Hype as defined by this thread is something that is distinctly American. Only here do you have shit talking at tournaments on all levels. Everyone should be used to it by now so even those who are annoyed by it should be able to ignore it.
Are you just basing this on videos you’ve seen? Because that seems pretty retarded, and even with all the trash talking, most people will still come up and shake your hand at the end of the day.
The only community I’ve seen take trash talking a little too far is the Marvel community, but it’s such a big part of that scene that I couldn’t really picture it without it.
This is like people who complain about battle attitude in breakdancing. You’re not there to be friends, you’re there to compete. Long as there’s no physical contact, and you’re not insulting somebody’s dead mama or something, it’s fine.
Most of posts here are only focusing on the negative hype. Everyone should remember that hype doesn’t necessarily mean trash talking in a malicious way. I think this thread is losing it’s definition ;(
ALso this thread degenerated into join date battles. Bravo.

thats what every thread becomes
get use to it
I’m trying to take your damn money, not be your friend.
gimme da loot softee
hypppeeeeeeee
fuck, even jwong gets hype. Some new school players are to pussy
I’m sure that the KOF players from mexico\south america talk shit to each other so its not uniquely american.
I agree. I love watching tourney matches and going like OOH and getting all excited, but I think the douchebaggery should be kept to a minimum. That’s just me tho.
Hey I re-canted that a few posts later. Hype is fine, in fact Heartnana hit it spot on.
Hype is instrumental in the Street Fighter scene, be it positive suspense as you sit on the edge of your seat watching two titans duke it out, or ‘negative’, which really isn’t so negative, where you try to get into your opponents head via trashtalk, or vice versa.
Trash talk is a serious part of any competitive game. Except maybe Golf.
TL;DR: If you can’t handle the hype, go play Golf.
Maybe I didn’t make it clear enough that I’m not sure exactly what falls under the category of “hype” - and it probably means different things to different people.
And I will also admit that money matches are a bit of a different story. Any time you are placing a wad of green on any sort of one-on-one competitive sport, winning by any means necessary has to be expected. Then again, some people would apply that to tournaments, but I think that any time someone wins a tournament game because he verbally scares/annoys his opponent into submission has just achieved a very hollow victory.
Gotta take the good with the bad sometimes. It’s annoying but you can’t really tell somebody how to behave though. Look on the bright side though, without trash talking and crazy hype fest we’d never have gotten “MANGO SENTINEL!!!” so there you go.
Talking shit is more prevalent in America because hip-hop culture promotes talking shit and acting like a douche.
Different kinds of people and environments.
Some people like “hype” and others actually might complain and start crying.
Yipes is godlike and “hype” can make moments epic.
Hype is just the way Americans get excited while playing the game. The Japanese and Europeans have their owns ways to get excited while playing the game that is outside of hyping themselves up. There is nothing right or wrong about the way each individual community gets themselves excited to play the game. It seems that the new posters may be confusing hype with bad etiquette which is a woefully misunderstood concept.
Sounds like you just don’t like hop-hop…
I would tend to agree. I also agree that it’s different when money’s on the line. Also, I think alot of people can’t see the difference between not liking over-the-top trash talking, and not being able to handle it. I’ve been under pressure alot in my life. I’ve been talked shit to even more. I can more than handle it, I’m not gonna run away crying, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.
Trash talking is fine. However, there are good and bad trash talking.
Good trash talking, which is the kind that should be encouraged, is inventive and funny, it makes everyone laugh at your opponent and it helps you get in his head. That stuff is all in good fun. The “Go back to Marvel” line mentioned earlier is a good example.
Unfortunately, a lot of people are just plain stupid, so their idea of trash talk is to call their opponent a “fucking faggot bitch”. This would be the bad kind of trash talk. Not only are they plain offensive and liable to get themselves punched in the mouth, they make themselves, and by extension, everyone else in the community, look like a bunch of idiot douchebag children.
The difference is basically the individuals ability to communicate intelligently with his surroundings. There is no way to make stupid people less stupid I’m afraid, so the bad kind of trash talk is something we’re stuck with.
In any case, if you see it, shake your head and ignore it. If you’re subjected to it, say something witty in return and make him look like the idiot he is. Either way, just gotta deal with it.
I don’t think you understand the point of trash talking. The point is to get into your opponents head by any means. If he’s thinking about punching you, he’s not paying attention to the fight. There is no good or bad trash talking.
If you let any trash talk bother you, chances are you might lose but hey, some people play better the more shit you talk to them.
It can be fuel or fire.
Now that just sounds like plain playing dirty to me.
Using an influence outside the game to try and gain an advantage in it just isn’t cricket imo.
" OUTSIDE FACTORS " are a huge part of the competitive scene. Those outside factors can make or break rounds or even matches. Its a legitimate tactic.
If you’re up against a top player in your game, some players get intimidated. Thats an outside factor. I gotta go up against xxx for my first match?!
Maybe you showed up to a tournament a day early and you get casuals in with some unknown players and you get stomped. That could plague you if you happen to come across that guy in tournament play. “damn, he wopped up on me earlier.” Another outside factor
Even small shit sleeping and eating are factors. Can’t tell you how many games I’ve lost because I was sleepy or to hungry to focus properly.
“outside factors” are all over the place in the scene. Its just some of the factors are more manipulable than others. Some players take advantage of the outside factors though. Duc do likes to play when he has an empty stomach for w\e reason. And I actually look fwd to playing top players in the games I play.
