Hmmm well let’s see, where to begin? LoL
Well first and most importantly I can’t dash properly. Any type of FADC movements I want to do, I have about a 2% success rate. And then when they do come out I’m so shocked I forget to follow up LoL
Still can’t do TKCS from the 1P side consistently. It just seems like an entirely awkward, forced motion that my wrist doesn’t comprehend following through with. 2P side is much better and works almost every time.
Her b&b c. lk, c.lp, xx c.lk, hk SA has maybe a 10% success rate. For some reason I can’t get her SA to come out.
And just all around akwardness. She’ll sometimes jump forward when I just want her to walk forward. It’s just a very uncomfortable process all around.
Any suggestions? I’m starting to believe I’m just too hard wired from 20 years of using a gamepad and it’s hopeless. Being from Mississippi, there was NO arcade scene here what so ever and I’ve always done all my gaming on consoles…
Tragic Hero,
Take baby steps in learning the stick. Spend a day or two just practicing dashes and FADC. If it helps, I have a video of me doing the cspike fadc cspike fadc Ultra.
In everything you practice, turn on the input display. Watch what you do when you get it right, watch what you do when you get it wrong. Try and make adjustments.
It’s a pain in the butt, I know. I said it takes 2-3 weeks to learn stick, but I was practicing 3 hours a day trying to get everything down. I still don’t have everything down.
I said IF. (not when) So i don’t know.
I’m waiting :-/ still playing with my total broke gamepad, My skill goes up at same pace as my controller wears down, so i stay on same level
I never planned on buying a stick but a couple weeks ago someone in the local scene offered to sell me an HRAP for 60 bucks (+10 for the converter he was useing) and I couldn’t pass it up. Just started to really use it like 4 days ago when one of the Rog’s I used to beat completly shut me down repeatedly. I must harness the powers of stick and TKCS as an opener cause my throw shenanigans are too obvious now.
Mostly just really hard fadcing. Also have problems doing cancels from lights in combos now too ;(
Yeah, just keep practicing. I’ve been playing stick for years but I still sit down in training mode to do reps and work on my problem inputs.
FADC combos were the most unnatural thing to me when I first picked up SF4, but now they’re completely effortless because of constant practice. I still have trouble doing 2x QCF and repeated TKCS on the 1p side, but with every session I spend in training mode, accuracy goes up little by little.
Plus, a lot of players go through experimenting with holds - if you watch people’s hands as they play, they barely hold the stick and will shift their grip around depending on what side they’re on, what they’re doing, etc. If you feel like something is awkward on your wrist, try a looser hold or moving your hand to a different position.
Nothing about playing video games is ‘natural’ - it’s just like playing an instrument or any other kind of manual dexterity - the only way to get good is to keep doing it till it’s muscle memory. But it’s not like being able to use pad will somehow hinder your playing with stick - they’re separate sets of muscle memory that don’t translate to or interfere with each other. Just gotta put in the time, ya know?
New strat:
I invited my friend over to play some SFIV matches, he’s really into super smash bros.
40 win streak!
No he has never played before.
Yes it feels amazing.
I don’t care.
switch to keyboard man, gamepad is horrible imo for cammy
!
Hey guys! I’ve recently started using a stick too, finding it great, I just need a little advice
I’m having some trouble executing a Cannon-Spike motion and Cammy’s Ultra Combo motion from Player 1 side. I’ve got no problem whatsoever with doing it from Player 2’s side, and no matter how much practice I put in I can’t seem to do it consistently using my current grip.
I’m currently using the grip found at this link here:
As Cammy players yourselves, I was wondering if you could share what grip you are using when playing with a fightstick.
Thanks very much in advance - Funk$t@r
i switched from Pad to Stick last March? April?.. the transition was HORRIBLE!.. the simplest moves were verging on impossible… i couldnt walk forward without accidentally jumping… lol…
but i had to migrate to Stick… because i was facing execution limitations with PS3 pad… + my hand used to get sore (yeah try doing Chun Li’s c.lk,c.lk xx EX Legs xx Ultra with pad for 10+ matches and you will get the same feeling )
but then i got used to it… i could block whenever i want to block… walk, dash… jump with no problems… playing charged character is much easier with square gate… soon after i was able to kikouken with ease… Hasan-Shu took me a while to master…
and it took a lot of practice to Haduken and Shoryuken
with practice things will come naturally to you… the more you get familiar with the hand motion (and what feels comfortable for you) the better execution you will get… now i can do all sorts of things… (still not perfect… but 100% better than when i used to play with pad)… and i cant imagine going back…
for me things that i cant imagine being done on pad:
- Viper: Fierce, Feint, Fierce, EX seismo, Burning Kick, Ultra
- Gen: Mk, Hands, MK, Hands (FADC, Mp, Hands, MK Hands?)
- Cammy: TK Cannon Strikes (multiples)
- Viper: Instant Burning Kick
props to the pad players who can
It took a lot of practice for me to switch over for pad to stick (about a month after championship mode was released I properly tried to switch over) and I still haven’t mastered it. Player 1’s side still gives me problems especially for ultra/super/spiral arrow, I find what I need to do is really concentrate on hitting :r: and :l: to complete half-circles, most of my mistakes are ending on :df:
most of my mistakes are because im in P1 side… (missed TKCS, Ultra, accidental Cannon Spike << funny lol )
but whats even more disturbing… CS FADC CS FADC Ultra…
on P1 side… i can do CS FADC CS FADC with no problems at all… the Ultra comes out as Cannon Spike (if i miss it up)
on P2 side… same thing CS FADC CS is perfect… BUT if i miss up… FADC comes out FORWARD!.. (for whatever reason)
I just traded the Sanwa JLF on my TE for a Seimitsu LS-32 because I was curious to play on one. Now I can do multiple TKCS on the 1p side almost as fast as I can do them from the 2p side because of the shorter throw… but I have to be a lot more deliberate with my 2x QCFs. There are pros and cons to every style of stick, as always, heh.
Funkstar: My grip is a hybrid of the Eagle and No Homo (), lol.

It’s comfy because you can rest your hand on the panel and you can do all the motions with just quick flicks of your wrist. But I have tiny Asian girl hands, so… YMMV.
I have whatever knockoff junk is in the crappy SE stick (got it super cheap, so I can upgrade it later) and the only thing I can’t do at all so far is CS FADC Ultra. You have to be super deliberate to get that to register it seems, so it’s basically impossible given the lightning quick input you need off the backdash. Does the Sanwa JLF let you use more subtle quicker motions to get the 2xqcf off? Coz’ that’s the only way I can imagine it being possible.
I find that doing 4+MP+MK, 41236236 3xK for the FADCb Ultra is the best way to remain accurate but fast. Even so, I still screw it up sometimes (like I do the 4MP+MK too fast so the back dash doesn’t happen or I’m too slow on the HCFQCF) and it’s one of the things I spend the most time on in training mode.
I have never played on a stock SE, so I have no idea how Mad Catz’s joystick would compare to the JLF… but just from general experience, I’ve found that the JLF is the best stick for precision but not necessarily speed. Sticks with a shorter throw (eg Namco Hori and Seimitsu LS-32) are better for speed but less accurate.
I’ve heard that the SE joystick is a little tighter than the JLF, so chances are it is less easy to control than a JLF. shrug Plus everyone says it misses inputs all the time, lol, so that could be a factor that can’t be fixed with practice that’s reducing your success rate.
I’m still doubting will this even end
Starting to wonder what the advantage of stick are again.
One funny thing i noticed: i’m trying to use my pad as a stick now (I always used analog stick, but now i grab it with 2 fingers instead of thumb, and controll the button with 2 fingers instead of other thumb), of course it’s not competitive, but it works kinda maybe a good transition for people who plan - or doubt - to get a stick.
and playing with keyboard… na i’ll wreck it then. I still play FPS (ut3) mainly, i need my keyboard
as i mentioned there are things that are just hard to do on pad… (sometimes IMPOSSIBLE! for me at least)…
try going through Vipers hard trials with pad! or Gen…
try MK, Hands, MK, Hands… or Vipers hard trial #3 (imo the hardest in the game)…
with pad i couldnt do a single instant burning kick with viper… but now with stick im able to do all sorts of instant burning kicks… (forward, backward, and neutral)…
i used to have nightmares about Fierce, Feint, Fierce … but now (in training mode)… im able to pull it off (it least i can do it!)…
its just the physical limitation of the pad makes those moves impossible to do…
this is how i feel using the TE stick.

Hahaha FUBAR!
Awsome footage
I just want to thank jchensor for providing tips on how to use stick. It really was a hard journey. I think the biggest mistake you can make when you’re learning stick is switching back to pad when you lose. I think this really hindered my growth. What really helped me was when jchensor said to not move the stick to the edge. Instead, use short motions that don’t hit the edges. This makes your execution faster and more accurate.
Last thing I want to say is that it takes people different amount of time to learn it. It took me 2.5 months to really get used to it and play normally. My older brother recently switched and it took him only 2 freaking weeks! So for those who are having trouble, keep at it. It’s well worth it. Sometimes when my brother is using stick on the ps3, I’m forced to use pad on the PC and I can tell you that stick is much better once you fully adapt.
Well this is a strange one, I can do the bnb from the 1p side at least 60% of the time when I really get going on it in training mode, but on the 2p side I can do it only rarely I can’t seem to get the SA to come out most of the time from that side a good chunk of the time it hits neutral and I get a standing fierce instead when its not really at neutral or doesn’t seem like it and when I do its too late and have missed the link as it is.
Any ideas on why 2p side might be more problematic?
Still can’t seem to incorporate the bnb in actual play either I am either never in range to get it off I really hate cr.jab with some chars or I get the hits going and it doesn’t click in my head to SA.
