Here, listen to the official WCG theme song, ‘Beyond The Game’, to better understand the level of competition that only Sega’s Virtua Fighter 5 on the Microsoft Xbox 360 console can provide.
You and I, We have met before
Through the magic of a moment in Cyberspace
Driven by a passion to win
Playin’ heart to heart, face to face
The challenge of a life time
Stands before us now
Beyond the game
In the shadow of the golden gate
(ver2 ; through a portal into cyberspace)
We have come to decide our fate
We’re here to celebrate
Beyond the game
Beyond the game
At last the moments at hand
All we need is to believe we can
We’ll make our stand
Beyond the game! (beyond the game!)
Beyond the game! (beyond the game!)
Beyond the game! (beyond the game!)
The world cyber games!
The teams are here, the spirit is right
We’re connected now in a powerful way
We celebrate our diversity
Around the world with a passion to play
The planet will be watching
The message will be heard
They would rather take a superior game in terms of depth and balance, such as VF5, than an inferior title, such as SFIV or T6BR, though those are more popular. If you have to ask the question “why is VF5 the official fighting game of the WCG?” then obviously you are unfamiliar with the Virtua Fighter series and should hold back before commenting.
Do you think Counter Strike is more popular than Halo, or Modern Warfare 2, or Killzone or whatever? No. It wasn’t chosen for popularity, it was chosen for other reasons, competitiveness, balance, pace, whatever. I know you want SFIV or 3S to be chosen over VF because those are your games. But if WCG was a popularity contest then the official fighting game wouldn’t even be a Street Fighter…it would be Smash Brothers.
I love how in your rush to create this thread you didn’t even proofread the title. You must have done quite a bit of research and made sure that you understood the issue before posting this thread. I mean surely you asked the people at VFDC who work with organizers of the WCG why the title of VF5 was chosen rather than create a flamebait thread? Right?
I think it has to also do with the fees involved. VF5 is technical, older, and a more established game at this point… It also isn’t that popular. This means less money to expend for WCG.
Fighters aren’t their main attraction anyways. Merely a side show.
I really like the way the fighting game community is right now. Insiders run our tournaments. Tournament organizers have an intimate relationship with the community, and when they mess up they can’t escape the criticism.
E-sports is a movement pioneered by dipshits. Watch that little diddy BEYOND THE GAME if you are still in doubt. To me, staying separate from those fucks is a success, and I feel bad for the VF5 community.
This right here is why people don’t like the VF community. Elitism and disrespect for other games or their communities.
I love VF as much as anyone who knows fighters (I’ve mained Akira for more than what… 14 years? Since VF1), but I wouldn’t be making comments like that, especially if WCG drops VF5 next year, and replaces it with SSF4 or T6BR.
i feel bad for them too… they can’t push their scene at all. Who give a shit about WCG VF5. It’s not enough to get people to play it that’s for sure. I think VF5 and also the new version are great but whats the point of learning them if you can’t get anyone to play them with you? They just don’t have an appeal to many people who will blindly follow Tekken, or SF4, or whatever else. Plus not having a planned future console release of the new VF5 REALLLY hurt. I signed the petition as well btw.
I know some WCG execs as I have worked for them at some of their events. This is what they told me. WCG really like the game and the community.
Before VF5 they had DOA5 as their fighting game. At that time it was the exclusive fighting game on X360. When VF5 came out for X360 they decided to pick it and dump DOA5.
Right after the World Final last year WCG put up a poll to see which fighting game they should showcase for next year. The choices were DOA5, SC4, SF4 and VF5. I don’t know who won the poll but they obviously picked VF again this year.
Its too early to say which fighting game if any will be showcased for next year. They didn’t have any console shooters this year as official games. They did have Gears at the US Final but its not an official world game. They have run an Halo:ODST side tourney in New York last month.
Don’t fell bad for the VF community. We need all the support we can get and WCG has been good to us.
WCG first contacted me through virtuafighter.com as I am a moderator there. They asked me and other moderators questions on how the game is and how to run tournaments for it.
I also helped them promote, coordinate and judge in their Fighter Club event last May. There are rumors they plan to have another one in the near future and they said they will get in contact with me for feedback.
You did notice that WCG only picks their fighters from the X360 pool, right? (I even just checked the website, and it doesn’t have PS3 listed, just X360). Automatically disqualifying T5DR for no other reason other than it being on the PS3.
That’s kinda screwed up. :xeye:
@Glory: I only see people making fun of Smash and DoA… whistles
