Just because one is a fan of the game since 19xx doesn’t mean they fully understand it. Look at all the stupid ass threads that we see with regards to SF4. I been playing SF since the arcades so I am not a noob but how to I srk on a arcade stick?!?!?!?!
Same goes with VF. You got individuals who say they know all about the game but in reality, they don’t understand the mechanics. It is a valid argument.
This. People are in denial. I never touched VF competitively until VF4. But then when VF4 came out I joined VFDC, #vfhome, paid my way to EVO twice during the VF4:EVO era, and played thousands of matches.
But now we have these nobodies claiming that they’ve been playing SF2, or VF, or whatever series since 199X and that they are just as ‘hardcore’ as people who have been active in the community for years.
Before VF5 it was Dead or Alive 4. I remember when I was apart
of the DOA4 community and there was a bunch of fuss
in the community when WCG switched to VF5.
That was of course when DOA4 was still barely alive.
Now its a lot more Dead than Alive.
At least VF5 fans have something to look forward to, although
were currently 3 versions behind Japan (Ver. D, Revolution, Revolution Ver. B)
Another thing is that a lot of these new people that pick up say they “played” SFII back in the day…but what it really means is that they button mashed on a cabinent and/or brought Champion Edition for genesis but didn’t really understand it.
lol This is WCG we are talking about here. They are doing tournaments in cellphone games and in whatever crap the sponsors want them to do. They probably didn’t consider “depth” and “balance” when they chose VF5. This thread is not about love/hate for VF.
The thread opener is just wondering why did they go with VF5 when it doesn’t have all the other qualities one would expect to be considered especially for a event like WCG:
Not popular even compared to other fighting games.
Not as appealing to viewers because most people have to know the game well to enjoy playing/watching it.
I don’t see why they didn’t just pick Tekken instead. I mean, I like VF as much as the next guy, but there isn’t much of a player base in North America. There’s like maybe half a dozen guys who can even be considered high level.
Did I ever, even once, say I was aiming to be a top VF player? Nope.
Did I ever, even once, bash VF? Nope.
Did I ever bash VF on this thread? Nope.
Did I ever bash VF on this forum? Nope. Sega, yes, VF, never.
All I did was call you out on your comment, which I called elitist. It had nothing to do with your skill, or my skill, or the depth of VF.
In fact, all you’re doing right now is continuously proving that I was right, because basically you’re saying that I am lying about my like for VF, because you assume that I’m not old-school VFDC, thus, it is impossible for me to enjoy the game and learn it?
…and besides, how exactly am I supposed to go to a VF event that people from VFDC hold? I live in ASIA. But I guess that means I’m rubbish, because us players that live in Asia don’t have any “major” fighting game gatherings like EVO or WCG, or those gatherings at Plague’s house, which I can’t afford to attend, because this “kid” has slightly more important priorities… like a mortgage, a wife, and a daughter.
Anyways, WCG is hosting VF5 because sponsors say so. It’s all politics and has nothing to do with balance, depth, popularity, etc.
The most popular fighting game series, taking the ENTIRE world into account, not just America and Japan, is probably King of Fighters. I sometimes get the impression that everyone but America plays that game: Mexico, Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, Brazil, and probably a bunch of other scenes I don’t know about.
As many other people have said, they pick their games because of their sponsors. Their sponsors include Samsung (owner of a korean Starcraft, Warcraft 3, Counterstrike, and Dungeon & Fighter team), and Microsoft.
The tournament is a joke and run horribly at all levels and in all games
end of story
This was the answer I was looking for thank you. So in conclusion, “Influence” by “Networking”. I guess it’s a little bit of everything. Capcom has an influence. Evo staff has an influence. Players have an influence. If all ingredients are just right at the right time, things will turn out good.
I just have a dream about maybe one day a Fighting game would become as big as Starcraft in Korea. But it would seem only to be a dream right now.
Dude calm down. I have an account on vf.com since 00, yet when I play newer younger guys who started with VF4evo I lose. Don’t judge a guy by his join date.
Back to back fadc ultra, back to back guess parry/low forward supers, back to back bound combos that last 5 minutes, back to back fireball zoning, back to back D mashing, back to back never shutting the fuck up about how your trash fighting game is better than some other trash fighting game
