If you hate on Viscant for picking Phoenix, you're a scrub

Shit man, you play to win and get cred for beating the shit out of others, it’s well placed, imo. Also the fact that you want to take home prize money.

OH YEAAAAAH, I remember that thread topic now. Was that “play to win” topic iirc. I remember liking that topic as well, lol.

It’s a problem yes, but also the beauty of playing Mahvel. You really can’t tell what will happen in each big tournament, and that’s how it should be (it’s something that turned me off to playing MvC2, the lack of sheer randomness and new technology). And considering that MvC3 is way more diverse than MvC2, it really will take some time to simmer and mature. (Un)Fortunately, everything starts at square one with Ultimate.

Well you already half answered your own question. Plus Tokido AFAIK innovated a style of Phoenix that actually has a risk to it. Which is burning your XF1 ALL THE TIME on a Phoenix team. It was a real mind fuck for a lot of people early on because against most Phoenix players you can kinda just know they’re going to play more tame and you’ll get your chance to snap in. Tokido had no problem burning XF on a PHOENIX team to kill people off and the power of XF1 Wolverine being able to crumble teams nearly as fast as XF3 DP could was an interesting take on the Phoenix team play style. It allowed him to win 2 major tournaments pretty convincingly before people started finding counters (mostly in Haggar assist).

My reasoning for calling Viscant a fraud is different from others, I guess. I called him a fraud for abandoning Phoenix and trolling with Storm when he didn’t know wtf. If you’re gonna lose, lose with some sort of grace and civility and play what you know.

Tokido’s Phoenix really can’t be compared to the run-of-the-mill, wait til level 5, x-factor DP troll. He took liberties to use both Phoenix and DP to the fullest, which is truly how I feel she should have been used since day 1.

But then why didn’t people call Jwong a scrub for playing with storm when it was obviously an inferior team (that he didn’t know as well?)

Oh yeah, he won, lol.

Viscant has been playing a DHC glitch based Storm/Morrigan/Tron team for a while so it’s not like he doesn’t know how to play Storm. It’s just his Storm clearly isn’t on the level that Wong’s is.

Lolol. I’m basically agreeing with you and DevilJin. We three know Viscant would have done his possible best with a DP based team. Switching it up for a team you’re still working on in the lab was pretty lame and a bad choice. JWong’s Storm has been in the making a month or so before Evo even dropped (if not longer), he wanted to use her as anti-Phoenix technology.

But yeah, still a win.

Dude, I agree with you on the other shit in this game being pretty stupid, but Phoenix as a character in this game just never sat well with me. I’m not going to go into detail about it because I’ll start rambling but let’s just say her turning into Dark Phoenix is a waste in my eyes because her normal form is more then formidable enough. DP is a stupid gimmick and I hope it fades away faster and faster by the day.

Phoenix was just one of those ‘somebody had a crazy yet impractical idea, and they chose to go with it anyways!’ things.

Anybody looking at the design document had to know she’d either be trash or OP.

Ironically I like to think they that they perceived Arthur in the same light, as I can’t see any valid reason to actually punish him for powering up like so many other characters in the game can.

“OH MAN ARTHUR WITH GOLD ARMOR IS SO BROKEN SHIT EVERYONE ITS LIKE FIGHTING AGAINST VIC VIPER”
“LET US PUNiSH HIM BY HAVING HIS ARMOR BREAK ENTIRELY AND LEAVE HIM IN AN OTG’ABLE STATE”
“YES, LETS”

:frowning:

Unfortunately Capcom likes the Dark Phoenix factor and finds that the most unique thing about her. So that will stay in all of its power it’s just now regular Phoenix is garbage character that will die to snap backs and any random mix up since she can’t protect herself without assists anymore. They want fighting a Phoenix player to be a race against time where the longer you don’t kill the pawn…the better chances of the pawn turning into a game dominating queen.

Now you know armor explosion was a gimmick. :stuck_out_tongue: Worked against him, but yeah.

In the same vein, I’ll have to disagree on DP being a gimmick. The community simply just needed to get their mentalities past DP being overpowered by getting their anti-phoenix technology up. After what I saw at Devastation, I’m now questioning the coming nerfs to Phoenix (mind you I don’t even like the character at all). She’s nerfed to hell now anyways.

oh c’mon, its entirely a gimmick.

“Fishing for likes.” lol.

Um, being able to counter against / work around the gimmick doesn’t negate it being a gimmick.

Dark Phoenix is like the tie in action figure, they’ll slap that on the front of the box in huge shiny bright letters.

“NOW PLAY AS REGULAR JEAN GREY AND DARK PHOENIX! COMES WITH MALICIOUS LAUGH AND INTERCHANGEABLE ANGRY BITCH HEADS”

:looney:

wasnt this already dealt with after viscant won evo??? i dont see why this needed to be brought up again really. talk about flogging a dead horse…

were getting UMvC3 soon anyway so all this will be completely irrelevant anyway in a few weeks. this thread should be closed i reckon.

Here’s to hoping someone still mains a DP team correctly post-UMvC3 and shows everyone up at the high level play. I still feel that’s how Capcom wanted to design the character, only that their vision became an out of hand, derpy, troll character.

  1. I can’t believe someone made a thread based on the feelings of stream monsters as if it isn’t obvious already most of them are only tournament level when it comes to spectating matches instead of analyzing them.

  2. If no one disliked Viscant, then Viscant wouldn’t be doing shit so let the haters be evidence of his success and stop blowing it out of proportion. Why would/should anyone including Viscant care he’s hated anyway?

  3. If you’re not being hated on, you ain’t doin’ shit. If you’re not being hated on, you ain’t doin’ shit. If you’re not being hated on, you ain’t doin’ shit.

Being a stream monster is pretty silly. It’s obvious the huge majority of them will never become tournament level players, but the random hype they bring is funny and nice at times. They shouldn’t be taken seriously, however–today’s hero is tomorrow’s villain/fraud for a typical stream monster. Expected of this generation of FGC considering the Internets.

I think it’s pretty fucking stupid that we have surefire anti-Phoenix tech:

-Spiderman UWT
-She-Hulk Air Throw Hyper
-Skrull’s command grab
-Characters that are straight up counterpicks (Dorm, Dante, Wesker, etc.)

And people basically refuse to run Anti-Phoenix teams. It’s your own fault for losing to Phoenix if you’re not gonna run anti-Phoenix teams…

Gimmicks can certainly be exceptionally strong, its not mutually exclusive.
