yeah but I was kinda hoping the character I picked up would benefit from the 2012 buffs also. Oni is a very technical character?
Not entirely but he does have shenanigans that you will more or less need it to win a match most of the time. Mini vortex, kara demon , air demon , air dash tricks. If that is your definition of a technical character.
It depends on what u want - pushing the opp to corner would be with tatsu if u already in the corner do srk or ex.tatsu > b.mp xx (reset) - since both h.srk and h.tatsu deal the same amount of dmg and stun… Sooo like i said, it really depends on the screen position and what u wanna do with the opponent. And ofc as EQ2K said, using l.pound its very useful to get unteachable knockdowns and setup up some safe jumps + option selects.
Hummm there are harder characters to learn than Oni, but yeah he’s tight on combos, u’ll have to learn some essential stuff - kara-demon, kara-throw, tk air dash, option selects, frame traps and so on - so prepare to spend some time in the lab working on that. Although it can sound hard or troublesome i find it quite rewarding actually. Feels so good to land a nice reset and get a stun ^^
EDIT: Soz EQ2K, only saw what u posted after i posted my reply ^^’’
Oni is without a doubt mid tier. Just how Uryo made Sakura look godlike I’m sure someone else will do the same with Oni. He has weaknesses that might have originally been intended to be his strong point (nerfed due to fear of overpowering him) but that doesn’t make him useless. There is still a lot to discover I think.
ALSO, HE CAN AIR DASH!!! I still can’t get over that.
NEW ONI TECH. Bah. I’m so proud of myself. Okay, so you guys know the standard ex slash, b+mp hp slash? Well I decided to test it with light slash. Depending on when you do the b+mp you can make it so you’re behind them or in front of them and then combos. Don’t abuse it because just like the hard slash mix up it’s not 100% safe if you press a button, but you can block this time if you time it right and bait a mash. This shit, I swear. So happy about this.
Edit: I only tested it on hawk/ryu. I think the bigger characters its a lot more ambiguous as to where you will land but smaller characters you land pretty much behind them always.
Edit 2: nevermind, this is old tech but it seems to be slept on because I’ve NEVER seen it done, time to start working it.
Seldom use this because I wasn’t sure about the timing kinda weird sometimes they recover before my slash.
Oh yea, for anyone that doesn’t know about Oni’s neutral jump HK, it hits both side like a mini tatsu but it is not as reliable as chun li , Juri and Fei’s version
I’m going to test it against a dummy I have mashing DP. Obviously you don’t do this against a grappler but If I can recover before a 3 frame DP I’m using this, obviously the lower they are to the ground the more likely you’ll recover after they do, it’s all about timing.
Also I did notice that about his NJ.hk but it’s super slow so I try not to use it. If I’m going to air to air, I’m going to try nj.mp
I didn’t know it hit on both sides, interesting. Low active frames though, so yeah it’s probably hard to use.
Meh Oni isnt that good. He does good damage and whatnot but he has lot of dumb shit that makes him not that effective. His backdash doesn’t go very far and isnt that good, his neutral jump HP and HK plain suck and the forward and backward jump versions have a pitiful 4 active hit frames that can sometimes fuck you over when you jump in on an opponent and the dumb move runs out hit frames, doesnt hit, then you land in front of them and get thrown cause you didnt see that coming. His oki game is fairly weak since both his throws don’t really give you good positioning for shenanigans unless you are near the corner and the only airdash that anyone will use is the forward one since the other two suck.
Overall hes ok but he need tweaks if hes gonna stand out. Maybe if he a had an airdash that just made him go down to bait anti-airs or if his sweep was faster or at least make jumping HP and HK have extra active hit frames he’d be nice but as he is now its pretty uphill to play with him against some chars especially when they know that you cant FADC your SRK on block.
I probably will drop him for now, char is slow cant pressure very well, which makes the game hella boring and frustrating to play at times.
Pretty much if you get pushed back into mid range (where moves such as rekkas and Ibuki’s tsumuji reign, he has few options to deal with pressure at all at that point. It was pretty evident just now when Sanford found that “sweet spot” versus Hu’s Oni at Guard Crush.
Been saying Oni is a low tier , incomplete shoto guess nobody listens or bothers to post about those issues until now. If you play Oni and are able to live with his weakness than continue, if not just pick another character. Yes he has a lot of uphill matches and he is inferior to ryu / ken / akuma and it ain’t easy to get wins once people figure out his weaknesses.
Was already evident in the first place for me at least, horrible experience every tom dick and harry in jpn xbox lives that has above 3k pp knows the match-up and there are about 250+ srcubs to pro Oni’s there.
Basically at high level he is not a rush down character he is a turtle character that emphasize on his F+HP range to out footsie the opponent.
Whats the frame adv like after f.MK? And what are some of his decent blockstrings to use?
on hit + 2 , on block -1. The thing about his F+MK is, it takes 13frame to start-up.
blockstrings:
cr lk x3 st lk (true blockstrings) lol
cr lp , st lp , TC1 , fireball
useful pokes are , F+MK , F+HP , st HK , st LK, st MK , cr MK , st MP
Yeah, f+mk startup is pretty bad. My friends who know how to play against my Oni easily react to seeing it and just beat it with SRK, jab, etc. before the hitbox even comes out :\
You have to use it very sparingly or and really out think your opponent with it. It’s not like Ken’s where you can basically spam it all the time and not worry about anything.
hmm let me see what else you guys would like to know oh yes, Oni’s st mp beats almost every damn cr mp in the game so just OS them if you feel like they wanna randomly stick those out to os your footsies , eg ( Ryu cr mp trying to stuff your f+mk , st lk , f +hp etc ) you return the favor instead by doing st mp xx fireball.
What about frame trap strings? I’d imagine b.MP is useful here.
Any cr lp or cr lk into medium or hard could be used as frame traps during block.
I never use f.mk unless I know I’m far enough away so that they won’t be able to hit me until the hitbox comes out. It’s a really good move, not as good as ken’s but it’s another option besides jumping. For your complaining about not having any positioning after a throw, after a forward throw you can MK slash and set up an ambiguous cross up or air tatsu or hk slash and get right back in their face, after a back throw…I’m still working on that myself but yeah. standing fp is still one of the best anti airs in the game, along with his cr.fp, they beat out soooooo much, that alone puts him above low tier since he has a legit anti air, and even if he doesn’t have a safe wake up option, shouldn’t you just block on wake up anyways? I don’t get why everyone wants to risk everything and throw out a DP, so that even if its blocked they have to waste 2 meter, thats just dumb.
you know its nice to see someone with a positive attitude here:)
anyway, i think his wakeup isnt that bad. his srk is pretty damn good, except for the no fadc thingie, blocking is always nice and he even has his mk stomb that has him invulnerable on the first frame and airborne after, so its a reset if you get hit our a knockdown for you if they try to throw…and even fadcable.
i just wish his backdash went a little farther. its not useless, but it sure would be mor reassuring if you had makotos.
also: did people watch the casuals with combofiend at toronto? he sure showed some nice stuff there, like stuffing pokes with b.mp, cr.mp which seems to be a darn good antiar and constant pressure with light normals and f.mk and the fireball. i hope he keeps him as a sub at least.
