Ibuki Q&A Thread: Ask simple questions here!

Ibuki’s kunai vortex is described in the first post, here: http://www.shoryuken.com/forum/index.php?threads/stop-being-a-freebuki-advanced-play-thread.124087/

How are you testing your vortex?

No you don’t have to super jump to vortex.

Just a question, is there any way to recover faster (a cancel, going into another attack) Ibuki’s slide?

I love going under hadoukens and other projectiles, but hate getting punched as soon as they recover.

Also, is there anyway to stop Yun’s crouching punches?
It frustrates me when I get drive kicked, then CROUCH PUNCH CROUCH PUNCH’ed to death.
I’ve tried her overhead, and it just doesn’t reach.

No.

Use EX neckbreaker instead to punish fireballs. Slide is more of a footsie or spacing/positioning tool.

Depends. If you mean midrange, f+LK is Ibuki’s best low counterpoke. If you mean after a dive kick, well, don’t let him get in in the first place.

what do you do after a blocked dive kick? it seems like every option i try gets beaten out

i block i get thrown or command thrown

i try and crouch tech and i get counter hit

i jump i get hit

is there any for sure way out of it or is it just a guessing game?

It’s always a guessing game. If there was a sure way out, then everyone’s pressure game would suck and be useless.

if yun or yang hit you (you block it)with a high dive kick they are always at disadvantage and you can throw them. otherwise, what mingo said.

Im very new to this game ive only had it for like 2 months and havent played any of the other sf games so i hope i dont make myself look to dumb lol. I know lp xx mp xx hp xx spinning kicks or NB is one of her BnBs but i cant ever seem to get close enough to use it( this is against a cpu tho…) when i try and jump in im usually hit out of the air so does that mean i score a knockdown and then jump in hit hit with an areal or cross up? I have a local tournie coming up and i wanna stand somewhat of a chance. I also try doing the lp xx mp xx Low spinning kicks > lp > mk > spinning kicks or NB but the lp after the low spinning kicks never hits idk what im doing wrong is there a certain time u have to hit lp or was i not close enough to start with? Any other tips for playing a good Ibuki are welcome too lol and i hope at least one person can help me out :3.

Seems like you need to learn fighting game mechanics first: Basic Video Tutorial/Guide for Total Beginners for SSF4

When you’re first starting out, you may think everything is random (just like a noob may think MVC3 is just a bunch of button mashing, at first glance). But actually, at the mid-high level, fights are structured. You cannot simply jump at your opponent and hope to land a combo. If your opponent is good and isn’t already pushing buttons, he/she is just going to swat you out of the air like a fly. Instead you need to play footsies, usually at midrange, in order to get in and/or score knockdowns. But even then you still cannot blindly do TC4 (st.LP xx st.MP xx st.HP). Either you have to safe jump, or time your combo (blockstring) as a meaty, meaning you time your attack such that it’s hitting your opponent as soon as they get up. If you go the safe jump route, you have to time your jump in attack such that you can recover in time if your opponent decides to do a reversal. Even then, safe jumps don’t apply to all characters and all situations (ie: it has to be a non-shoto, and you’ll probably want a hard, untechable knockdown).

As far as I know, Ibuki’s TC5 (st.LP xx st.MP xx f+LK) is +2 on hit, according to frame data. Going by this, there is absolutely nothing you can link (or cancel) after that, making it a pretty useless target combo. Unless you mean st.LP xx st.MP xx lk.Tsumuji? In that case: lk.Tsumuji , far.st.LP is a 1frame link. At this point, I would not recommend learning difficult combos like these, unless you are like Sako’s daughter or something. Fundamentals first, execution later.

I dunno what the level of your local tourney scene is, but if you want to stand a chance against even an online flowchart Ken, it may help to read up on the above fighting game mechanics first, as well as the footsies handbook: http://sonichurricane.com/?p=691

If you have no idea wtf I just said, read this as well: http://www.option-select.com/strategy/article/?a=12

It’s a bit of a drag to be reading about video games, but considering the depth of the fighting game genre, it’s better that you learn how things work first, imo.

Thanks a bunch dude i will look into the stuff you said. I dont think im as bad as i was letting on lol. As for that one combo it goes like lp mp then low tsumuji then u hit with a standing lp and then a standing mk then you do a NB or a tsumuji. Ive seen a bunch of Ibukis do it including sako and clanky d. I guess ur right when you say fundementals first execution later cause when i try to learn all the stuff at once it seems like i get worse lol. As for the skill of the people at the tournie i have no clue. This will actually be my first time participating in a tournament and i want to do my best. Well anyways thanks again ur helping me a whole lot :3.

Not to sound like a dick or anything, but I would really advise against playing Ibuki as your first character. I mean, she’s really not a great character to learn fundamentals and stuff with, maybe a shoto or not to sound sexist or anything (assuming you’re a girl and what to play a girl character here, lol) Sakura is pretty cool to learn stuff with.

I think you mean the tsumuji loops, which is similar to this:

Against some characters, Ibuki can link her Lp, then MK, tsumuji/NB like the one demonstrated against abel. If the light punch isn’t coming out during your L.k tsumuji, then it’s because it’s the link. And links require stricter timing. Time the L.p carefully after the Lk. Tsumuji, until you understand the timing when it will hit. (Which Mingo explained, meaining it’s more difficult to pull off in case of a mistake/drop combo and likely to get punished for it. )
If you’re really new to Ibuki, I suggest doing trial mode if say… You want to grasp some basic’s of your own character. If you’re going into a tournament soon, I suggest reading the match-up thread.

Some tips; watch your opponent carefully. There are moves you can do to punish if their character does a bad move, or repeats the same tactics. (Try max punishing to get effective results.) Other then that, follow mingo’s advice for basic fundementals.

It’s true about the fundementals and stuff. Funny that I’m a girl that plays Ibuki still, and I just find that neither of the other girls fighting style appealed to me. I use her during my local tournaments to troll (Jk). I actually have a big tournament next week… So goodluck to me, and making more people respect Ibuki.

LK Tsumuji into st.LP is character specific, spacing specific, and also a 1-frame link.

Not sure why you guys are saying Ibuki is a hard character to use. The idea of learning the fundamentals with Shotos is to learn how to fight them. Using them isn’t going to make combos/tactics easier with Ibuki any faster.

NickBel1022, if you add me on XBL I would run through thing things with you. I’ve found time to set up my 360 again =)

Thanks everyone I got a lot of help out of this thread. Also tbh im actually a guy haha but i do see how there was some confusion. I guess I do sound like a girl from the stuff I type so i guess no harm done.

Makes no difference, didn’t even notice littlesushi thought that.

I can understand what ur saying but im pretty sure its too late to change now im so used to playing as ibuki i may as well learn all the beginner shit as her. Ill admit its prolly not a smart move on my part but tbh i dont care at this point who i use to learn the fundementals with as long as i learn them

I never said Ibuki was a hard character to use, I’m just pointing out that it would be easier to learn the basics with another character. Learning how to control space, applying proper punishment, learning how to look for counter hit setups and etc. Sure this can all be learned with Ibuki, but Ibuki is really a completely different character than anyoen else, no one really plays like her. I don’t know how many people I’ve seen play her that do stupid things like random neck breakers from full screen or just do her Target combo that launches people in the air and repeat like a million times. That’s usually because they don’t know anything about getting in and stuff so they just abuse the one thing that works against scrubs and are content with that.

Learn the game before learning the character.

NVM, sorry. There’s just no way I can set up the 360 again. =( Wish you luck NickBel1022

no problem dude im pretty sure im good on my own at least for now

Add my PSN or XBL or both and I’ll see what you got.

Another question im pretty sure i know what a meaty attack is but im not sure. Also what are some of ibukis meaty attacks?
