So what so you guys feels like ONIs tier level is
No tier. Everything he has is unsafe. He’s got no mixup, no wakeup, no answer to mobile characters, and no pressure on wake.
I was playing around in the lab earlier and I noticed that you can FADC Oni’s F.HP when absorbing a fireball with it. Does this have any advantages/good follow-ups? I’ve not seen it in any matches so I’m afraid the answer is no but I thought if anyone would know they’d be on here hehe Also sorry if this has already been covered, cheers!
LMAO! This. But that’s why I main him. Because he is totally TestTube Baby Tier.
Theoretically speaking, you would be completely safe as you will land during the recovery frames of your opponent’s fireball animation — Because in order for this to work you have to already have had the :f:+:hp: out close enough to them to FADC. If you were full screen and managed to cancelling :f:+:hp: into FADC, you wouldn’t be close enough to do anything to them.
Keep this in mind though:
If you FA from :f:+:hp: at maximum range, you are -3 on block. Anything closer and you’re worse.
If you FA from :f:+:hp: at maximum range, you are are -2 to -1 on hit. You aren’t at any advantage.
I also forgot to mention that in certain situations you can be up to +3 on counterhit; enough to give you a close jab or a crouching one.
(Tested utilizing Chun Li MK Super for punish, Ken Super for Punish on hit.)
So no, you might as well throw this out of the window unless you plan on teching the throw or blocking the reversal DP.
Edited. Thanks Shakatazuki.
Fixed!
Should be good now.
Not worth the meter then hehe, thank you for the detailed info!
Right now, I don’t think he’s good, at all, he feels very unsafe and clunky. And his normals don’t seem to be as good as they appear imo, so I’m finding establishing a ground game against certain characters extremely hard. But it’s early days yet and I’m no Oni pro. If there was some way to use his slashes more safely, or in an effective manner, that would help.
or you can use normals for footsies instead of wanting specials to be safe on block.
^ quite true.
btw. has anybody checked the frame data on f.mk? the frame data thread says its +2/-2 an +5 on CH, which is better than kens, which seems to be generally feared, so onis cant be that bad even if its a little slower right?
just noticed that nobody elaborated on this, while i had a little succes wiht it already.
Got that wrong my friend -2 on block +2 on hit is -2/+2 so yes it’s about the same overall but the hitboxes is where it really is different. Ken’s > Oni’s but Oni’s is still not terrible or anything, just not amazing.
You can use MK slash to go through fireballs really the only one I use except for gimmicks or LK slash combo’s. Oni’s only real problem imo is that his cr. MP is 5 frames instead of 4 and his Misogi-like move isn’t safe. Give me that and I could use him against anyone effectively. Also wtf is up with his misogi move NOT breaking armor?
Meh, tbh i think people need to “dive” moar into the char, dont stick with just the “usual”, gather info - study the best players, mixups, resets, best tools for a footsie game. I dont mean to offend anyone, but what i see writen in this section could be described like…“if i cant serve coffees when i pick the char then it sucks”. Oni’s not the regular char to pick up and do everything right at the start, he’s not ur ordinary shoto char, hence that, study the damn character, get to know the pro’s and con’s of him, if u really wanna play seriously with it, if not…dont waste ur time.
Btw, dont start thinking about the possible rebalance for AE, what u wanna out of Oni’s move list, what u wanna in the move list…deal with the tools provided, those same tools serve the purpose to win games, to mindcrack ur opponent, to have FUN, ya’ll just need to learn how to use them. Simpler said than done, aye, but without effort u wont achieve nothing. Also some characters need more time to grasp than others, take that and think first before posting that Oni sucks, yada yada yada. I’ve played with Vega since Vanilla, went through buffs and nerfs, yeah i didnt like all of the changes, some i thought they were stupid…but, my opinion wont change a thing, i have to evolve&adapt and i still win games with him. Everyone that wants to step up the game in general, and with Oni, should do the same, like im doin with Oni atm as well.
Wrap it up and step it up folks. Oni’s no slouch at all.
Thank you for all the information provided people, im gathering some of my own and will share ^^
I didn’t want to be the one to say it.
Who said I wanted specials to be safe on block lol? And who says I don’t use his normals? In matches, I use normals pretty much 90% of the time.
When I meant using his specials safely, I’m not talking about blockstrings. I actually mean as part of a mix-up that doesn’t leave you open. I saw one of your vids where you managed to land a reset off Hurricane into b.mp and I think you also cancelled the b.mp reset into Slash for a left or right mix-up. Something more along the lines of that, but the Slash doesn’t hit so you’re safer and you land left or right depending on which strength you used. But that’s gimmicky as fuck though lol.
Apart from airdash backwards just to get some breathing space and to avoid some stuff, what uses do his other airdashes have without putting yourself at a pretty bad risk? Like, yes, he’s meant to play footsies but how else should his specials be used without risk or more safely? That’s what I’m talking about. Not having safety on block.
EDIT: I’m fighting Yun/Fei on a regular basis so that’s skewing things a lot haha. Also, my reset idea isn’t safe at all, regardless on block or whiff, period. Oh well.
after hard knockdown TKed lp airdash>HK tatsu is practically riskless . didnt have a reversal autocorrect on it yet. sadly i often forget to use it. i dont think its a “safejump” setup though.
i guess mp airdash can be used for crossup, but i never used it in a match.
also against yun: jabs
Thanks Seyu. Yeah, jabs work well against Yun in general, I should just mash 'em out more often. The main issue I was having before with Yun was that his shoulder special was going under a good amount of my pokes and f.hp is considered a projectile, so that got beat out too. But now I punish that on reaction more regularly now, more or less.
And yeah Sephiroth, MK Slash goes through fireballs, you just can’t screw it up lol.
forward + forward is my best friend. it helps me get to the running away fuckers. so i usually follow up with a medium punch seeing how people like to mash it out afterwards. but i think using a jab is much better. i dont use forward + fierce because of the weird step forward oni does. that awkward amount of space you “distribute” is weird for me.
i went to a tourney earlier this week and like i heard people saying that oni could be mashed out, but those fuckers didnt do it when i fought them. if anything they got blown up. so im gonna say: just enjoy yourself. i know i do.
- plink the crouch HP
2 & 3. take out the st.lp, just do fwd~mp+mk~fwd > b.mp - plink the b.mp’s
cr.lk, cr.lp, cr.hp~cr.mp xx lk slash, fwd~mk+mp~fwd > b.mp~b.lp, b.mp~b.lp xx hk tatsu
