How to Stop Worrying and Love the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth - The Ultimate Doctor Strange Thread

mm i think he is better as the second character, just like Dormammu. Strange with +2 bar is a massive threat, with 1 bar not that much. Some characters with high priority and speed on normals can make Strange point game a nightmare. And his assists can benefit in many different ways some teams it would be a waste to play him on point (in my opinion). But yeah, to each his own.

So how has strange developed competitively? Been using him since my 1 char slot identity crisis in the middle of Wesker/??/Doom and he’s neat but has some striking flaws and I don’t want another Ironman fiasco to fall into my lap. I love that shell head but damn was I dissapointed.

Eye is godlike by the way.

Hmm, possible use for Illusion; start of a match with point Strange vs a character in your face, os back-throw/Illusion to combat that starting 50/50 that rush-down players always want. Should negate attempts to hit Strange with a jump attack to punish the ground throw attempt and possibly give you a punish opportunity (Illusion behind opponent recovering in the air). If it’s a problem character and you get the ground grab/air grab punish (?) off, just SoV xfc, kill him and establish corner control and momentum advantage. I can see air dashing up-down and going low beating it, but then that’s the opponent starting in your face and not attacking/defending. =/

Does Illusion work against high/mid-hitting assists?

Pretty good. Neutral game is strong; great projectiles, j.m is an amazing normal that beats a lot of stuff. Midscreen mixups are good, and can’t be evaded by simply superjumping. Once he has an Eye of Agamotto out, ground rushdown comes to a halt.

Corner game is a bit meh, but I’ve been working on that. Mobility is not too good, needs a gtfo assist in select matchups I feel.

Hey, amazing tactic  . But you gotta be careful if the opponent is backed up by an assist with high priority. Imagine for example, Noel Brown team (the most rushdown oriented pro team at the moment), Wolvie attacks Strange, Strange teleports behind Wolvie, but Frank West assist catch him and Wolvie start a 100% combo.

Yeah illusion works against non-projectile based assists, like Sempu bu, Frank shopping cart, akuma tatsu, etc.

started working on the writeups for the guide. if anyone feels like contributing to a particular section, hit me up with a PM. tyyyyy

edit: also going to start recording footage for a condensed version of the guide in video form. any suggestions on what to cover?

so far…

  • team order placement
  • hit confirming and cancelling into Mystic Sword for safety
  • XF kill setups
  • using his assists
  • setting up jump loops with and without the use of Flames of the Faltine
  • basic-intermediate-advanced combos

lol, I had plans to create a video tutorial, myself. but you have better recording gear than I do, I bet

I’d like to see some notes on movement, myself (flight mode, using teleports for evasion, etc)

just my sister’s Canon SLR mounted on a tripod, lol. care to make notes on movement?

TK Flight, using Flight to bypass the number of specials in the air rule, what else?

Better than my iphone :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ll pm you something tomorrow when I’m not lazy.

alrighty. I’ll get started on the recording… as soon as I can find the urge to stop playing Chrono Cross. lmao.

Chrono Cross is beast lol, I don’t blame you

@Alzarath and maziodyne

Can you also do a section on tactics to open your opponents up? I know it’s asking for a lot, but Doctor Strange doesn’t really have the same traditional mixup tools as the other characters in the same vein (and specifically corner setups). He has unsafe blockstrings, no real overhead, and can’t crossup in the corner with his teleport.

yeah no problem. basically my gameplan revolves around spacing and keeping your opponent at a distance ideal for setting up Eye of Agamotto. once you get the Eye out, it’s fair game-- from there you can transition to a defensive game by using the Eye as cover while you throw out Mystic Sword M to put more distance between you and your opponent (better for you if they pushblock!) or offensive game by putting Graces out. tricky part is keeping them grounded because your 3Y will be wasted if they escape via super jumping. I use Strider assist to pin them down. it works sometimes but I need to find a different plan that works better.

getting the Eye out should always be your first priority imho. you’ll need something to cover you during the startup animation which is why beam assists such as Plasma Beam, EM Disruptor and Triple Arrow are Strange’s best friends-- not just for left-right mixups in a pinch. also keep a lookout for happy birthdays as Strange is THE assist killer in this game.

^ Very true. I run Magneto/Strange/Sent and have had many great runs with this team. Magneto alone is good enough to take on a team. You add Strange to that mix with EoA and there are a lot more craziness you can do, like pull assist into it or opponents to tri jump over and go for a mixup or just chip and gain distance for a solid zoning game.

With EoA out most of the time, and you standing next to it or in it, characters that like to teleport (Dante, Wesker, Vergil, Dormammu, etc) will think twice as they’ll get hit and its a free combo for you… especially for Magneto… hypergrav, into whatever and aerial exchange or DHC or etc…

Doctor Strange’s :m: Mystic Sword is to good! It pretty much stops everything! Captain’s shield, Doom’s beam, Magneto’s beam, Ironman’s beamn… you get the idea. It’s priority is just so good (8) and it’s pretty fast. Beats out Magneto’s :l: EMDisruptor. However, it being a projectile, it is still susceptible to HC that is immune to them… I’ll finish this when I get home from work

does Mags’ guard break still work? I think you can do it with EoA too. it’s something like lockdown assist on an incoming character, trijump j.S, then you should be able to get an inescapable throw as they recover. one of these days I’ll definitely get back to playing Mags. maybe on a side team, maybe swap Doom out for Magnus from time to time if I like the matchup better. SoV -> Magnetic Tempest is leagues down in damage compared to SoV -> Sphere Flame though. oh well, guess it’s a good tradeoff for gravity manipulation shenanigans.

actually Strange (Eye)/Magneto (Disruptor)/Doom (Missiles) sounds like a great team with tons of synergy… hmm.

^ yup! That is a great team synergy there and I was thinking about running that team too, but I got to work on my Doom game first. For now, I only use in Heroes&Herald mode, lol.

Yes, that guard break setup still works, but I don’t use it online and because I don’t use it online, I don’t use it at all in live matches, lol.

… continued:

Long range battles can be won using :m: Mystic Sword. Only projectiles that beats it are the slow and have more recovery time. In the case that you are about to get beat, you can cancel the :m: Mystic Sword into SRoR! And to get tricky, you can teleport above them to sneak in an attack.

Orbs are also a must. At least one because your opponent cannot avoid them when fully charged (3 orbs) and does a great deal of hitstun. If they get hit in the air, they are stuck in hitstun until they hit the ground, so you can teleport and get a juggle combo/Impact Loop.

so… a good assist projectile (Magneto’s EM Disruptor, Doom’s Plasma Beam, Ironman’s Unibeam, a bit slow, but good, and Sentinel drones) are all good for Doctor Strange. This helps buy you time to call EoA, lay out orbs, :m: DoD, teleport and catch them in block stun, EoA, sj. FoF, teleport, EoA, etc… good block stun rushdow based on all those tools = good chip damage or if they block wrong and get hit, free combo for you.

He can be played either on point or secondary, but not great as an anchor due to lack of support, though I have won many games with him as my last character and of course, x-factor. Just be careful to not do Impact Palm blindly because the recovery sucks if you don’t cancel into :l: Mystic Sword.

I got some other stuff too, but have been wanting to put some stuff in a vid for you guys to check out.

maziodyne: yo, were you able to reproduce that bug? I sent you a pm regarding the setup and I couldn’t repro, then noticed those weren’t the steps used due to the data that was showing in the next recording. Anyway, keep it up guys!

cough

too late, after 5 minutes of testing, looks like I’m back on dat Swagnus.

Lol its all good, this team is too beast.

most of it’s been covered already, only thing I want to add: mash dat j.:m: =P
