing Hakan? Dudley? T. Hawk? El Fuerte? Evil Ryu? Dan?

I can confidently say that Oni at least outclasses all of those characters handily, and would say he is even or slightly better than a few more members of the cast. Oni isn’t anywhere near “one of the absolute worst choices”.

I will say that he has weaknesses, but being able to crunch out the kind of numbers that he can off of piss-easy confirms and FADC combos disallows him a place in bottom tier. He has versatility and he has damage. He also has weaknesses, but he definitely has strengths.

Well yes, I agree that he’s better than Hakan (he’s undoubtedly the single worst character in the game as of now), but the rest of the characters you listed are all definitely better choices than Oni for the most part. At worst they are about on-par with Oni, which still leaves him (and the rest of the characters you mentioned), as some of the worst in the game. I don’t think Dudley or El Fuerte belong on your list at all, though :\

I don’t mind working the extra mile either-- I really enjoy Oni when I’m not getting hit out of demon slash from the opposite direction with a non-autocorrected move or when I’m not being completely shutout, etc., haha. Personally though I will go E. Honda probably 99% of the time in tournament, though. Even with Honda’s nerfs I think he’s still fine in AE and I’d only counterpick Oni against maybe Chun.

And yeah, his damage is crazy when you can get it-- it’s just very hard to get into a situation that allows you to do those combos. When you get the combos / mixups, it feels great though and that keeps me going back to Oni as my main friendlies character

Oni is better than Dudley.

So I shouldn’t bother picking oni up ?

I pointed out that you were being overly negative, If you were posting about what Oni needs in a rational manner i’d of said nothing.

I’m reading your posts & giving you concrete examples, you wrote this stuff.

It’s self explanatory Pride’s got nothing to do with it, You are being overly negative, it’s not constructive, it’s bloody irritating, you disagree, whatever !

If you’re picking him because he looks cool and fun then “Yes” but if you’re looking for broken stuff or having an edge against the rest of the cast then “No”.

Trying to do step-kick (fwd+MK) from block is really starting to piss me off. It’s so easy to get MK slash accidentally. Do you guys have any tricks to avoid this?

I wanted a character with high damage output and easy combos.

So u want something that doesnt need work? xP Then Oni aint for u bro…

Anyways, i dont know if some1 knew this or not, or if even it has been posted before…but here it goes:

  • when u land an ex.slash @max range(passing through a fireball for example) if u have ultra stocked(ultra1), doing the regular version(PPP) wont hit, u need to use KKK version and inputing 214x2 instead of 236x2, cause visually it shows Oni under the char, but u actually are “crossing up”.

I was testing this because it happend to me often and i wanted to capitalize instead of doing a srk.

“Whatever” indeed.

I’d say this is a good reason to play him. TC1 > Tatsu is extremely simple and very high damage, plus instant corner pressure. It’s just a matter of whether or not your opponent lets you get hose combos off, which is a another issue entirely :stuck_out_tongue:

I wanted him to be more Oki based (I played Honda very Oki oriented with Oicho Throws), but sadly it doesn’t work well for him.

Can’t the oki come from pound/grab/slashes?

It’s not that I have problem with putting work in that’s not the case. I just want a change from Cammy who’s strings are really tight or chun who’s damage output isn’t really high.

Ahh i see… Well Oni’s dmg output is good imho U have some simple combos that not only do good amount of dmg, but u can push ur opponent to the corner easily. U have some nice frame traps that can lead to some nasty counter hit setups, resets, etc. Its matter to try it out tho

I used to play a loooot of Oni. He’s an extremely fun character, that does crazy good damage and stun once in.

…but it’s really hard to get in on him on a decent player, especially players that know how slow he really is.

…and getting dizzies with him suck cause most of the time damage scaling kills any “real” damage you’d get off the stun.

So with oni what should I end combos with tatsu or srk ? his AA normals are FP and C.FP and F HK. Slash is for pressure right?

You are looking for Makoto and Yun. If you think Cammy’s combos are tight than it wouldn’t be any different playing Oni since both character have 1-2frame bnb links.

Tatsu most of the time but you can also end with LK ground pound as well for some hard knockdowns.

You are right on AAs F.HK being the furthers while st HP allows you to connect to something after a hit.
