I play on PC with a pad, and poorly. I have a little over 5k BP and B rank, which I somehow managed to rack up. I haven’t played in a while though. I feel like I’ve gained the points by picking my fights and abusing gimmicks and while doing so I learned very little in the way of fundamentals. Now I’m afraid of losing points which is of course a ridiculous notion as BP don’t matter and 5k isn’t terribly much to begin with. But being that as it may, while in a match, I’ll find myself doing whatever fraudulent tactics it takes to win, and it’s impeding on my learning of the game. I would just get rid of the BP if I could, and rather with a reset rather than feeding them to some randoms online which takes forever and doesn’t really give them good matches either. I did play some matches picking random characters but it’s slow as hell and I sometimes accidentally win. Man…I would choose not to gain points if I could. It’s like as soon as points are involved my brain doesn’t listen and some kind of stubborn instinct urges me on to do whatever it takes to win. By the way, endless matches aren’t an option on pc it seems.
So um, a way to reset bp? Anyone want em? Anyone else feel this way?
Deleting your save data will NOT work, at least on PS3. The points are attached to your online account. As for the reset button, I’m not sure. I know you can do it in MvC3, so it would make sense that Capcom would put the same feature in SFIV.
There’s probably a thread somewhere on here about SFIV fundamentals, so if you can’t reset your rank you could go check that.
No way to reset your points unless you willingly lose them in ranked by throwing up fights. Either that or you make yourself a new account, which of course would cost you another copy of the game.
Anyways, being at B rank means that you would be facing better opponents. Just take advantage of that and try to learn from them. In my opinion being at C-rank is the best experience I ever had.
I’m kinda the same as you. I have 10,000 BP, B+ rank but I’m definitely aren’t as good as my rank indicates. I don’t choose my matches though. For the most part I play stronger foes unless I’m REALLY out of their league then I may back out if I run into them again.
I never cared about points before in SF4 but it wasn’t until I teamed up with my friend in SFxT who cares about his points that I started caring too.
The good thing is now that I finally hit B+ I feel more carefree about my points. My friend too. We haven’t been using our mains much lately.
I wouldn’t worry too much about it, just get in endless and practice, practice, practice
I’m mean hell I’m only C rank but beat up on B’s and some A’s all day – it is all about time dedicated to learning the game.
besides I’m certain the 2013 patch will probably reset everyones accumlated points just like AE did for SSF4.
Pretty much this. I’m at B+ but it was largely just a grind, not an indicator of my skill. Best thing to do is just abandon ranked for a while, find some good players you can get consistent matches with and grind it out whenever you can in Endless rooms. You learn a lot more that way, since in ranked it can be easy to get that one quick win (I still say they need to have at least a 2/3 rule for ranked matches to kinda’ mean something).
Rayartz - I actually don’t think they’re going to reset the points, since this is more a giant balance tweak than a full-on new add-on with new characters like AE was. This is more akin to the v2012 update.
there’s no way to reset your points… but a couple things (which i dunno if they were mentioned already or not)
you said it yourself points dont matter. play as you normally play. you will lose points and balance will be restored.
the best thing you can do tho honestly is play offline or in endless. if you play ranked you’re going to look at points. If you insist on playing ranked ignore the points. This problem is pretty common where you have a lot of people that use online tactics to win that wouldn’t normally work offline (empty jump to lows for example), and while it is annoying to lose to such devices, the fact is that this online environment is not the same as an offline environment. Now if you do not intend to play offline seriously, then online “scrubby” tactics arent really that important to work on fixing anyway since although it leads to bad habits, the reason it’s bad wont really affect you.
However, i dont see the points issue as your main problem. The main problem i gather from what you’ve mentioned is that you are not playing skilled enough opponents You tend to panick. When you panick it’s common and normal to want to fall back on what would be considered reliable. In this case your tactics are what you consider reliable. However, you acknowledge that your tactics are not reliable after all. Well… one way to break that habit is to play people that dont fall for that unreliable trick. Either you will be stubborn and never win, or you will learn and adjust not making the same mistakes over and over again. “Scrubby tactics” are only scrubby if the opponent doesnt fall for it. If they fall for it then you simply outplayed them because they were dumb enough to fall for it. Does that mean you were the better player? Not necessarily. It just means you played better than them to get the win. Now a 2nd 3rd or 4th win probably wont work out so well if you’re not actually the better player. But one of the biggest motivators for learning and improving is to lose. It’s good because it gives you a wake up call saying that the shit you’re trying to pull aint gonna work so come up with something else. The best way to lose is against someone better than you.
Now if you just insist on points actually mattering, then you’re just not ready to take the next stem to improve your game. Caring about points will hold you back from learning more than anything else. Buta workaround is to make a troll account where you dont care about the points you lose. But this comes with 2 big problems. The vast majority of good players that play ranked have a lot of points, and a lot of them care about them. If you go and play with your zero point character, chances are they wont ever play you again because they only get 1 point for beating you where they lose 114. So now you’re resorting to playing randoms with the occasional good person that’s either trolling or trying out ranked after a long break. The other issue is that at some point you will have a lot of points on your troll account. Potentially more than on your main account (since you care less about points and focus more on the game). As you gain more points you’ll care about those points more too. You’ll end up a better player but still plateau only to have to make another troll account so you stop caring about points again.
A lot of what you say makes sense. I’m certainly not going to insist that BP matter. I do enjoy collecting them, but I shouldn’t let them impede on my learning.
It’s not just the points, I just have some bad habits to unlearn. Also, I have a gen 1 PS3 TE stick that refuses to work on my MBP and I’ve had to resort to using a pad, and since I only started using a stick in 2009, it was all backwards for me again. I got really into fighting games again then, due to SF4, but there’s no scene here and I’ve basically just been online warrioring it up.Plans for dual modding the stick are in the works, though.
I’ll be in practice mode grinding out a combo or whatever, and then I go online and can’t do it anymore, due to “panic” or whatever. For that reason I hit a plateau on my Cody around 5k BP in AE, too.
