I Got Next | A Documentary on the Fighting Game Scene

LOL. Had good rep but was neg rep’d for my post above. I said I liked this documentary to the pussy who gave me that neg rep.

Oh yes there are!

I before E expect after C but guess what they are exceptions!

^^
this.

Right now just feels like a big promotion/commercial for the fighting game scene, which can still be fine, but I myself was hoping a bit more pathos, like what little I saw from bang the machine. What makes these players tick? What do they really have to lose if they get peaced out at tournament they drove six hours/flew five hours to the other coast for? All i really get from this cut was hype surrounding final round. I didn’t see much drama there. If and whenever you get your evo footage, I hope you capture, the rivalries, the trash talk, the DRAMA, a major tourney can bring.

Still, Good shit on going out of your way to capture a side of video games the mainstream doesn’t see, and for actually REALEASING your doc wide, unlike bang :bluu:. And I gotta say, those bracket special effects were awesome. We gotta see some more stuff like that!

Really enjoyed the documentary. Laughed my ass off when I saw fatherbrain during the Final Round footage, sporting his Gief mohawk.

This was great except that it was a slide show for me, and I have really fast internet…I guess too many users viewing.

I am really looking forward to the full version and I can’t wait to DL this version and watch it properly.

Ian, I enjoyed the short cut of the documentary and I’ll definitely be spreading the word and movie to everyone and anyone who’s willing to watch it. That being said, I definitely agree with some of the above criticisms.

I know it’s really easy to criticize, but we all want the movie to do well and help make SF more mainstream, so please take what we write in a positive light.

It feels like the movie kind of lacks a consistent rhythm or flow. It doesn’t feel like there’s any momentum going from one act to the other (The 3 acts of the movie being player intros, 1st tournament, 2nd tournament). I think it’s cause it’s hard to get a sense of how much time has passed. I don’t think the dates on the bottom of the screen are enough to convey to a casual viewer that “Hey! This is a another tournament. This is another chance for East coast to win or for West Coast to continue to dominate!” Besides the fact that time has passed, you wouldn’t know that it’s another tournament unless you’re really paying attention to the setting of the tournament.

Joe’s personality really came out in this documentary, mostly because there were a lot of scenes of people playing off Joe. From the guy talking about how Joe is his rival, to Joe’s Dad, to Joe’s story about the picture frame, all those personal moments help make his story seem more important and epic, which Mike Ross, Justin, and Gootecks’ stories seemed to lack. I know that this is more of a man power problem though, since it’s really hard for you to find the time and money to get the footage you need to flesh out the other main characters.

Oh, and we talked about this before, but some magic needs to be done on the audio. As someone who’s gradualy worked his way up from the on board mic to an external mic to a shotgun mic on a boom pole, I know your pains of trying to salvage audio from great footage. Do what you can man and if you have to, subtitle the parts you know sound really bad.

I know it’s easier said than done, but Robert Rodriguez said something like “Solve problems with creativity, not money.”

Damn for a short version, that was great. Cant wait for the full version of it

Is there a torrent for the HD release yet? I saw the beginning for the short cut on ufrag.tv and the creator mentioned a torrent being released soon… so… where it at?

Someone get this man a translator at Evo!

I give major props to Ian for giving this thing for free back to the community. Overall, its a great project. It is a little rough, I think the intro should be more hype like the trailer. I want to hear more cool music.

Anyone who sticks their head out like Gootecks in media, will end up getting bashed by certain members of the scene…people who are afraid of change (aren’t we all?), how our game will be flooded with even more flowchart ken’s and ryu’s when “everyone” knows about the scene.

I think it’s a good thing, we can’t just live on the glory of 10 years past,

Gootecks needs to stop hogging the camera and start leveling up his Balrog =/

I missed it… When will it be on again or how can I watch it?

Looks pretty cool.

You can still stream the whole thing on UFrag.

Just viewed the re-stream and I’m surprised that the Denjin SBO qualifier footage was already in there. Good shit, Ian!

lmfao

i liked the doc, captured tournament hype very well, great job!

i caught the live stream and i thought it was a good effort but I agree with the people that are saying it needs more focus and more personality. it’s probably hard to craft any sort of storyline when evo hasn’t taken place but it would have been nice if the movie got more in depth with the players. like maybe it could highlight different aspects like maybe show gootecks grinding to build those business relationships, justin wong doing what he does to be the best and deal with that pressure, the stress that tournament organizers go through with tournaments and maybe a day in the life of the boss, mike ross. but for a student project with very limited resources this was impressive so good job and thank you for the documentary.

right here: http://ufragtv.com/show/i-got-next-movie-premiere.

at the video description "If you can’t catch the premiere live, you’ll be able to download it later for free from the I Got Next site. "

Subtitles and some more editing explaining the time/transition between the tourneys would help understanding.

Great movie by the way, registering the early tourneys of the american SF4 scene.

Maybe I missed it while watching, but what were they trying to talk Joe into doing?

^Move to West Coast. I hope Joe doesn’t, East Coast can’t afford to lose their best Sagat player.
