I can't believe what I just saw. (Shady Tournament Stuff)

This was for evo points, so it does matter. The excuse that everyone has been doing it for a long time does not make it okay, it means they have BEEN DOING SOMETHING WRONG FOR A LONG TIME.

Isn’t it part of standard tournament rules that you are not allowed to be in collusion with another player aka rigging matches? Throwing a match, is collusion… Because you are letting them freaking win, you are rigging a match.

Man this community seems so corrupt, im new, i had no idea things were like this, im questioning what the point would even be in going to a tournament if the end result is that other players will get preference over me, if it isn’t balanced what fair chance do i even have?

Actually, you very clearly do not understand what happened at all. Every match in that tournament before winner’s/loser’s finals was 1 set. Or at least, that’s what was supposed to happen. The staff member I asked told my team to play every individual match-up in our first round as a 2 of 3 game but play only 1 set. And some of the other teams were told to play only 1 match-up per player but play 2 of 3 sets. Every single staff member I asked about the rules told me something different. After 2 different answers I consulted Osirun to make sure. He told me to play best 2 of 3 sets for every match (which was not the case according to the written rules that I checked after the tournament was over). I checked with other staff again a little bit later to make sure and was again told something different, that each match was supposed to be 1 game per player, 1 set. I then went immediately back to Osirun and told him that I didn’t want to be a bother but that he should probably put everyone on the same page before things get worse. I can’t tell you what the teams involved in loser’s finals did or did not agree to, but taking all of this into consideration, I am not at all surprised at the confusion that ensued.

Considering that registration was open until very shortly before each tournament began, saying that players simply should have consulted the website for the rules is also a little silly. They should have been very visible and very clear at the event itself.

Phoenix on point and wasn’t he using Super-Skrull, a character that the commentators were saying he doesn’t even know how to use?

So if a player decides he doesn’t want to put in the effort to win, he’s doing something wrong? There’s nothing wrong with throwing a game unless someone payed you to do it, which was the problem Brawl had at MLG. Justin didn’t care enough to win, not that big of a deal at all.

I understand your POV, but you have to realize that your post is more idealistic than realistic.

People are going to attempt to do what they think they can do to win. As a TO, you can’t ignore that. You have to set and define your guidelines explicitly. That’s your responsibility as a TO. If your tournament gets bigger, it’s time to find some minions you can trust to help you TO. If there are holes in your rules/guidelines, people are going to attempt to take advantage of them. These are tournament players you’re dealing with. Can’t blame them. They do what they can to win.

I agree that everyone, including players should have a good sense of fairness and/or morality but again, realistically, you can’t guarantee faith in each and every player that walks into your venue. Let’s be honest here.

Communicate, address problems, reinforce solutions, and understand that if you choose to run your own tournament, you inherit the responsibility and flow of control.

What you’re missing is that when situations like these occur, the community very quickly loses faith in that tournament. You’d be surprised sometimes as to how quickly those seats will empty. Especially at the local level. Just sayin’.

People in top 8 playing like they don’t care, or intentionally throwing their matches for friends, isn’t a good look for the community at all, imo.

And again, should we look down upon players who use nonviable charecters, or have overly flashy playstyles? Both in practice are the same thing as just not putting in full effort.

Shut up, troll.

Ahem…Justin? Did you just brag about how humble you are?Am I the only person who finds that funny?

But this was Top 8, with MONEY and EVO points on the line, if this was WNF (which to me is more about the communtity than money) its fine, but for cash and evo points? thats nonsense. Also, “There’s nothing wrong with throwing a game”, dude what?

“Justin didn’t care enough to win”?, Justin came on here to verify he is not an asshole but you just made it seem like it again, nice job

Andre,

I gave you your entry fee back from my own pocket because I felt terrible about what happened.

Min misreported Yeti’s match (as a win instead of a loss) in the first round and I stepped in to handle the rest of the pool, and I ran most of the bracket under the assumption that it was correct. When I figured out what happened (because yeti said “why did you call me for a match? i’ve already lost twice”) I talked to Min and we came to the conclusion that running back all the matches that were affected by this mistake was the most fair option.

I’m sorry that this ended up making you lose to Derrick, but you shouldn’t have played yeti in the first place to get to where you were. If Derrick played Yeti and won, we would have made Derrick play Michaelangelo again without question after realizing the mistake.

Syxx: The reason it happened to Andre was because it was from Andre’s side of the Bracket. No matches in the winner’s bracket on PR Rog’s side were affected at all. It was only the top half of the bracket, and most of the top half of the loser’s bracket (except for where Derrick went after he lost, which was like the middle I think. I don’t have the bracket on hand but I can show you what I mean later.

We should look down on players who don’t take top-level competition seriously, yes.

I know it’s idealistic, but that’s what competitors should adhere to. Osirun should by no means receive most of the blame here when he was the first to man up and explained what happened from his end with transparency. A PowerUp2012 shouldn’t be affected by this when Osirun vowed to do things properly and learn from the mistakes made. If his events were affected, then this thread would have achieved nothing.

I agree that it’s impossible to guarantee every player should have a good sense of fairness. At the same time though, it becomes a community wide issue when this is bluntly portrayed as representative of the fighting game community by its very top players. That’s where everyone loses: existing players get sick of this shit and move on, people new to the scene dismiss the FGC as a joke, etc. This could happen in ANY tournament. If anything, the slip-ups from Osirun and the live stream provided by TS helped show people’s true colors, and that is a big deal.

So if Justin doesn’t care enough about the game he’s playing to go for the money, then he’s committing a moral sin?? You are greatly overreacting and caring far too much about what people do with themselves. Him not putting his full effort into the matches doesn’t even have any negative repercussions for anyone except for him and people who throw a pussy fit over nothing because of it.

It’s not even like he walked directly into attacks, he was just goofing around entirely, picking characters he didn’t know how to use, and almost won with them. What if Justin is hiding things he wants to save for Evo? Should we criticize every time someone doesn’t play at their full effort? The reason professional athletes get critized for this behavior is because they are on a pay check, there is no reason for us to be complaining about someone not doing everything they can to win in this situation.

Thanks for backing us up fruityryu. Keep in mind that this is only the 2nd PowerUp, and we definitely have learned from these mistakes and I can honestly say that they will never happen again. I will never float a person in our tournaments again. I was against the idea from the beginning, and I only said a brief “i don’t care who justin plays all the time, we shouldn’t change the brackets” before I went back to running marvel pools.

The reason Justin got floated is simply because Osirun is too nice, and wanted to be accommodating. I know that doesn’t change anything but it wasn’t done with malicious intent to any player.

Regarding the team tournament mixup, we should have gotten more eyes on it. Webster wasn’t aware of the rules, and I wasn’t aware of the 2/3 or 3/5 problem until after it had already gotten played out.

Next year we will have a staff meeting to align with everyone about the rules for all tourneys as well as certain situations such as floating which shouldn’t ever happen.

Glad i didn’t attend this craptastic tournament.

Justin you’re a piece of work son.

@sixfortyfive Rules Umm, but the rules are right here, and say 2/3? Or am i seriously missing something? Honest question im not being sarcastic.

Split pots (which I assume is the reason Justin threw the match to Noel) happen all the time, it’s pretty bullshit but only Evo seems to care about it since they’re the only tournament that has a rule against it. That said you’d think Evo would be vigilant in enforcing rules for its qualifiers… I guess it remains to be seen what comes of this.

The UK scene isn’t as bad for this as the USA is.

People get mad at competitors slacking off or throwing matches because it fucks with the integrity of the competition. People who are invested in the outcomes of these events don’t want to see that kind of nonsense. That goes for players as well as spectators. As I told Noel, if there was no collusion (which I still kind of doubt), I would be salty as hell that my competitor wasn’t taking me as seriously as I was him.
