IC: would you buy a homemade vewlix cabinet? how much would you pay?

I made this post over at arcade otaku a while back as a way of proving that wooden candies can be viable. I think the various designs here might be worth a look.

Of these I think the french vewlix looks best. It’s not exactly like a real vewlix, but looks like it would be very easy to install just about any 32" LCD screen. It looks like the base has a little more storeage area too.

Your right megaultrasuper, that french vewlix clone is amazing, i plan to make one similar in a future

That first picture is ghetto but should be awesome cheap to do. It would be cool to get something like that and anchor down two TE sticks.

I would definitely be interested in something like this. I would also prefer the assembly required kit as well. As for design, I’d rather have something that’s more “cabinet” like. The pic in megaultrasuper’s post (#27) looks like just like a table to me. I’d pay more for something that looked like a vewlix cab.

I think the Lindbergh clone would be great. Of course just one-sided though. The vewlix clones would require a specific type of monitor in order to get a proper fit. The Lindbergh (which has an lcd mount behind the monitor) allows for wider range of LCD monitors.

I second that emotion?

I like the idea of a “universal” LCD mount on a “Half Lindberg” - but with more viewlix style… The Lindberg looks like it was inspired by 1980s Super Computers…

Dont let the dream die!

w/ a built in boombox to boot!

I don’t need all the style of a viewlix… makes everything a bit more of a pain imho…

I could do with a cross between the lindberg and the cardboard box looking thing that was posted earlier…

kind of a cross between looks and functionality…

Good point on the universal mount. A “half” lindberg, with space for two sticks, with some more vewlix styling like Trugoy said, would be great.

Thats the point.

Cool and clean design + easy to asemble/fit/play in = sold

Never thought of something like this…nice!..maybe add like a top shell to cover the tv and a bottom shelf placed well enough to place the system.

i probably wouldn’t put the system if it had doors… 360s don’t like heat and I’ve already had a ps3 go out on me, so I’d keep it outside the box if it had doors…

A cooling fan would be easy to put on the side of the cab if it had a nice big base. I would get one on a low setting so it doesn’t make too much noise.

As for the fan… well you could do something where under the monitor the console would be level and open to the air with the sticks… but the more we deviate from a simple easy to reproduce with minor customizations the more this could cost, and less people might buy it.

Best bet is to

  • build something like a viewlix
  • offer paint color and control panel layout options
(with or without hardware ie sticks and buttons)

and possibly a neutral and well ventilated place for one or more consoles (the Lindbergh has all kinds of room for ventilation).

Considering this would be an empty shell, with a “universal” mount for an lcd monitor or tv, i imagine the painting would be the only thing to slow you down on churning out the flood of orders that should come in… (flood = 10 to 15 at first)

Like I’ve said before… in that movie about baseball in a field of corn… if you build it they will come. -yea that was me doing the creepy whispering…

I’d also think it cool to do an optional control panel that let you drop in 2 TEs (or Hraps, dimensions aren’t that much different on those sticks)…

not sure how much of PITA that would be, but I’d at least make the stock control panel come off so you could swap…

This I wouldn’t want.

It’s much much cheaper to just get a regular astro city or comparable control panel and wire it up. No need to have to swap it in and out.

I’m with lucky. If you can afford to make/build your own arcade cabinet, you can most likely afford a 50$ top panel from LizardLick. As “neat” as swapping in a TE sounds in theory, in practice I think it looks ugly and would needlessly add to the price of the product.

not when you have 2 TEs…

similar to donovan’s cab…

I’m just saying I don’t like that look. I thought that cab was creative and a cool idea, but I don’t think it looks as good as an authentic panel.

Also if I get a cab like this I’m not putting a ps3 or 360 in it, I’m putting the real arcade pcbs in there, so I don’t need the TEs.

You can wire a control panel up to anything, if you have two TEs in there you’re restricted to whatever system they’re for.

this is all true, but I’d have to do a custom control panel as your normal panels don’t have very much elbow room… hence my post above to make it a wider control panel or angled… I know I could have it done, but that means more money…

I also don’t like the two TE stick look.

I would prefer a simple wooden CP. No astro panel. Those panels are about $50 and don’t really add much IMO.

The option between a wooden CP and a CP with an opening for a metal panel should be given though. I don’t think it would make any difference in cost or time.

Damn the PS3 and 360 and their need for excessive ventilation. I don’t really like the idea of just having an open space or fans.

I have run PC and PS2s inside cabinets for a long time and never had any problems. I guess the PS3 and 360 can just sit outside the cab.
