IC: would you buy a homemade vewlix cabinet? how much would you pay?

The advantage to being able to fit astro panels is that there are lots of different types that can be changed out.

So if you put a 3/4/6 button game in the cab, you can have a panel for each and get an authentic feel. As well as having the option of a single or double player panel.

you could do that with mdf panels as well… wouldn’t be too hard… and much cheaper…

I understand some people like the whole arcade authentic feel, so I would be apt to agree with Megaultrasuper… make an option for panel slot or solid…

I’m crafty enough to come up with a solution if they offer a box on the front for a CP…

I think if you followed the other builders like Ericleroi, and that french guy, but with a few simple options as far as color, and LCD mounting, you could have a quality “clone” phenomenon…

Now with options for button layouts like Ecksnine, and other stick builders and keeping in mind people will be doing their own control panel wiring… because we’re cheap jerks… your on your way to a winning design… I’m tempted to take Donovan Meyers sketch up design and change out the monitor housing for a simple stand with a mounting bracket… (of course i’d ditch the 2 TE’s control panel option as well and go for the traditional 2 player set up).

I think in an ideal situation you’d like something…

  • Simple (cheap to reproduce)
  • very little and easy to manage customizations (color, button layout, maybe happ/sanwa stick mounting options)
  • viewlix from the monitor mounting bracket down ? (half cab?)

If a kit like this were available, i wouldnt hesitate to pull the trigger, and get one.
-especially if a local pick up option was available… shipping is nasty.

Here’s what i was thinking of…

Heres the idea i was picturing when you started this thread…

I’ll also post this in an older thread… might help them too…

I actually like the look of this, maybe when I finish my Astro I can start with something similar to this.

Somebody should actually take this idea and do it up, looks very promising.

maybe even something like where u can actually detach a monitor bezel or leave it as is when needed.

pukelix!

1/2 viewlix looks sweet… it would totally fit my needs! :lovin:

thats true. they could be cool

I have an Ikea Desk in front of me called a Jerker that has been discontinued. This would have made a great base as analternative to making a HD cabinet. The desk height is adjustable. This was a great economical desk, too bad Ikea stopped making it. It has all of these adaptors to go o the side. It is a great computer desk in general. I think I only paid about $200 for the base pictured but got about $200 in add ons like swinging side shelves and 1 extra upper shelf. also had an pc tower side mounting attachment. I fit a 32" TV in here at one time. I think if you set it to sit down stool height you could get a 40" in there, but that is too big for the distance. Check craigslist.

This would be perfect! Put me down for one if someone picks up this idea.

keeping an eye on this, but not hoping to much…

I don’t wanna hijack this thread, but I am going to attempt building the half cab Viewlix i posted earlier. If I was to give a run down of the “proper” mass production kit build instructions for something like this I’d do it as follows…

  • Google sketch up - use to explode and modify plans by Donovan Meyers
  • Build the base box first like the others have done, with special attention to the mounting point for the LCD (strength and keeping weight of the LCD in mind).
  • the accent pieces pictured in white would be just bolt ons…
  • the control panel would need some kind of false bottom and opening thru to the base box for wiring.
  • the top panel would need to be the opening point giving access to mounting the pcb/cthulhu
  • Control panel would come as a “custom” layout or a standard 6/8 button “american” style.
  • All peices would be connected with pre-drilled holes for bolts, not screws (ikea taught me expensive crappy lessons) and screws tend to mess up paint work.
  • Research paint and finnishes that could stand up to a little ruff housing.
  • upon shipping, possibly 3 packages (base, accent + LCD mounting arm, and Control panel).

Anyways, I’m just keeping this thread alive a little longer till I can clean up my work room and start my own project… and if your significant other gives you guff over stuff like this, start off with asking to buy an older model sports car and let her talk you down to building a street fighter cabinet… It worked for me

Nice, I’ll keep that in mind:smokin:

Kinda interested in a Vewlix Look a like Kit.

I would buy one.

Actually, somebody build me a sit down vewlix clone right now, I live in SoCal, I can pay

Well, I’ve got my work area cleaned out and my tools are laid out… I’m still in the initial planning of my own cabinet, I am having concerns about the “half cab” design with attention to the arm that would be the mounting point for the LCD.

I’m gonna sit down with a carpenter friend and see if I cant come up with something…

Also considering doing the whole Donovan + French guy cabinet, 2 players for sure.

I, uh, came across a Kodak “Photo Center” Drop-offs in college – this was back when digital camera’s were quite expensive, it was for leaving film to be developed. So, I was staying at a friends loft and we brought it back there. He had a big TV, leaning down, mounted on top of some file cabinet. We hooked up the DC to play some Soul Calibur, and it suddenly struck me to put the Agetec on top of it, and the damn thing was a PERFECT 1P arcade stand. It even had a front panel so you could store consoles inside. The feeling was more “arcade” than the arcade. Long story short, it got weather damaged and I (stupidly) abandoned it.

I’ve searched all over the net for one of these things and have not found a single piece of information. I’d pay 3 or 4 for a replica kit, maybe more. The half-kit everyone seems hot for is in the same ballpark, though.

Any movement on this by chance?

I havent given up hope… but i’ll build mine.

As for the OP, I think they have abandoned it, I’m still working out measurements and stuff for my personal project, but I live with an engineer, and wouldn’t mind making a bit of coin if I can plan, build, and insure quality on a deliverable product. ( I’ve got very little paint experience so far and would want something durable and wouldn’t get easily scuffed at least during shipping)

As for me ?, so far, I’ve ditched the mounting arm idea for an LCD, yea the floating screen would look proper home arcade hot, but if I was building a pack for others it would be a bit proprietary i think.

I have since modified my plans, and will be using a flat top, no mounting arm for TV, and the LCD will sit on top of the back end of the 2 player control panel. This would allow for a universal compatibility with any size TV, or allow it to be used in front of a large projector or something similar.

The idea is still strong with me, and if I were to put something together it wouldn’t be till after the new year, so don’t hold your breath.

But… It doesn’t seem like a serious project, and if mine comes out well enough, I would probably do another and hope I could improve on it. My work area is ready, my measurements are nearly done, so I will start late this week and will open a new thread to track my build.

Oh, and the one I’m working on will be similar to this -

But… will have the Vewlix flair, and the monitor will not be “built in”, plus, the speakers wont be there as well, I’ll use a secondary set up for audio.

*** I abandoned my project, it was too much work and I made too many mistakes, I learned alot of tricks about paint/prime but i’ve got something better comming in oct of this year 2010)

Any developments?
