750$ for the kit does seem a little high. I would be interested in just the plans to trace out on the mdf and make my own cuts.
I’d be interested if there’s international shipping rates easily available and there were a few options available:
-
Kit, cut and painted
-
Kit, cut and unpainted (primed)
-
Plans (Trace size/Stick on)
$750 is probably a little on the high side, when for the same price you could buy 4 or 5 TEs or HRAPs.
i’d be tempted to see what it looks like and how much it’d cost to australia too
Around 350/450$ for the kit, cut and primed would be fair, painted kit for 550$ or so will be great
Is just wood man (mdf i presume), i can do a custom vewlix cab for much less…but is a great idea anyway, just need to adjust the price.
Edit: One player smaller cab option would be awesome, something like ericlerois custom cab

you could probably make a “mini” version of the vewlix to save costs. also, i don’t have much room for two full sized single player vewlix but two mini versions would be fine.
That would not be wise for him to give you the master plan. People will start making their own cuts and he is out business in no time.
I was informed that nobody could see my linked images, so here is what I am talking about:

^^^ This right here. That’s what I want. In kit form.
I am talking about a kit like you would buy for an adirondac chair or somehting. He would not be giving me the plans he would be selling the plans.http://www.grizzly.com/products/Adirondack-Chair-Plans/H2158
keep the ideas coming guys. we’re still brainstorming on this on ways to get the cost down.
i really like that half cab idea. that would make it easy to use whatever tv you have hanging around.
I think this is a good example of how the cabinet could be put together, but much scaled down for our purposes.

If I were ordering one I would request that the metal CP be left out. It’s an addtional cost I don’t care about. A wooden CP that has been drilled and routed has the exact same functionality at a fraction of the cost.
I would be willing to pay $250 plus shipping for a half cab with finished MDF, T-molding, and the locks to hold it together. I can supply my own parts and wiring.
Half vewlix cab should be awesome
i’d love something like that for a 1 player panel.
Personally I would make a few changes.
-I would make the CP about half as thick. I have talked to the original builder and he says he has a hard time getting his legs underneath of it. I don’t think this would result in any loss of functionality or strength.
-I would add a hinge to the CP, along with a lock across the top of the panel. This way it would swing up and out and you could access it for maintenance.
-I would add a fold out door underneath the CP, also with a lock. This way you could access the interior to change systems or pcbs. You could alternatively replace this door with a sliding door if you wanted it to be more accessible to other players.
-I would make the entire cab just slightly wider. I’m guessing that one is about 24". I would extend it out to 30" to add a little more room for both players.
If it is going to be a single player machine I think 24" is about perfect. It seems to fit the 29" monitor in the photos perfectly. However, if I were building two of these for VS. play I would reduce the width to about 20" and use 19" or 25" monitors.
If you wanted to use a 32" LCD then I think 30" would work well there too.
If these could be put together with a cam locking system it would be fairly easy to disassemble them and take them to tournaments and gatherings.
I have uploaded the rest of the pictures of the cab here: http://img687.imageshack.us/g/dscf3079.jpg/
You can compare the cab with a other candies in this persons personal arcade.
It is owned by a member of the old killercabs forums named TheRed. I don’t think he would mind these being reposted.
To the OP: Do these suggestions and prices sound reasonable?
megaultrasuper, all i can say is great minds think alike.
i own a new astro city cab, so i’m going to be taking measurements from that to get the cp height and leg room just right.
i’m definitely keeping the overall width to less than 30", this way it will fit through an average doorway easily. i’d also like to do a narrow config for shmups and versus setups.
a piano hinge on the cp for easy access and a front door for game access is a given. i’ll look into cam locks, that might be an option. and the cp would be routed out for sticks and buttons. buying real candy control panels would add a lot of unnecessary cost.
i sent a link to this thread to my friend. i’ll be seeing him later on today so we’ll go over it and see where we stand. thanks for all the suggestions guys, especially you megaultrasuper :china:
This sounds good, I’m going to keep an eye on this thread.
If you could basically make the bottom half mimmick an astro city cab for a few hundred, I’d be in on that.
I would prefer kit form, so we could assemble ourselves.
btw, would you offer local pickup as an option? I may be in Philly early next year.
I’d recommend making the control panel a bit wider than the rest of the cabinet, or make it semi-‘V’ shaped so elbow room isn’t a concern…
I’d love to see a kit like this as I’ve been contemplating making a cab. This would be an easier option for those of use that don’t have the woodworking tools to accomplish the feet…
Yet Ferrari was still able to shut down the company that was making F355 kits for the Fiero.
This kit wasn’t just any old Fiero kit, either–it was made by the guys who designed the Fiero kit for the stunt cars in “The Rock.” The kits made a shitty Fiero look so much like a Ferrari that Ferrari sued the company into oblivion.
That said, I don’t think Taito will care, and the price is too high, as others have pointed out. You can get knockoff Vewlix/Namco HD cabs for less than that shipped.
If the price comes down a lot, it would be a fun project, though. I say go with a kit.
Best of luck to you!

or they can just change the design slightly and there would be no problems.
I want one…
I must admit, I’m effing jealous of people with the skill to build something like this, and those without skill gotta pay for it… I’m willing to get in trouble with my wife and order a cabinet without a monitor or arcade parts, right now. 1 or 2 player.
$750 - Shipped or less for local pick up (east coast ftw)
-Painted (finished)
-User choice of control panel layout ?
-all assembly hardware
-idiot friendly instructions
The ability to put your own controls (MC Cthulhu, specific pcb hack, whatever) would be very appealing, specially if you guys considered custom color options at a slight premium, everyone could get their ideal set up.
I mean, its not hard to cut your own Bezel like guys were doing a few years ago on those lucid style Mame cabinets. An open or minorly user customizable design with an LCD or TV Mounting bracket (universal) might attract more interest.
And i know the Ikea comment was kidding, but something like this should be solid enough to take a couple of big guys mashing out fireballs and uppercuts.
to the OP
MDF and materials arrent too expensive, and the brunt of the work is on the craftsman/carpenter, dont get shorted on your efforts, but I think this is a great product idea.
