I dont like new players going right into god tier teams

It’s nothing wrong with playing non god tier or top tier. However, this isn’t VF5, where you can play just anybody and expect to win. You either play with characters that have high potential or throw in a god tier. That, or have some really good gimmicks.

I Kinda agree with MadTitan on some things. I play Gambit, since I played him for 4 year in MvC1, so when I beat someone with him (playing a god tier team), it feels great. I also know Gambit sucks ass in comparison to the best in Marvel, that’s why I use him with characters that are better on point and can help gambit out. This way I’ll have a better chance in winning and I play the character I like.

As far as god tiers not being fun? Mag-fucking-NETO is hella fun. I pretty much play with anybody, well as long as they have potential. The Gods(and the tops like Doom and IM) are fun(to me) because you can do SOOO much with them.

Since you play Hulk, why not give him better tools to win? It’s nothing wrong with throwing in a god tier or a top tier to even the odds a bit. Maybe add in a good assist for him. This game is pretty fucking broken, but it’s team based, so you have a lot option to play with to make hulk a better point character.

This thread is actually getting better to read. Its very funny.

Madtitan, if you really want to scrub out an MSP, pick Megaman / Anti-air / anti-air. Hold up-back and press FP+assist right before you land, repeat over and over.

Being just another guy who won evo with MSP or Santhrax alone WOULD make someone a legend.

edited. drunken nonsense

Honestly I was stating my opinion and I don’t really care if you don’t like it or agree… none of it would have gone out of the ballpark like it did but beats seems really good at getting under my skin. To all and anyone who is offended by stuff I posted when I lost my temper… I’m sorry.

The team I listed spiral/hulk/juggs… is not a standard team for me… more of something I do against msp… using hulk and juggs assist to push em back and tempt them to action that can be punished with spiral knives… im well aware that most teams need solid AAA… spiral… not as much because teleport is generally a better reaction to jump ins… (just to offer the explanation… its my chaos team… not an out skilling you team.)

2 wins a night? c’mon… i got like a 70 - 80% win ratio… and Im well aware of the fact that it is nothing special… and others are far better… but I stand proud of what I do get…

Someone suggested I compared myself or my team to vdo? Where did you read that? I never even posted MY team in this thread. Just A team. In terms of vdo… I used him as an example to something I was talking about in terms of character choice philosophy… (the point of this thread.) Pretty sure I even restated clarification on that somewhere.

Basicly I get so sick of the elitist nature of some people around here… and eventually it pushes me over the line. Don’t any single one of you pretend that you don’t lose you damn temper once in awhile. I dunno if you show up the next day to apologize… but thats what I’m doing now.

And I did listen to what a lot of people said… I do hear in spite of anger overtaking me at times… I dusted off my sent… gave in and put together my old spiral/hulk/sent team… played it all night and lost only once. It felt like 6 years ago… but I was able to compete… keep my own flavor… and not stand belligerently on my low tiers.

I had fun no matter using a god tier or not… and thats something i’ve been to bitter to do for a long time. If nothing else beats… thanx for the knock down drag out on here last night… and I’m sorry that I kicked for the pills the moment you got involved… it was a dick move… I did reread a lot of what you said and in spite of not agreeing with all of it… I can find no fault that should have led to my harsh and overly defensive reaction.

Drama done… everyone can go back to mahvel and not expect me to be bitterly lurking around waiting to strike on their thread.

I do have anger issues… prolly why I love hulk.hehe

Um i was jk as this thread shouldn’t be that serious imo. I thought the LOL in front would denote that. I know you’re not the same person, internet sarcasm is hard to detect.

oh my bad. i been drinkin. it wasnt really aggressive anyways. we cool son. you from m.d right?

People on this website normally, or used to, be of the mindset of trying compete on the highest level. That doesn’t mean justin wong, that just means competing with the top finishers (lets just say top 10 @ a big tournament).

Low-tier is fun, and a lot more fun to lose with than god tier. It can actually be frustrating at times if you try and win against a good player’s god tier team. The people who are respected for using low tier normally have won with them in major tournaments. I dont mean first place, but I do mean money matches against a well known player, top 10 finishes, or placing. It’s only fun to see low tier when they are used to their full potential (or close).

It is not becoming to hear somebody that hasn’t put the time or effort in to at least trying to become competitive on the tournament scene whine and complain about how unfair the god tier is. And about how much more respect there is in winning with low tier against god tier than vice versa.

The god tier is, in general, harder to play with than low tier. The payoff tends to be much better. For example, magneto’s infinite to 40 hits (consistently) is harder to do in tournament than almost any low tier combo is. Most low tier’s hardest thing to do (combo-wise) is consistently getting the timing down for their instant overheads, or timing on strict dhc’s.

Point is, execution wise, god tier is more demanding than low tier
(imo). Where low tier lacks is mobility, which puts them at a disadvantage when it comes to gameplay strategies (blocking, pushblocking, counter calling assists, baiting assists, assist punishing, avoiding assists, and much more).

Gameplay strategies are very dependent upon how good you are as a player AND who you are playing against (their level). This is why it is hard to respect most people’s opinions on low tier. If you just play low tier to play low tier, and have never had any success with them (on a competitive level), then it is hard to respect an unfounded opinion. It is easier to respect people’s opinions if they have played against somebody that can use high level strats against low tier to test and see if it actually works. Shoult, for example, has mixup (who is a top player) to play with, so his views on low tier are valid because they train with low tier, play low vs high, discuss, revise, and do a multitude of other things that people that just play with low tier to play with low tier DO NOT DO.

If you never care to compete in tournaments, that is cool; please dont come to shoryuken and think that people that have been playing marvel for a long time competitively can take your opinions too serious, or get offended if they dont. It’s the nature of the beast. Although marvel’s thread section has deteriorated GREATLY, there are some mahvel heads that still can’t stand to see bullshit posted.

This is just my point of view about low tiers crap, sorry for the long post.

I must bow to your wisdom 50… the way you put it was perfect. I understand why players of a certain level will not easily respect the opinion of unknowns… it does make perfect sense… …I still feel like many of them do carry an elitist outlook and may be very swift to shoot down newcomers, but after fielding probably dozens of low tier rant posts like mine and others in this thread over the years. I legitimately cannot blame them.

Yep in bmore…

About unknowns never winning, didn’t RowTron come out of nowhere and start wrecking?

that’s not the same thing that was being talked about…random people winning nationals because of how “cheap” top tier is.

what you’re talking about is not at all related. even then, I’m sure he was known in his own scene.

Someone confirm whether or not he was kept a secret! LOL

What are yall talking about? Rowtron been on the scene so long it isn’t funny. I mean, to my knowledge, he doesn’t really play mvc2 hardcore anymore, doesn’t mean he still doesn’t play.

The closest thing to what yall are talking about is White Knight from puerto rico. Now he came out of nowhere and sent fear into marvel’s best around…i dont know, 2004’ish? I even saw an interview where justin wong said either himself, rowtron, or white knight would win evolution more than likely. I heard white knight wasn’t used to the controllers/joysticks they used at evo that year (it was still on arcade) and got put out fairly early. but anybody who played him on console knew the deal. i played him when he came to georgia for final round a couple days before the tournament, and he blew my freaking mind. he was the first to be doing storm tri jump infinites, he was the first i ever saw play storm/sent/aa. i mean he was just nasty. spyro, his homie, was good as hell too, but not on wk’s level.

He’s never won evo either. Granted, he’s been a stones throw away more than once.

yup, though I didn’t mention that part as it didn’t really matter

my homie jeff boone got 5th one year @ FR. It was his first national tournament and I expected him to do well. I played with the guy like 2 1\2 years before I finally got him to go to a national. There are monsters every where, sometimes they just don’t feel like moving.

I was talking about way back then when he showed up out of nowhere in 2001 and wrecked the West Coast, then proceeded to place 2nd at EVO2K2. But yeah, if it’s unrelated, then it’s unrelated. I was just curious about that…

All I have to say is if you think this game is easy to get to a competitive level at, you are definitely not at a competitive level. It’s like those guys that look at people playing in the arcade and go like, “hey, they’re just mashing buttons.” They just have no idea, and neither do you. You can watch every single video on Preppy’s site, read every FAQ, peruse these forums with a magnifying glass, and you still won’t be able to even HANG (i.e. not get OCV’ed) with veterans of this game who have been playing top level competition. The more you learn about this game, the more you will realize you don’t know. I’ve been playing this for about two years, and I just barely started to be able to not get destroyed by other people. And I still can’t execute everything in this game (mostly have problems with sentinel :S) And two years is relatively quick…I know people that have been playing this game since release, and still suck.

The depth in this game comes from the complexity of the mind games, which come from how well you understand the engine. Whoever can think on a deeper level has the edge in a match. It took me a week to learn how to ROM with magneto. It took me the better part of year to learn how to land it and use it as a tool. The same people win EVO for Marvel every year…heck, most of them are ‘retired’ and don’t even play anymore. How are they so good? It’s because they play quality competition (themselves) and are so far ahead of the rest of the pack that they can just play casually and still win.

I think I remember reading somewhere that you can’t just play people to get good…you need a solid group of people to study the game with, so you can learn matchups together and discuss. There’s so much information that is not available on the internet its not even funny. You can learn what a match typically looks like by watching videos, but you won’t understand the reasoning or motivation behind individual player actions without some serious exposure to top level play. It’s just not obvious.

And honestly, if you think you can get good at low tier without playing the top tier and at least understanding why the top tier are the best, I think you’re in for a rude awakening. Most guys I know that have good low tier teams have solid fundamentals from playing top tier teams. There are just some things you won’t learn by playing low tier teams because the characters simply aren’t capable of it. All fighting games revolve around matchups, right? How do you win the matchup if you don’t know how the matchup works?

But if you’re not playing to win…what are you playing competitively for then?

I was talking about the year it was Justin vs Row evo finals years ago, obviously Row is no “secret” now lol. I thought I have read somewhere that west coast was keeping Row vids offline so east coast wouldn’t know about him. However I have no idea the validity of this, hence why I asked someone to confirm or deny. But I def agree that there probably are good players everywhere that have been playing for a while that no one has heard of.
