Welcome to the most lop-sided Blanka match-up in the game. It isn’t a pretty place. In this match-up, c.strong and max-outs are the two safest moves that Dee Jay has, and it’s exactly what you have to stop Dee Jay from doing to have a chance. You never want to be full-screen’s distance away because Dee Jay can just wait for you. What you want to do is get around 3/4 to mid-screen’s distance. That gives you more guessing games to play with. I’ll write in some more stuff when I get to my break.
Did everyone know that you can buffer short ball into super? I was screwing around in training mode and got it to come out a few times.
Its seems like a nice trick, but nothing earth shattering.
If you go into super too close to shotos, the damage is pretty minimal unless you’re holding that punch button.
Sorry if everybody already knows this, but at least I bumped this thread back to the first page.
Oh and Bluetallcans, someone said that you played at EVO. I think we all would love to hear your thoughts on Blanka’s matchups in the face of that stiff comp.
Yeah, here is the link. It’s cool though. This thread needed a bump.
Yeah, I’m wondering about BlueTallCans myself. It looked like he was there along with his friend Mongolorobocop. I would like to find out how they both did.
Bluetallcans lost in the 1 round because he had to face 2 Balrog-Players as far as i know, i thing he was very unlucky or got couterpicked because ROg is such a hard matchup for Blanka
I ended up getting double jeopardy against a blanka (played him twice and got knocked out) at evo. Only got to play one other person. I got jumping short - facebitten more times than I can count. I even tried to counter-pick with bailrag and failed because once he landed a jump short it was his round. I distinctly remember the last round, he jump shorts and bites, and I mash harder than I’ve ever mashed in my life. He doesn’t even counter mash. I lose 60% of my life. I’m so disheartened by how much life I just lost he just does another walk up throw. Fuck blanka. That’s easily the hardest throw to counterthrow IMO. I feel fine being beaten by a blanka who is good zoning and pokes, but god damnit. To just lose to hella facebites… Shit sucks.
I’m not 100% sure but I think Balrog’s throw range might be equal to or greater than Blanka. The last few times I’ve had someone try to j. short tick throw I’ve mashed strong and more often than not I’ll end up smashing my forehead into Blanka’s skull. Or were these poorly executed tick throws? In anycase, as Blanka, shouldn’t you be able to reversal throw (one button I know, but if you mash, maybe something’ll happen)?
I’m pretty sure Blanka has the largest normal throw range in the game, equal to Dhalsim only and beaten by the command throws.
Here’s a table comparing the +/- of throw ranges for the different characters based on the link given by Sharizord. Off the top of my head I recall that Balrog had his throw range reduced in HDR, not sure about any others.
Every time I try and tick a good Honda into a throw I get my ass Ochio’d for free. It always seems like a better idea to finish your combos against the fat man.
If boxer gets stood up by the j.LK, then it can be problematic for him. The thing is, he can just sit there sticking out c.MP and if you jump c.HP trades in his favor at worst. There’s also the buffalo head butt to knock Blanka out of the air. Blanka has to get pretty creative to open up opportunities.
Once boxes starts going on the offensive Blanka has some anwers, but a patient and defensive turtle ROG is a LOT like playing a Turtle Claw. (Shakes fist in Shari’s direction.)

Decoy and Cans have some NASTY Blankas, they make me more stressed than anyone lol. That was a really slick video, too.
For Evo Results:
I started of playing an average Balrog my first match and got caught off guard since I had to play at nine in the morning(In Vegas time this is too early) and he ended up beating me. Sent me to losers bracket where I played a SIM that didn’t even come close to beating me a round. My next match was against Graham Wolfe beat him the first match then he beat me then it came down to the last round in the last match with both of us having very little life and I jumped in too early and got crounching fierce punched.
That was probably my 9th game the whole time I was there and only my third game that morning. I guess I should have practiced in the room or something but it was too early.
I also played in the regional 3v3 tournament for NorCal where we got second losing to DamDai, Nohoho, and Technical Monkey after we had sent them to losers because I beat there whole team with Blanka they came back and beat us in the Grand Final twice. I lost both of those times to Chun Li. The videos will be up soon I am sure it was a pretty good side tournament. I also finally go to meet and play nohoho after only talking to him on here. He’s got skills for sure and he is a really cool guy. Our match in the tournament was pretty good too, I just barely squeezed by him.
BlueTallCans
They’re nasty alright. Just plain mean.
Here’s another pro-tip that everyone already knows. (I’m like Gamepro over here!)
j.Rh, s.Mp, s.Rh combos from the front, no crossup necessary. A lot of times if you finish this with s.Fp the opponent is out of range.
This looks like about 40% damage or so, probably a little less.
Anyone know if this is a one frame link? KP I’m looking in your direction.
I gotta stop drinking at night…
Yoga Book Hyper PDF Link for Blanka’s Hitboxes.
Just a few fuzzy hungover observations:
neutral jump Fierce is nuts. No blue box on his arm at all, and the red hitbox extends way past his hand
standing short AND crouching short don’t have blue boxes on the leg, but s.Sh has an even smaller blue box on his body
his arms on s.Mp and s.Jab are invulnerable
I believe neutral j.mk has a beefy hitbox too.
“Useless Combo” Update!
j.RH, s.MP, s.RH from the front, hit a little meaty:
NEVER
works against crouching opponents
Completely wiffs against: Chun-li
Looks like it will work, but won’t against: Deejay, Shotos, Blanka, Claw
WILL
hit the rest of the cast if they’re standing for good damage and stun
ALSO
s.RH can replace s.FP in the B&B cross-up combo, as the startup is the same (YBH)
if blocked will push your opponent WAY back
I just spent an hour of my Friday night testing this BS! :annoy:
I’m wondering, not having much experience in O.G st, have the changes made any difference for blanka in the balrog and deejay matchups?
Those always seemed to me some of the hardest matchups in the game but it doesn’t seem anything has changed. Sort of annoyed that sirlin seemed to have ignored these matchups.
I’ve seen Sirlin say in the forums on his website that no one really beats Blanka. I don’t want to call the man out our anything seeing as he knows more about this game than I ever will, but some of the match-ups are a real pain.
It seems to me that Claw, Boxer, and Deejay are REALLY uphill battles. Like, 7-3 in their favor.
Then again I’m really terrible.
No one beats Blanka? The man knows way more than I do but that is retarded. I would like to hear some sort of explanation on that from him because as far as I know Deejay and Boxer are pretty much unanimously regarded as stupid hard matchups for Blanka.
