You can buffer lk axe kick off cr.mk as a poke because you’re only gonna hit if they get counterpoked. I have always been using hk tatsu but lk tatsu would be more damage instead of 2 hit hk tatsu. So maybe I’ll switch it up.
People not going for mk axe kick combos off the divekick mixup make me sad :(. The damage difference is HUGE between cr.lp x2 cr.mp xx lk tatsu -> hp srk and cl.mp xx mk axe kick cr.mp xx lk tatsu hp srk. That combo is the biggest reason anyone would want to play Evil Ryu as far as I can tell. Like I said in the combo thread, cl.mp xx mk axe kick is a true blockstring. cl.mp is also a 3 frame move so it’s as likely to combo off the divekick as a jab.
I like Rice eater’s setup of letting them drop after the lk tatsu and doing a divekick now that I’ve seen it in action.
If you look closely at my inputs, you’ll see that I literally plink almost every thing I could possibly plink. Even just a simple cr. MK, I’ll plink it. But my execution is still ass, my timing is just not good enough for me to risk it. Man I really wish his st. fierce was a 4 frame move like Akuma’s, because hitting that link is a piece of cake compared to Evil Ryu’s, for me anyways.

I’ve experimented with skipping the jabs and just going straight to stand MP into MK axe kick. My problem is still the same as above, my execution sucks. I can’t even hit the 2 frame jab link consistently enough to attempt it because the timing is long and awkward. It’s something that I will continue to work on and hopefully sometime in the near future, I will feel comfortably enough to attempt the link all or most of the time.
As for what drew me to the character, besides the fact that I’ve been a fan of the character for a while it was his cool look. This was before anybody even knew he had the axe kick let alone the combo is he is now known for.
I actually always plink everything too, even outside combos. I think it’s a great habit in this game. Similar to always inputting throw tech when doing a meaty cr.lk.
For the axe kick combo, I hit the link by hitting mp, lp, and then lk. I’m not even specifically trying to plink. I’m just trying to cover more frames to make it consistent. It gives me 3 chances to hit the link. If I hit mp early I might get lp or lk, but I don’t care because they all continue the combo.
I’ll try it again, but the first time I saw you post cl.mp xx mk axe kick is a true block string, I tried it in training mode and was able to mash out a dp. Cl.mp xx lk axe kick was a true block string, though.
edit: Must have been canceling it a frame late or something. It’s is a true block string.

You dont use your meter for anything outside of combos. its like you save it to do something youve been practicing in training, like with that fadc to ex ax kick at the end of a combo. Like saving to be flashy. You had numerous opportunities vs the Ken to do ex axe on your block strings during pressure. Big one was in the corner int he second vid. You had him and could have came over head with an ex axe, but did the same set pattern with the mk axe hoping to go into the combo you know. Even an fadc on a mk and tick throw for grounding int he corner would have been good mix up to the same repeated block string. He jumped out and you got him into another block string midscreen, yet still no ex for an overhead or any deviation from the set block string. Work on mixing in an ex axe if they are blocking yoru strings since everyone blocks low for the axe and never react to the overhead. Once grounded, eryu has some nice options from lk tatsu, lk tatsu crossup on the untechable down (just spin over him and back over and it will connect for nice gimmick to use once in a while or to mess with charge characters) to meaty dive kicks or what have you.
Your combo execution was amazing though. Rare to see many eryu hitting that mk axe, c.mp link with such consistency. try working on some combo deviations though and mixup and using meter when opportunities arise isntead of hoarding for flashy combos you may or may not be able to hit confirm into.

No im not being flashy its my way getting in for my damage,thats the way i play with him xD but u got right with the ex axe kick didnt use it so much then but ive improved abit
Edit: I did the fadc ex axe kick cause i wanted techniqal knockdown for mix ups burned that meter cause i had i great life lead for that but i dropped the combo when i jumped in -__- that became my death…
I am relatively new to E.Ryu (Dudley player at heart) but I stumbled upon this when I was training and could not find anything online about it.

I didnt mean it as never do that combo or that was a bad decision at the time. It was in relation to saving all that meter in every round of every video posted. It felt like you were saving the meter for the combo since you never used it for mix ups. Its a good combo and the untechable knockdown when you have the meter is definitely worth it on top of the stuna nd dmg it dishes out. Im also not saying blow all meter on ex axe kicks either if you get that impression. It was good to do that combo when you had the opportunity, no doubt, just felt like you had better opportunities earlier to use the meter is all I meant. Good stuff though. Still quite impressed with the execution. I get srk’d out of that link all the time online.
