How to Squash Your Meat: Hugo Match Up Thread

I wanted to post this match just to show how effective Leap Attack can be in this match-up

  • Try to trade balls with cr.MP, it’s awesome.
  • U2 balls on block/hit.
  • Against shock, use cr.LP instead of cr.LK. For some reasons, it works better and trades way less.
  • You can EX BB his ultra 1 after he’s in the air.

-red fb is easy to d.d.mk

-ex lariat all neutral jump/back jump fb into bb juggle. Use s.hp for jf air fb

-os ex ms behind meaty hp clap setups if akuma does not have u2. ( ex ms - st.mp = 40% life bar for attempting to teleport )

-st.mp all day.

-akuma’s air buttons have piss poor active frames. Lk bb as aa becomes more viable in this mu.

-ending a round with butt rocket has a chance of making the opponent toss his stick out of the window.

-abuse cr.mp just outside akuma s.hp range. Stuffs everything. Trades will be greatly in your favour.

-punish all blocked dps with clap combos for >50% damage or kara ut reset after lp clap for the kill if you think the opponent has been stunned irl.

-max range jf.hp mixed with empty jump ( at the same distance ) to bait dps. Combo with st.mp if jf.hp hits. Cr.lp xx lk lariat whiffs at this range. Akuma can aa hugo at this distance with st.hk for 30/50 damage(lol)

-st.mp in neutral.

-dives are almost always unsafe on block vs hugo. U1/spd.

-mashing spd/bb vs cammy’s “pressure” is a viable option in this mu. The scales are tipped in hugo’s favour due to cammy’s nerfed damage output.

-Non-meaty ass-to-mouth on viper’s wakeup beats everything except block.

-react to any super jump from 3/4 screen with hk bb/u2 for pain. Use ex bb for the guaranteed damage.

-bb all burnkick mixups on your wakeup. Buffer dp motion and press k on reaction to jump/bk/elbow bullshit. Alternatively, you may choose to stand-block burn kicks to punish with u1.

-ex lariat/ex meatsquasher “mixup” is not viable due to 7f armour breaker.

-abuse st.mp at mid-range. Its a winning distance for hugo. Viper has rubbish buttons. “yomi” hp tk will often trade in your favour.

tl:dr hugo is a hard-counter to viper.

-blocked non-ex daggers are always unsafe.

-st.mp all mk/hk teleports on reaction. Swap with s.hp depending on spacing. Decapre will bait bb with teleport feints.

-ex bb out of non-kd u1 mixups.

-use lights more often when decapre has u2. Any decent decapre will whiff punish all mediums. Use st.mp liberally if decapre walks forward to slap her face for 120 damage with little risk to yourself.

-decapre’s cr.mk xx dagger counterpokes st.mp/cr.mp pretty well. Hugo has no solid answer to this due to walk speed disparity. Use cr.lk xx lk lariat to discourage decapre from abusing this.

If he misses his combo, you can punish EX walldive before it hits the all after you finish blocking.

  • IMO Hugo loses the footsie battle
  • Try not to jump in, Vega can AA Hugo very reliably ( especially at the ranges Hugo wants to jump to close the gap )
  • Haven’t tried this, but meaty clap -> MS will probably catch Vega’s backflip on wakeup
  • You can punish a close wakeup EX Psycho Crusher (after blocking and him crossing you up) with Ultra 2 (I haven’t tested with backbreaker)

Poking game
When trying to poke Honda, watch out for his s.HK, s.MP, s.HP and cr.LP.
Honda’s s.HK when used from far is able to low profile under your s.MP. To counter this, use cr.MP, cr.MK, s.HP or any other of your light normals.

Punishing headbutts on block
HP Headbutt is punishable by Super
Far EX Headbutt is punishable by any light normal, cr.MP and Kara EX UT. Cancelling into L.Lariat as a punish only works from cr.LK.
Close EX Headbutt is punishable by light normals, cr.MP, Ultra 1, all spds and ultra throws if stand blocked.
Close EX Headbutt is punishable by light normals, cr.MP, Ultra 1, LP, MP, EX spd and EX Ultra throw if crouch blocked.

When you’re on knockdown
You’re fucked. Honda’s new EX Oicho buff allows him to just fuck you over on wakeup. He’s** throw invincible for 5 full frames**, meaning that ex spd, super or ultra 1 won’t save you.
If you think he’s going to oicho, then just backdash or jump, there’s not a lot you can do.

Random notes
Telegraphed s.HKs can beat headbutts clean or make the headbutts pass under him.
Jabs and LK backbreaker can beat headbutts from mid/fullscreen on reaction.
The jumping splash always wins from headbutts from fullscreen to midscreen but loses to EX buttslam.
All buttslams are punishable on block by your 2fr spds.

Played a fairly safe Bison yesterday that liked to scissor kick at a safe distance. Afterwards I was wondering would a LK lariat trade with Scissors Kick and leave Hugo better off?

Played my first Elena today. Had no clue what I could punish, when I could punish, or if I could punish anything. Weirdest moves ever with such an awkward speed. It’s like she’s really laggy or something. Wasn’t fun.

General rambling:
DeCrap is really unsafe on a lot of her shenanigans and if you demonstrate that you have a good defence and know how to punish they’ll have no choice but to try to poke you. s.MK and s.HK are popular. cr.MK works really well against s.MK and s.LK xx clap works when counterhit fishing against s.HK.
