just come in with a decent jumpin attack and you will generally stuff out everything besides EX
Staying in a random Endless lobby is like a 0-10 matchup for me. People either kick me because I get slaughtered, or they quit because they don’t feel like getting “scrubbed out” by Hugo. #thestruggle
Hugo might have some really shitty matchups but goddamn is he fun.
We should start up some sessions on Xbox & PSN since almost here everybody has a secondary character. I’m on PSN for now. I’m going to be on sometime on Sunday and I’m on East Coast. Let me know what’s up.
I just picked up Hugo a couple of days ago; I must say I’m having a blast! I was playing Sim before, think I’m gonna stick with the big guy from now on.
If they do a late jump in, EX SPD should catch them (4 frame start-up, + invincibility = can’t be safe jumped)
If they do an early jump in, EX BB will catch them.
And, then there’s also the EX Lariat cancels…
On paper, a Hugo with 1 bar should be difficult to jump at on wakeup. Of course, easier said than done in reality…
So, is Hugo worse than Gief in this? I’m a PC player and I’ve yet to dip my toes into this.
I can’t speak to a comparison with gief exactly, but I am pretty confident when I say that Hugo is, at worst, “perfectly serviceable.” He’s got the kind of difficult matchups you’d expect a big grappler to have, but he’s got good tools for various situations, and tends to at least stand some kind of a chance with smart play.
Also he hits like a freight train. And he’s pretty fun if you’re into “hulking monstrosity” type characters.
Hugo needs a TagTeampartner; then he couse havoc. Simply learn a 2nd Charakter i do fine with Double H Hugo/Hakan are pretty awsome together
Yes, Hugo is a worse grappler than Gief, without question. When a character’s fastest attack is 5 frames and has enough recovery to be level 2 focusable, there’s no way they’re not going to have serious problems.
The only reason Hugo stands any chance in a match is one of two things. His damage and his st.HP. If his st.HP is useful in a matchup, it is VERY useful. Outside of throw ranges for example it can pretty much shut down a good half of Rufus’ options. Other characters can have a similarly hard time dealing with Hugo’s st.HP. These are what I’d say are Hugo’s better matchups.
When a character is perfectly content to stay away from Hugo for the entire round however and has a low recovery projectile… well, you only need to play these matches to know how exquisitely painful they are. At least Zangief has counterpoke greenhand. At least Zangief has decent normals that advance him forward. At least Zangief has st.MP. At least Zangief has truly invulnerable reversals. Nobody bullies Zangief, not to the extent that Hugo can be.
I don’t think he’s worse than Super version Hakan though. Or even first Arcade Edition Hakan. My guess is they left his strengths strong and his weaknesses weak pre disc version to test how things panned out. And I’m hoping the disc version will be the time of a new patch to make smooth things out a bit.

The frustrating thing is losing with Hugo to bad players online and offline then I rematch and whip them with my main(guile) and almost get perfects. The struggle is real lol

Guile to hugo that’s quite a change in play styles. but I know what u mean I’m tempted like this all time but I bite my lip and stick with hugo
oddly enough, most grapplers pay pad since the motion for a 360/720 is easier on pad than stick (e.g. Vangief, Snake Eyes)
I’ve been pretty good about not switching to my main because i lost with Hugo. I’ve been pretty much 100% Hugo online/offline since Ultra came out.
I played Hakan because he was the closest to Hugo in SF4. Back then I secondaried Blanka, Dhalsim and Guile. But I never felt truly comfortable. Now that Hugo’s in the game I have no reason to pick anyone else.
Just curious, were there any Hugo players on stream at CEO? Didn’t see a single one but maybe I just missed something. Didn’t see a single Hawk either sadly.
