"I'm not Gouken..." Oni General Discussion Thread

after that reset yo can bet people will low guard until the situation is safe again so it usually works against you. I tried a very aggressive oni when i started maining him and this was one of the options i tried a few times.

A second ex slash has a better chance of landing and the window to punish on block is smaller and tirckier than a whiffed ex shoryu.

I save this setup for the end of the match because it only works once, all the other times i go for F+hk or ultra instead of b.mp reset.

During the fight, i always facing the problem of slash and stomp… Whenever i want to stomp people, the slash came out…
Any better way for the input so that they wont mix up??

i think all Oni users struggle with that at least at the start. My advice is drop input shortcuts if you use them,

slash is coming out because you are pressing F, DB,B,DF,F but since the shortcut for HCF motions starts with DB instead of B you get the slash so make bloody sure you are NOT pressing DB when you want stomp.

Practice and it will improve your execution for all characters because it will make your DP input faster and cleaner.

If you smell a backdash, light slash is a super good punish as it will put them into an juggle state, letting you follow up with a full 3-hit shoryu. LK slash to MP shoryu does like 300 damage, and on top of that it’s safe if you guess wrong or mistime it. Especially nice off an option-selected safe jump.

After playing a couple weeks of Oni here is what I am finding.

Putting pressure on - Use whatever way works for you to get an lp slash, then you have a few options. You can do another string. If you’re opponent is blocking, you just have another free block string. If your opponent starts to throw you, you can tech the throw or do a normal smash. If your opponent crouch techs a lot you can do EX smash to gaurentee a hit on overhead. If they back dash you can do an LP slash.

On untechable knockdown - This is where I feel right now Oni excels. You have multiple options. walk up and striaght up go into another blockstring or combo, use EX overhead to go through crouch tech attemtps (and some EX wake ups too!, i have gone through Guy’s ex tatsu on wake up and smashed him on the other side). EX Slash if the opponent sucks at blocking. Some advanced things I want to try are doing stuff like airdash to setup an ambiguous air tatsu (no idea if this works yet). Regular f.mp overhead works too, and I think it leaves you with minimal disadvantages (haven’t been punished much).

Thats all for now.

Do you mean after a blocked lk.slash? Cuz you are going to get counterhit a lot if you try to do another blockstring after a blocked lk.slash since you’re -2 at point blank range.

I guess I just like having my opponent thinking about all my reversal options instead of 1 that can be easily baited because its my only option, look at seth, that guy can dp/ex, command grab/ex and I think he has invincibility on his ex spin kicks but then again those moves have some great priority so I guess I my point kind of invalid lool

It’s been known.

Yo i was labbin with Oni today and his straight up jump medium beats E Honda Sumo Splash, Chun li’s Ex Spinning Bird Kick. Im still labbin with him and see what else move it beats out. That moves completely shuts those moves down.

Yeah it’s a good move to avoid some trades from grounded normals. it’s almost like gouken’s neutral jump hp but with a shorter range.

Hello everyone, I have started training with Oni, and as far as I know his target combo 2 (b.mp+b.hp) wiff on crouching opponents. I wonder if there’s any move that would put your opponent in a standing position, like for example cr.lp. I have been trying that in training mode, but strangely enough, when I put my dummy in crouching position and I do: cr.lk,cr.lp,st.lp, he just blocks the st.lp not letting me finish the combo… but when the dummy is in a standing position I can do that combo without any problem at all.

Any ideas/suggestions for using his target combo 2 without having the risk of making it wiff?

Thanks a lot ^

cr.HP puts opponents in standing state. So, for example, for longer FADC combos, you do cr.HP>Fireball/Slash FADC into your TC2 combo of choice.

If you don’t have meter to spend though I just perfer going for TC1>whatever, since it works on everyone.

Keep in mind st.LP does not hit everyone right, in general, and prorates like hell.

It also stuffs T. Hawk’s Condor Dive.

Also regarding combo-ing on crouchers I prefer b+mp over TC1 because it can cancel into stomp.

thanks for the answers =), gotta try links with cr.HP then.

And Zanguief2000, you’re right, by reading the combo section I found some useful information.

Cheers!

guys I heard a rumour about capcom rebalancing AE for 2012, now if this is true we can possibly get them to change Oni into an oki character, I no this may seem stupid and crazy but we could make a thread expressing how oni should be lool the title would be called “Oni, why do you look badass but play like ass” or “capcom, make Oni legitamate”. Personally I’d like to see air dash removed and have him given a low jump arc similar to balrog’s and a 360 command grab, I basically just want Oni to be an all out offensive character that sacrifices defence because right now he doesn’t excel at anything and AE is all about that offence, so far he’s just a gimmicky character sigh

I’d just like the recovery time to be removed.

Actually they did the opposite, they nerfed most of the strong characters and only gave a certain few minuscule buffs whereas the “weak” characters have now become more viable in tournament play e.g deejay, makoto, juri, hakan, dan or gen even lool I think they nerfed a few weak characters because of how abusable something was but those same characters still got buffed, the only thing that makes this game obviously unbalanced is yun, his high mobility, high dmg/stun output, priority, command grab along with his mix ups easily land him at the top. they will rebalance AE

or make it cancellable into HP and voila he has a demon flip and his tier will sky rocket

If they do rebalance AE, i’m pretty sure they will nerf the twin’s command throw. It’s just too good. it might end up getting a slower start-up.

anyway, as for Oni, i don’t really see anything wrong with him. I know he can’t FADC his SRK on block, but being able to do that is just a bit too much.

Oh there is something that really annoys me. Oni’s air-fireball ultra is somewhat useless and it’s so slow. It would be nice if you could do it closer to the ground, like Akuma in 3rd Strike. If that did happen, i would probably use it to punish wake-up throw with jumpback.airUltra and it would probably open up a lot of combo possibilities.

his defence is bad but I can live with that, what I can’t live with is his medicore offence , barely makes up for his poor defence, I mean how many times do you use air dash in a round ? about once or twice, he really doesn’t need it, if this guy had a low jump arc that would make his jump attacks way more ambiguous, he’d gain a few more safe jump set ups too and that along with his walk speed would make him much better.
