Ibuki Critique Thread ver.2

Hi Ibuki SRK,

Welcome to the Critique Thread ver.2. Just post replays of either yourself or another Ibuki not doing too well.

What we talk about:

  1. Match-up knowledge, or lack thereof.
  2. Poor decision making.
  3. When posting a video, also tell us what you think you did wrong. You’ll less mindfucked than you think

What we don’t talk about:

  1. Yun.

Structure guidelines:- these don’t have to be followed, but it’s a good way to kick start your critique.

[details=Spoiler]1: Give a general summary of the obvious weaknesses about yours or another’s Ibuki.

2: Say why something was a bad idea by stating the benefits of another option. For example: instead of punishing a blocked Ultra with cr.MP xx LK Kazegiri, use a more damaging punish with a hard knockdown. Don’t talk about not going for stupidly hard combos for a bit of more damage, or just say “auto-pilot” without elaboration.
[/details]

These steps should help both the persons giving and receiving critique.

:- I think for KawoXD, he’s very good at being patient with putting himself in the corner. In general, he has a lack of knowledge or experience of frame-data, which is making him unaware of when he can or can’t attack. EX Kazegiri being his answer to frame-traps, without meter, he gets overwhelmed readily.

:- KawoXD did a lot of cr.LP mashing in between hit/blockstrings. Which even though it wasn’t punished much in the video, it would be by frame-trap heavy characters such as Cody. He should instead patiently wait until his opponent can no longer frame-trap/attack in range, and look out for walk-up throws. Sometimes, it’s better to take a throw, than to eat a full combo. Either way, Ibuki gets a better knockdown from a frame-trap, than from a throw.

:- Crouching after launchers is a very bad idea haha. He should simply stand to block, or test to see if his opponent is option-selecting to punish a backdash.

:- In my case I missed combos all over the place. [cr.LK, st.LP], [SJC xx U1], [st.MP, st.MP],[st.HK xx SJC], and [HK Kazegiri -> MP Super]… for some reason I pressed HP Super. Not sure why st.LK -> U1 didn’t work… It worked during our other matches but I dunno. I don’t know why TC9 decided to do only one hit, but that Neckbreaker in the first round was meant to be a LP Kunai.

OMG I wish somebody would’ov recorded my matches with Sanford. I really want to know everything I did wrong

----Ibuki 101—
–Learn to Block and get used to it

oh man those hurt to watch lol. i couldnt even get a knockdown on u, and i was dropping combos evvverrryywhherre. thx for the critique tho, got some useful info out of that for sure.

i have a couple replays from the other time we played where i did a bit better, maybe ill upload those and see what else we can get out of them.

btw ur ibuki is so godlike, damn. watching u destroy me gives me inspiration to level up with her.

Ah yeah I wanted to upload your Umegiri ones as well as my st.MP kara-throw pressure, but we played so much the replays got deleted! haha. We should play some Guile vs. Ibuki matches next.

yeah for sure. i have a few replays, ill definitley upload them. and yeah guile vs ibuki would be great practice. sagat would too.

i have the one where i did that KD, hk command dash, hien into super mixup that caught u backdashing, and after that u just basically styled on me for revenge haha. i also have one where i perfected u first round, but then u destroyed me just by trolling lol.

Haha oh yeah, I think I was standing still and reaction Raida, and I think that one with Hien I did the MoTempest combo on you. Don’t worry about those, we’ll have solid games soon.

yeah u raida’ed my neckbreaker, i was like wtf?!? haha. dunno why i was doing a random bare neckbreaker in the first place tho lol. maybe to punish u standing there doing raidas or something, or maybe it was just dumb i cant remember.

Well this is funny. That Ken mod/admin with the Owen Wilson avatar said it was better to combine the video and critique thread. And here we are separating it again.

/thread imo

In all seriousness, another guideline should be
3. When posting a video, also tell us what you think you did wrong. You’re less mindfucked than you think.

I agree it’s not like theres alot of Ibuki players posting videos anyway.

On another note I had a great, long set with Javitz (Probably the 2nd best Balrog in the country). Lots of mind games and footsies:) I’m going to try upload it sometime this week. There was a lot of good matches, so should I post 1 long video or a couple of short ones? Let me know

Separate it by character. Unless it’s like a ft100 with two character specialists, then just keep it one long ass video.

Kawo dropped too many combos. All of his hard knockdowns were from neckbreakers and cancels from random mk and cr.mp pokes. He was never able to gain momentum from the knockdowns either. Put more work into landing your links and work on your simple options for oki until you have something stable to work with.

Izuna, if you are playing someone with such a disparity in skill than you are better off on working on simple/lower damage things. Practice your cr.lk to jab links or something when you open him up instead of your higher damage punishes that you are already comfortable with. It gives him more life to try to block, and more opportunities for you to work on hitting him.

I’d suggest not pressuring at all, except maybe safe jump into (tight) blockstring so you at least build meter like in a real match. This way, you put emphasis on your student (or trainee, I guess?) playing safe and minimizing mistakes, since your primary ways of getting damage on her then would be via punishes and making (good) reads.

And when you punish something, don’t hold back. Ram your foot up her ass each time she does something punishable (like whiff dp). If you simply punish with a slap on the wrist (like backthrow or something) then they will never learn.

Go for less damaging combos with Ibuki? cr.LK, st.LP, st.MK into special does a ton. KawoXD dropping combos doesn’t bother me, since he can get better execution by playing any fighting game really.

Anyway as for giving him more life, that’s why I want to do Ibuki vs. Guile next. I always start with Ibuki mirrors because it proves to them I’m a good player myself, and to give them some inspiration. If they’re really bad all I pick is Makoto 'cause I’m having fun, haha.

I really suck at pressuring and baiting and stuff, but execution-wise, I’m pretty good. If only I could learn lol. I would like to go against you Izuna :smiley:

185dmg is a ton?

Fixed.

lol just kidding.

lol That’s hilarious.

185 is a ton though in an Ibuki mirror.

@TheOnlyLite:
Sorry I lagged out! That match was full of lag-full execution errors from your part, so I’ll be sure to let you run it back later. It wasn’t embarrassing at all. The 2nd and 3rd rounds only happened like that because I spent the entire first testing which normals you liked to use. You obviously wasn’t expecting me the Raida you like that. Besides, perfects from Okizeme doesn’t really mean much, happens to me sometimes too.

@Damascus
Sorry as well! I managed to get in a Ryu match with you before it went crappy. The last 2 I think were okay, but I don’t know if that was with the Ryu guy you invited or not. I do have some critique though, do you want the replays to be uploaded? Did you notice me doing almost full screen Raida?

That Ryu player unfortunately got way too happy with his rushdown from the first round, and never switched it up even for the next match. At the end he got beat by a tripple Unblockable, so he should start resetting himself from it. I don’t know why he’s using MP Shoryuken to escape the Vortex, but bless him getting hit by the Anti-air SJC mix-up. Damn he’s played a lot of games though, 12000 on XBL?! – I could do a proper critique for him if he wants.

I’m happy st.LK -> Yoroitoshi is still working haha.

Here are four matches:

Izuna [Ibuki] vs. Damascus [Ibuki] – (0:00 -> 2:40)
Critique[details=Spoiler]The Ibuki Mirror shows that Damascus is unfamiliar with how to escape Ibuki’s Okizeme. This also means that he’s isn’t aware of the various punishes that would happen. After throwing a Kunai, Damascus will always automatically follow up with a st.Jab, regardless of whether or not the Kunai hits.

[0:39] At the end of the first round, Damascus holds up-back which resets him. This was good because he realised that a j.Short alone would not finish him off. He goes for a risky jump-in and gets a lucky set-up, however misses throwing the Kunai. The error of this round was using Ibuki’s slide (Sazan) at the wrong ranges, which put him in frame-disadvantage.

[0:59] Immediately at the start of the second round, Damascus takes the risk to jump-forward and throw a Kunai. The reason behind this was to beat my Anti-air, but instead of gaining a small amount of frame-advantage, he gets countered with a full combo which starts Okizeme. Getting out of the Okizeme thanks to an execution error from his opponent, he holds up-back again, and when he lands he goes for a cr.Forward.

Ibuki’s cr.Forward is not Special Cancel-able, and isn’t linkable unless counter-hit or meaty.

[1:10] Once again escapes the Vortex due to my poor choice of combo, [details=Spoiler]st.MP, st.MP does not link on Ibuki after a meaty Kunai.[/details]Damascus uses EX Kunai despite me having nearly full health. Now on a huge life and meter disadvantage, Damascus takes the risk to mash cr.Roundhouse in the middle of frame-traps.

Ibuki’s cr.Roundhouse cancels into itself and ends with a launcher reset which pushes her opponent to the other side of the screen. Also having a start-up of 6-frames, it is unsafe on hit unless High Jump cancelled from into Short Tsumuji, which is -4 on block.

[2:00] Damascus is lucky to survive after I use the wrong Kasumi Suzaku which would have taken the round. Unfamiliar with when the Super Combo ends, he tries to do a wake-up EX Neckbreaker to punish, but instead is counter-hit. Damascus didn’t realise that I was way too low to the ground to be punished even if the Kunai had stopped on the moment of his wake-up. However, the biggest mistake was continuing to mash EX Neckbreaker long after the Reversal window, which lead him to get punished.

[2:15] Not realising that I was pretty much standing still, he goes for a slide which is whiff punished by a Raida. After which I go for a High Jump cancel Yoroitoshi to chip, and not only do I mess it up, Damascus fails to punish the blocked Raida and goes for yet another pointless cr.Forward. The rest of the round is just me fishing for a st.Short block-stun because by this point I’m very aware that he is mashing some sort of normal after everything.[/details]

Izuna [Ryu] vs. Damascus [Ibuki] – (2:40 -> 5:36)
Critique[details=Spoiler]
Izuna [Ryu] vs. Damascus [Ibuki] – (2:40 -> 5:36)
Critique[details=Spoiler]Immediately in this match, Damascus correctly counter-pokes a normal and using the slide to get past a few Hadouken, but uses cr.Forward again. He could have used st.Forward or cr.Roundhouse to start Ibuki’s Vortex.

[2:58] After doing a j.Short, he gets hit by a Shoryuken because it does not start a block-string.

Ibuki’s j.Short will cause frame-advantage on block, but will leave a window of time for an invincible counter in between. When jumping in for block-stun, it is better to cancel the j.Short into j.Forward, or use a different air normal completely.

[3:03] Again, Damascus goes for the j.Short and tried to follow up with a cr.Jab. This happens one more time but I thought he was doing it to bait me, but instead goes for it yet again.

[4:00] Huge poor decision here. Damascus has a life-lead, and goes for a jump-forward Kunai. Ryu’s MP Shoryuken is his go-to Anti-air, and would pass through the Kunai anyway. This is a very unnecessary risk.

[4:07] Again with the j.Short into cr.Jab, however he is coutnered different this time.

[4:47] Finally he baits a Shoryuken, but after a knockdown I reset myself. Damascus went for Neckbreaker -> cr.Strong -> j.Short. Once again, j.Short can’t continue a block-string, and by this point Ryu has a enough meter for Shoryuken FADC.

[5:00] haha. Anyway, after setting up the Unblockable set-up, I reset myself again from the Okizeme.

[5:12] Big mistake here. In an attempt to mix me up, Damascus puts himself in the corner. The rest of the round is me fishing for Short Tatsumaki into Shinkuu Hadouken.[/details]
[/details]

Izuna [Ibuki] vs. Redoutch [Ryu] – (5:36 -> finish) -> Basically: I made a lot of execution errors, and he didn’t adapt after winning the first round. Nothing more to it.

P.S. This post is now complete!!!

Just updating this thread by saying that KawoXD still has an Umegiri, and he has no problems zoning. He gave my Guile a very hard time (I think he beat me like 3-2 or something, maybe 4-2), and held up pretty well against my Makoto.

I’m going to go ahead and try get some clean games of Ryu vs. Ibuki and piece together what he’s missing. His Okizeme can use a little work, but I wasn’t confident with blocking it so I rinsed focus/backdash.

Bonus vid (nothing to do with Ibuki):
