"Hype" at arcades/tournaments in Japan?

I doubt there is a crapload of trash talk in Japan. If you listen to some of Gootecks earlier podcast with Pyrolee and Fubarduck, they speak about the community in Japan. Japan is more of a community in the fact that they understand the game and not players. It would be kind of pointless anyway to talk shit in Japan. You can probably go and say you’re better than XYZ player, but since the player base evolve so much over in Japan, you’ll probably eat your words. Japan is one of those communities where at any given time anyone can lose. Daigo was ranked number 1 in Japan based on BP ranking, and who won the Japan nationals? Oh Iyo did. Anything can happen over there, so shit talk really would do no good.

In America shit talk is effective because we don’t see each other often. Our tournies are spread out, you’re lucky if you live in a place with Monthlies. In Atlanta we’re starting weeklies. But still, overall the point stands. There are shitload of tournies everywhere in Japan. A lot are recorded and put on blogs. It’s a tough world over there. In America, we can get away with some bullshit at a local tourney, and we have a month or two to gloat about it. Victories in America are worth about a month or two of shit talking and boasting oneself up. For example, at Final Round, Justin Wong started talking a lot of shit to Mike Ross. He obviously will say he’s better than Mike Ross. It’s not like a week after Final Round they play each other again, and Mike Ross proves him wrong. Rather, it will probably be at the Gamestop finals where Mike Ross can get his revenge.

Regional rivalries, intra scene rivarlies, etc are persistent in America for several reasons. Demographics are spread out. NY is a 13 hours drive from Atlanta. Cali might as well be on the other side of the world from NYC. Our scenes are isolated because we are far from each other. In Japan, or Tokyo, it’s probably as easy as jumping on a trains and visiting the arcade of the guy talking shit. Gootecks can’t just get on a plane and be in NYC because Jwong was talking shit about him. Yeah I know there is online play and all that good shit, but that really doesn’t amount to shit at the end of the day.

Shit talk is rampant at tournies. It can be pretty fun, and it’s pretty nice to represent your region, coast, or city. Locally it’s fun to represent your crew. However shit talk can get out of hand. There is a lot of ego attached to gaming.

Why is this in the SF4 forum? This has exactly nothing to do with SF4 specifically. General Fighting Game discussion with this stuff.

I don’t mind hype in the slightest, that makes it interesting. What I mind is being an asshole, trash talking, making it into something personal.
Getting hyped, yelling, all that stuff is cool, but the second you start jumping down the guys throat (unless if he initiated it, depending n the circumstances) calling him a “faggot”, making dumbass personal comments, it gets out of line. And no, I haven’t been to a major tournament, though I’d like to, and yes I’m an 09 member as you can see. I don’t think I need to have gone to any tournaments to be able to tell when someone is simply acting like a moronic little child. The qualifications for being an asshole don’t really change the second you touch the joystick. Say all you want, but getting downright hateful while playing a game, whether it be SF, Football, basketball, etc is a childish waste of time. It doesn’t make you look like a man. The opposite actually.

Yeah, because thinking it childish to yell something like “I GOT YOU FAGGOT” means someone’s pussy. No one here is complaining about how it makes them cry when someone isn’t nice to them, they’re trying to differentiate between “hype” and being an asshole. I don’t have to be some sissy to simply realize when someone’s being an asshole for no good reason. Though if it makes you feel cool to talk about people who just happened to join a video game forum later than you as if they were cretins, go right ahead.

I use to believe that pro gaming was filled with egotistical elitist wankers, but once I actually started taking an interest in the scene I realised there was lot more to it then just dick waving contests

There is a lot people pushing the positive parts of the game and the community but it doesn’t seem to interest people as much as the trash, so they tend to think of trash talk as being more important then it is

Of course. No one here is saying that everyone at tournaments acts like an asshole, just that there’s a difference between “hype” and, well, being an asshole.

I was hella hype at the last tournament I went, and no one got their feelings hurt…plus I was pretty drunk so it was pretty fun supporting my crew…REPPIN MY SET!!! as it were.

The commentators and some players yelling out the classic ‘aye, aye, aye’ bring the hype. It just doesn’t seem like it’s the hateful and trash talking type of hype we get here sometimes.

NSFW due to language.

All of you shut the fuck up.

Cool.

Most of the people posting have never even been to, experienced or even walked by a tournament. It’s a different feeling when you are there. Trash talk/hype/whatever you want to call comes natural when playing the games. It makes them more exciting, more clutch, more personal…etc.

And besides, all the trash talking and hyping is just the competitive spirit in us coming out. Nothing wrong with that. Before and after the match a lot of us are the nicest people you’ll ever meet. But once that game turns on, it’s all about winning or if you are a spectator it’s all about wanting your favorite player to win. If you take any of it personal then you are dumb for doing so.

If you don’t like it. Leave.

Man your own jackhammer. Man your battlestations.

I think the trash talking is just silly TBH and as well as setting yourself up to look bad if you lose it’s also rather off putting for newer players, they don’t know if you are apparently nice outside the game, all they see is someone running their mouth off like some kind of thug.

I go to the RanBats we have here in the UK quite frequently and the there’s barely any trash talk. If there is it’s the civil kind and nothing hateful. Once the match is over most of the guys talk like they’ve been friends since kindergarten even if they just met.

Its part of the competitive fighting spirit to show a bit of pride now and then. There’s noting wrong with that… so people claiming there should be ‘no trash-talk’ i suggest should play something less competitive. As far as nothing crude or unnecessary is said trash talk remains a fundamental part of any fighting game IMO.

Meh the only problem i have with ths hype is …somebdoy could get hurt.

I love trash talking against people I know pretty well. I don’t make it a habbit to trash talk everybody, because people have different ways of reacting to it. I wouldn’t trash talk to somebody I just met, but after a few games, and a few times chilling with the people, if I know they are alright with the trash talk, I do it. It is all fun in the end, and we are all friends at the end of the day…

I watched some Tekken vids recently (can’t remember if it was 5:DR or 6) with some Jack player at a tournament. Someone in the crowd just kept shouting all through his matches. Stuff like “Oh oh oh oh he’s a fucking robot!” and “Boom! Rocket punch.”

Was funny I thought.

Anyone know of these vids as I’d like to see them again, but can’t find them on youtube anymore?

Like any other sport or spectator event there’s a balance between good sportsmanship and passion. Ideally you’d like everyone to be a good sport and you want everyone to be passionate. Within reason, both can sometimes coexist. But they also work against each other.

Since I think everyone can agree we need both, just accept that it will fall somewhere in the middle, it won’t always be perfect and take the good with the bad.

It is? Could of sworn I was controlling actual people with super deformed bodies shooting blue/purple/red fire balls from their hands and defying gravity at every turn. Dang…this changes everything!

Nothing wrong with anything you just said. I can’t speak for others, but I only have a problem when someone tries to make something personal. Hype is great, without it alot of competitive events would be alot less fun.
