It sucks that Capcom doesn’t seem to be able to get things right the first time. They’ll release “updated” versions of a game like NG and fix some things that weren’t right, but also “fix” things that were pretty good.
Overall, I like the 3s OST the best because it sounds more like “real” music that you might hear at a club or something than just video game music. Not all of it, but most of it. “Killing Moon” (Akuma’s stage) is a favorite. That piece is just haunting and beautiful and it makes me pick his stage most of the time when I’m fighting because it’s got a great vibe to it.
I definitely agree with the people saying the backgrounds were better in NG and 2I though. I like most of the backgrounds in 3s but they don’t seem to match the art style of the characters. You have these backgrounds that look like they’ve been “digitized” against these cartoony characters. Plus, I liked the way some of the backgrounds changed in NG and 2I. They should have kept more of the backgrounds from the previous games instead of having characters do so much sharing like they do in 3s.
> And i think SI’s top tier is more interesting then 3S’s making a more interesting game
wut
And yes, NG/2I has much better backgrounds that 3S. I can’t comment on the music, because to this day I still don’t remember any music from NG/2I, even though I have it on emulator! I at least remember more tracks from 3S, but I don’t really like any of them except for Dudley and Q (and Elena). I think NG/2I had slightly better sound effects, though 3S’s own are good too.
However, 3S voices are definitely the best. Okay, Alex’s isn’t as charming as before and Hugo mysteriously can’t count past 1, but otherwise, the 3S voices are better.
BTW, I have to concur with NG/2I having a better feel than 3S. That’s probably because NG/2I have traditional hitboxes, while 3S does not.
Maybe that’s what is is…the hit boxes in 3S are mapped directly from the character art or something right? As in they were much more accurate this time around? Maybe that’s why some combos are easier in SI. Oh well.
NG and 2I both have tracks that just rock. In NG Dudley’s Theme (Leave Alone) is the best in the game in my opinion it’s just better than the 2I version. 2I has the best character select theme and Yang’s version of Crowded Street (Midnight) is some shit that stay in the MP3 player. Ken’s Funky Bay, Elena’s Townboy, Gill’s Nile Theme, and Sean’s San Paulo Theme all are great pieces of music. But 3rd Strike hooked me with that Hip Hop flavor and there isn’t a single track I wouldn’t bump. But 3 overall had great music and everybody has a theme they just gravitate to and bump on the regular.
I thought so too. Also, I liked Alex, Ryu/Ken and Dudley’s themes more in NG rather than in 2I. Ibuki’s as well. Although to be fair, Dudley’s theme in 2I doesn’t sound too different.
I like a lot of the backgrounds from NG and 2I… but I gotta say 3S’ music rules over past versions. I wish 3rd Strike was like Tekken 5/6 where they keep in the different stages from the old version of the game.
Was there really any need for this thread?
Most people with eyes and ears think 2i pisses all over 3s in terms of presentation
3s has some of the worst music i’ve ever heard, makato necro elena gouki dudley
I can see how people can like some aspects of SI over 3S, I don’t really feel that way for the most part though, the only thing I hate about 3S is the balance, everything else is almost perfect, especially the fresh, less gamey music (that’s enough midi thanks) and the lack of engrish and/or horrific accents in the voices. (AGIS REFRECTA! AT EEZ LUZRAH!)
I even love the cleaner, spaced out stages too, they feel less like stereotypical fighting game levels and there’s a welcome more modern feel to their design, like in Yun’s area where you’re on an actual stage and the people assisting are just a blur in the distance instead of these dopey, “funny” characters all up in your grill, haha check it out we can afford to have moving sprites in the background w00t!!, everything is a bit more realistic including some of the noises, either that or they have this late 90s grungy feel that feels so right, god i love the 3s parry/tech noise.
There is a distinct feel of moving forward with 3s that NG and SI didn’t quite have, still relying on tacky visuals and the same old gamey HIDEKI OKUGAWA synths, SI is still good for a spin but I can’t help but laugh&cry whenever Alex says something or the african guy from elena’s stage with cds for earrings loses his balance.
I do miss Yang’s stage though with smashing the shit out of those giant statues to piss off the caretaker. :annoy: But then I can just play SI for a bit.
3S’s soundtrack is just as MIDI as any other CPS3 or CPS2 game. It’s just that it has heavy use of sampled drum loops, chords and phrases rather than individual one-shot instrument samples.
I call that one “Emulator II Shakuhachi on the Rampage”.
I don’t know why Capcom didn’t just make a proper SF3 compilation for the PS2 like they did with the Alpha and Darkstalkers games instead of just 3rd Strike. Its not like 3rd Strike was a recent game when they did the PS2 port.
3rd Strike is still cool though, but it has something of an “assembled” feel compared to the first two SF3 games. New Generation and 2nd Impact had a bit more style to them, especially with the winning screen showing one character victorious over another. Don’t know why they took that out.
After revisiting both NG and 2I, I’ve concluded that NG is by far the best in terms of presentation. I must have spent less time with 2I than I realize, because I don’t remember it as clearly as I thought I did. It was a small step down.
I remember distinctly being disappointed with 3S when it first came out, mostly related to the stuff that’s been discussed in this thread. The efforts at giving the game an audiovisual makeover just seem lazy and slapdash.
Probably because they would have had to draw more of them featuring the characters that weren’t in NG or 2I.
There’s no doubt that the gamey music has its own value and charm, but let’s be real here. 3S is a tournament game. When it’s on the big screen at SBO with that beastly sound system and the crowd getting into every hit, I want to feel like I’m at a club about to get beat up by black people. 3S accomplishes that.
If SF3 had any nostalgic value then 2I music being more SF-like would matter. But it has always been its own series with its own fanbase. NG/2I at SBO would be too funny with those Adam West Batman hit noises and gamey tunes.
I know I’m saying you would think that NG would have the worst style because they had to spend time getting the gameplay right and working the system perfectly and all that jazz that by the time they got to 3S they could really go bonkers with the presentation cause all the quirks are ironed out for the most part. Instead 3S has the laziest presentation of all3 games.
