all of a sudden for Oni,im using his jumping medium punch for bait attack and its working for me. idk y but its pretty useful to me
How do you guys get in against opponents?
This. I swear, I watch the high level vids and I’m all like “why didn’t that guy block or throw?” My opponents seem to be wise to all my tricks. Lately I’ve been working on getting mass combos off of 2x:d::lp:.
Do you want to close the distance or open your opponent up for big damage?
I was messing with Oni yesterday and I found something interesting. Of all simple combos into Ultras after an EX Slash the one that does more damage is the upward Ultra 1. You do EX Slash, dash, Ultra 1 with KKK. It does 400 dmg instead of 385 of regular forward U1. It’s just a little thing but it’s more effective nonetheless.
You guys probably know this already, but I haven’t seem many Oni players using it.
Yeah all 3 Variations of U1 do different Damage: Full U1 > Upwards U1 > Air U1 > Normal U1
If you can get the Upwards U1 to hit it is good to use it but most of the time they will wind up behind/in front of you so the normal :3p: version is used because its easier to hit. If you have the timing down to get the Dash in there or a well placed hit yes by all means use the :3k: version. XD
how are people fairing with oni in their respective local tourneys? I used him a week after ae came out and I went 2-2 or something. I got knocked out by someone I normally don’t even get nervous about fighting with Chun.
I wish I could answer this but I have no Local scene
That’s shitty man. You can’t beat playing offline with fighting games, but at the same time it’s popluarity can hinge on it’s online functionality. Someone challenged me to a ft5 for 10 bucks money match last night just to have something to fight for. I picked oni and won the first match and lost the second. I didn’t want to lose so I picked Chun and plowed him 4 in a row.
I’m currently main Gouken and now Oni. One thing that has helped a lot with Gouken was keeping opponents in hard knock down > repeat/mix up, to keep them from running away etc. A vortex strategy if you will.
I haven’t read all of these pages, but has anybody discovered anything of significance in that area that they’d like to share? From what I can tell he seems to have a bunch of ways to put you in hard knock down that leads to a pressure game.
did you guys know that boss oni has ex air dash and you can cancel it into his jumping normals ? wtf man, better add that in AE 2012
Yea. I wish Air Dash could be canceled into normals it’ll make Oni 100x better.
im goin to a tournament today. there should be a stream. ill link it when i find it.
Did you find the link for the stream?
no stream. i played oni first 3 rounds. then played viper in winners semis / finals and grand. i won.
For those of you who are interested a user from Srk compiled some ae statistics:
I for one never pay attention to tier lists. Anyone can make a bad character good or a good character bad, nuff said.
With that I get on to what I have learned. As far as I can tell Oni seems to be like a pretty good character overall. It is ridiculously easy to combo into his ultras in the corner from standing lp. From a jump in you can mix it up high and low with lk and lp until you land and lp, which you can link with his target combo (back mp->hp). From the hp of the target combo you can cancel into Heavy Tastu (or EX), light Demon Palm, light Demon Slash, or Shoryuken (any kind).
I have also had much fun with Aerial Meido Gohado (Ult 1), still have not used to anit-air one though. His anit-air game is stellar in my opinion. Crouching hp stuffs many attemtps directly above him, and standing hp (or Shoryuken) are for directly infront of him.
I will admit that his fireball is a bit tricky to use. I mostly just use the light version, on knockdown by the time you fully charge it it has reached the opponent and they are forced to block it. The lightning ball, sadly, does not have many uses beyond giving you the edge in a fireball war. If you land the EX one though you can combo into Ult 1.
I have also found a few helpful linking moves:
Standing lp->Standing hp or Standing hk (have not found a use for heavy kick link).
Standing lp->Target combo
That’s all for now. If this has been stated before I apologize, but I really don’t feel like reading through 14 pages of comments to “catch up”.
P.S. Oni is definitely unique, however it is his exact blend of tools which has led me to LOVE him and make him my main.
P.S.S. I found all this stuff out on my own.
Welcome to srk. Much if not all of what you just posted is wrong.
-High low mixup =/= jumpin attack followed up by either cr.lk or cr.lp. Either cr.lk or cr.lp are blockable by holding down back. A high low mixup would be using f.mp and followed that up with cr.mk for example.
-The target combo you are referring to is one of two he has and is refferred to as tc2. This is approch of linking tc2 is bad unless you can confirm that he wasn’t crouching when you started to chain your cr.lp or cr.lk because the hp in the tc2 will whiff leaving you wide open.
-You can cancel tc2 into lk and mk versions of tatsu as well as hk and ex.
-He has 3 versions of his U1 (airborn, grounded, and anti-air)
-All his fireballs are important to his zoning game. Watch match videos and see how they are used in different senarios.
-st.lp > st.hp is not useful unless you know something every other high level oni doesn’t. It’s a brutal frame trap and whiffs on crouching apponents
-st.hk is useful for breaking focus attack but not as useful as st.mk because mk comes out faster and there is less frames between when the second hit comes out.
-st.lp > tc2 (I’m assuming this is what your reffering to) is only useful if you can confirm they are going to be standing. An example of this would be after a blocked rekka from too close where you can punish with st.lp > whatever. Very situational.
-The post I quoted above is not a tier list. It’s a complation of the 10 top players of each respective character Battle points averaged out. Teir lists have matchup statistics.
It took me a while to correct all your mistakes and I’ll tell you why I did this. SRK is supposed to be for high level tactics. The stuff you posted is better sutied for eventhubs or gamefaqs. Now return the favor and take some time and “catch up” before you share your findings. Before you get all butt hurt I’ll tell you right now to bottle it up cause i don’t care if your feelings are hurt by this. Take what I wrote as favor to a newbie. If you had been around longer I would have really put you blast cause people who’ve been around long enough know that if everyone with an opinion posted up then the forums would be gutter trash just like eventhubs for gamefaqs.
tl/dr read more post less until you found something new or have questions.
Alright, I can accept that.
lol i halfway wrote a reply to that post yesterday but decided to not waste my time…
aka dont feel like catching up
