Oni isn’t a rush down character but he has ways of opening up opponents. His best tool for getting easy damage is zoning with his normals to force mistakes from his opponents. Here’s a vid from SpyTech. Watch how he uses forward fierce in this match. I could probably post more vids here but if you watch more match vids your gonna see it being used like crazy (not spamming like a moron but used frequently) for good reason. It’s got decieving recovery and does 120 damage (8 of these in a round and Yang is dead). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAWD211uaG4
f+mk is his second best tool for getting in and is relativley safe if you hit your oppenent closer to the end of the animation. The more you incorperate this into your game you will see the different situations where Oni needs this tool to be viable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oygA9ELNRy4
Another safe tool oni can use to setup big damage is his cross up tatsu. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xS7e9OEkCBw&t=2m22s
Gridman setups the ambigious cross up tatsu setups the reset by juggling with b+mp cancelled into ex.slash. The tatsu is relatively safe from being reversalled because of it’s really hard to time.
TC1 cancelled into lk.slash. This is used very often by a few japanese Onis. Using this with f+mk makes getting in and staying there very easy. If you absuse this you will get jumped on so always be ready with an anti air. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoVOoFIVvvM
I hope that helps. If you having problems getting close to people and not sure what to do when you get there these videos are a good start.
I probably wouldn’t use those resets anymore than once in a match, in fact, I personally don’tuse them at all. It’s quite easy to block EX.Slash since the opponent always knows which direction you’re going to end up at.
I also wouldn’t use MK or HK Slash because quite literally, the opponent could mash jab, remove the guessing game and punish you. Also, LK Slash doesn’t connect, but unfortunately, the recovery on whiff’s enough for the opponent to still be able mash jabs and punish you. I actually tested this all out(though this was against shoto 3-frame jabs.) Maybe they could mash out a slightly slower normal for a bigger punish, I don’t really know, but yeah, I’d take extreme caution when attempting those resets.
That’s a better alternative IMO, agreed.
Ryan Hart’s Oni is quite good, there was a weekly London tournament streamed previously and Ryan won with Oni(and Yun but he used Oni in grand finals.) Such a shame he lost to Latif in what I consider to be one of Oni’s bad MUs.
I have a question for you guys. How to you practice the cross up tatsu. Is it really just sitting in training and figuring out where above your opponent you should start the tatsu for it to cross up? I have yet to figure it out consistently…
cross up tatsu can be a bitch. throw in air dash and a crouching opponent and it gets all the more harder. unlike the normal air tatsu, cross up can only hit in one way afaik, and that is with the second hit. i think i remember you from the vega forum when i was still maining him or am i mistaken?
Nah I never played Vega. Haha, Akuma/Fei in super, then I decided I didn’t like winning so I dropped Fei and went with Oni. Also I think you can fadc hk slash on block if it hits in the front…
I would love to see a better hitbox on the demon slams, I hate getting hit out of those, or at least a hitbox behind him that does less damage, a cross up slam would be awesome.
improve backdash, that’s all it takes imo. just stop using slam and slash in a gimmicky way and you will be fine. forward st.hk should come out slightly faster maybe, it trades way too often or gets beaten clean.
Fought a few sets last week and I accidentally found out that MP Air Dash eats projectiles just like f.FP. Don’t know if it’s been discussed but it’s interesting nonetheless.
I recently got in playing SSF4 a lot more hardcore than before, and I’m trying to settle on either Oni or Evil Ryu.
What’re Oni’s biggest strengths and weaknesses, and what kind of characters does he have the most trouble with?
Hopefully you get more than my opinion, but I think Oni’s strength lies in his CH setups and ability to convert those to big damage. He gains meter quickly, so it’s pretty easy to hitconfirm into a big BNB and fadc to extend the combo.
I think to play him successfully you need to be comfortable with close-up game. His normals are a lot more laggy in recovery than they look, so you will need to use them accurately.
As far as matchups, I can’t weigh-in. I will say that I haven’t played one match where I thought Oni had an advantage, except maybe T.Hawk, Hakan, maybe Makoto.
My breakdown so far:
Normals : B-
AA: B+
FB/Zoning: C-
Damage: A
Defense: C+
Mixup : B- (Might be C- once people start blocking Slash)
CH Setups : A
Hopefully that gives you some insight as to how I feel he ranks. Good luck.
Thanks. After some test playing. I actually like Evil Ryu better. Oni and Akuma have very similar problems. When it comes to cracking the nut, they’re not particularly good at it. Akuma relies on the opponent making mistakes, and Oni relies on the baiting the opponent to him, at least that’s what I’ve had to do when I use them both. Evil Ryu is fun because he has an easier time getting on the inside and breaking the figurative turtling nut. And I really like his close range mixup game, one of the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of using without being too technical. As far as Oni, he does feel really sluggish, and the main turnoff is that he feels very stiff and uninspiring in his style. Definitely agree on his meter build-up, though. It’s pretty insane. I just really find E. Ryu to have more tools to win than Oni, imo.
