Take it up with every seeded tournament ever.
I’m the main organizer of PU2011, and the final decision on the Top 8 bracket was solely mine. At the time, what I wanted to do was to save the best matches for later in the Top 8 bracket; the same reasoning that goes into seeding players in pool play, where you separate the top players so that they, ideally, don’t play each other until Winner’s Finals.
In retrospect, this was a very bad judgment call on my part and no one else is at fault. I had no intent to help any player get ahead or cheat in any way. I approached Top 8 as I would approach any other bracket, but the fact is that my inexperience caused me to choose an inappropriate method. I deeply apologize for how this reflects on all the people who helped me at PU2011, and of course I apologize to EVO and to all the players.
I would also like to apologize for the rules misunderstanding in the MvC3 3v3. The rules state that Winner’s and Loser’s Finals are both 2/3 sets. Grand Finals is 3/5. Due to a lack of communication from myself to Devildigimon, the bracket runner in charge of the MvC3 3v3, he went forward with 3/5 sets for Winner’s and Loser’s Finals. Again, this is not Devildigimon/Webster’s fault, but my own.
Lastly, I would like to apologize to Nash from Cleveland. I heard today that you had been disqualified from Vampire Savior because your match with Justin Wong had been on hold for nearly three hours. Why you would be disqualified just for waiting on your opponent, I do not know. It may not mean much, but I am fully prepared to refund you your entry fee for VS. Please private message me.
Again, I regret what happened in all of these instances, and hindsight is 20/20.
For those that enjoyed PU2011, I thank you and invite you to attend next year. As myself and my team learn more we will continually provide a better and better event for the community.
I think it’s because you’re black, Noel.
Top 8 does not equal early rounds.
Changing brackets towards the end of the tournament does not equal seeding.
Noel killed my father.
Anyway, i believe Noel on this one. People just sort of jumped to conclusions. Look at the videos that “Fight” posted. They will shed some light on a lot of things.
My apologies Noel.
I don’t disagree.
That post was directed at this stuff:
I think you’re hollow.lmao.I still love all you guys though.Just upsets me that my name is being tossed in there just because im at the event.Osirun, can you please tell these people once and for all that i had nothing to do with running any pools, teams or tournaments what so ever at PU2011 so this way ppl can get off my case!If anything,I was the one that came up to you saying that the winner of pool 1 should play pool 2 then 3 should play 4 because thats the order of the bracket.
Thanks Wizard.
Is this the same Noel Brown that attacked Eric “Smoothviper” from behind at a tournament and knocked him out?
This whole changing bracket thing is wrong but I think people won’t stop doing it. A lot of people pretending to stand against it in order to maintain their image/authority/reputation are actually guilty themselves but I’m not going to involve myself in your business by putting all of you on blast. It’s your choice. On one hand you screw over the legit players that are not well-known, on the other hand you support the players that create the matches that create the fan-base to support your events. Obviously catering to popular players is more beneficial to tournament organizers and therefore they continue to do so and just create an “apology” when they get called out on it.
Even if you did it innocently, the alleged players probably knew what they are doing was wrong in a legit tournament and were abusing the situation.
Just so my post doesn’t get lost in the shuffle:

If anyone should know better it’s a seasoned tourney vet like J. Wong. Which makes it all the worse since it really undermines the entire scene. The simple fact that he would even ask for the brackets to be changed is outrageous.
Noel, I think your name being mentioned was a mistake and pretty much everyone knows you weren’t involved. However I think it is a combination of your notoriety and the fact that everything you post is fucking incomprehensible that’s causing you issues here. Anyone who can read understands you weren’t involved in this.
EDIT: Also don’t discount that it will be played off like “well I only mentioned that I didn’t want to play him then they up and changed the brackets and there was nothing I could do OH WELL”
Exactly.
I am surprised Justin didn’t stand against the discussion due to his affiliation with both EG and Nexon. Members of an organization should be more cautious how they act because in the end the organization is judged by its members, even if you carry a disclaimer stating that all of your actions are your own responsibility and are in no way a reflection of the organizations you are affiliated with.
I think “Blame Noel Day” should be a national holiday. o_O
But seriously, I think things like these are wrong (especially in Top 8) but the situation seems clear now and the proper apologies made. Now it’s up to the big guys at EVO to decide how to proceed and to make sure that nothing similar occurs in the future, for the community’s sake.
when tournaments have a big prize pool or seeding @ EVO, it should ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS be random bracket and every man for himself. Its that simple.
If its PR ROG vs Wong first game in the first bracket, too fucking bad. That’s the luck of the draw.
For the small casual tournaments held by 2-3 cities and its around 20 people, yea go ahead and float it ONLY for the initial brackets. Everyone is there to play new blood and enjoy the competition. There is a difference between major tournaments and casual tournaments. Major tournaments need a competitive standard but I doubt that will EVER happen.

This is how it unseeded tournaments should work. When people manipulate brackets, it ruins the spirit of competition.
You know, a long time ago I made this post about how seeding in tournaments was nonsense, and that not randomizing the brackets meant you were rigging shit in the first place since you were treating “top” players in a more special manner than the rest of the players and…people kinda shrugged it off. Final Round did that for last year’s Final Round, said fuck it and people went around saying this was sooo great because apparently tournaments are for the matches you see on stream and not for competing. Randomize the fucking brackets and let it ride. Does it suck to play people you know? yes. If all goes well in a tournament, would you still end up playing your friends? yes.
The rest of the players, stop thinking of yourself as lesser than the people on TV, you are there to win not to bitch about who you are playing.
yeah like no one is blaming you absolutely it has to do with the players who have been around forever and knew what they were doing. i’m sure powerup was a blast but unfortunately my first responsibility has and will always be my local scene
Yeah it feels like Justin is already being groomed for the “hapless victim” role here.
We can approach this logically. We know Justin asked for the brackets to be changed, this is a fact. From this fact we can infer that Justin knew he had the clout to get the brackets changed. Why else would you ask for something like this if you were taking a shot in the dark? We can also infer that Justin doesn’t have an issue with the brackets being changed if he personally agrees with the change.
This would have been a big deal if Justin even ASKED, however that his request was fulfilled with little resistance or question is what makes this pretty fucking outrageous.
Getting rid of regional seeding would fuck over the random pot monsters just as much if not more than the top players. I drive a long way out to these events with two local friends and it would suck for any of us to have to play each other early. I’d honestly rather be stomped by JWong (which happened at PowerUp, lol) than have to play them.
And all of you blaming Noel for some MvC3 team tournament snafu don’t know shit. None of the staff members seemed to be on the same page when it came to knowing how the team tournament was supposed to be run. Every time I asked a different organizer what the rules were I got a different answer, and after 2 or 3 different answers I tracked down Osirun to tell him that he should probably clear things up for everyone. Tons of matches in the first round or two were done incorrectly, mine included. I don’t blame Noel at all for asking for some clarity and a final decision from the TO when it came to the finals.
