How to Squash Your Meat: Hugo Match Up Thread

Tip 1: don’t jump, because cody can sneeze and land an HK ruffian thanks to Hugo’s massive hurtbox

tip 2: Don’t rely on standing HP or EX lariat/squasher, because Cody has a very good armor breaker game

tip 3: buffer backbreaker between Cody’s blockstrings. Codys have this thing where they will often jump in the middle/after their strings to try and mix you up. with good reactions you can nail them out of it

tip 4: Always be looking for Zonk knuckle. Codys feel comfortable charging zonk against Hugo because of his limited mobility. after his strings or the like sometimes, give it a second before you do anything, because he might be planning on trying to zonk counter you. good news is you can SPD it on block.

Tip 5: When he gets the knife, light/EX clap at him a lot. you have very good odds of at least trading with him if he’s poke-happy, which should trade in your favor, as well as knock the knife out of his hand.

Okay the other day I had a few matches with a Hakan player for the first time and it is an incredibly strange matchup. The threat of Hakan being able to cancel into slide and the insane range slide has when oiled can be a bit of a threat if Hugo tries to armor through some of his pokes. Hakan’s weird jump height has caused my Heavy Backbreaker to go above him a few times, not often but at times it’d catch other characters. Trying to use overhead on Hakan with an Ultra 2 just isn’t gonna happen :V

Anyone else had experience in this MU? It’s certainly an odd one.

I think it’s in Hugo’s favour. An un oiled Hakan in the corner can not do a lot.

Can anyone shed some light on the Deejay matchup? I feel like there is very little Hugo can do about slower slasher projectiles

Deejay is Guile light.
Not the good pokes but all the obnoxious specials.

There isn’t that much you can do about those slow projectiles so just block and walk forward.
If they walk with their fireball use st.HP.

I’ve noticed that against a lot of shoto characters fighting Hugo their first instinct when a match starts is to either jump back or throw out a fireball and this happens against Gief aswell. Lately I’ve been occasionally starting matches with a dash forward immediately and going straight for a st.MP to stuff their attempts to throw out a fireball before it comes out or go for a backbreaker if they tried to jump back since Hugo has the reach on his normals to get away with this when an opponent tries to just chuck out something immediately. Quite often after they’ve been slapped they’ll go into a bit of a panic and try to mash out a DP or backdash/jump back again, Hugo landing the first hit can really throw off someones momentum before it’s even began and allows you to take advantage of this with varying mixups but unforunately this can’t really be said for the likes of Guile or Deejay due to their low recovery fireballs :V

Am I just playing the Gen matchup wrong or is it actually pretty difficult?

I think Gen is a terrible mu for Hugo. His quick jump is a nightmare to aa and he has that double hit kick so forget about st.hp. Plus, he obviously has way better footsie tools to poke you to death. I have very limited experience with the mu but I recently had a set with a decent Gen and it was not fun at all.

I’ve found square jump heavy punch is helpful.

Any advice on the Dhalsim match? I pick U2 but his limbs stuff me. I know there are some counters but they are distance and timing specific.

U2 and EX BB punishes instant air Sniper even on hit, so that’s when you want to use that.

s.HP is your friend, as it’ll beat a lot of his limbs if timed well.

Don’t meaty HP Clap OS EX BB because teleport screws with that, so you’re better off OSing c.MK. I think you’ll have enough frames to punish a teleport even on whiff c.MK.

Try to get the life lead and sit back at fullscreen whiffing Lariat for meter whenever possible. It’s hard for Dhalsim to open you up without Tele or Sniper, and both are easily punishable.

Try to jump as little as possible, but when you do, j.MP can be your best friend. It doesn’t have a hurtbox the size of Russia and can beat out some of his antiair options. Trading j.HP with a fireball is one in your favor though, so if you feel the spacing is right go for that.

If you’re super desperate, EX Lariat Focus Attack Backdash LP SPD is something that I find works way more than it should, but it is 3 bars.

Thanks a lot. Will try some of those.

As a Yun main i figured i’d drop this off for you guys regarding catching back dashes with U2.
It doesn’t seem to work on characters with a cartwheel based back dash (yun, yang, cammy, juri)

I haven’t personally tested anybody other than yun, but the hugo player i was playing went and said that it doesn’t work on anybody with that kind of dash so theres that.
either way, i don’t know shit about this character so you guys can confirm or deny this lol

Holy cow you’re right, I tested it myself and it doesn’t work on the twins, Cammy, Decapre, Elena or Juri. Wow this whole time I thought I was doing it wrong on them. Huge thanks for the info.

wow…i didnt know that i was like saying to myself why am i not catching these people with ultra 2

Yeah, it’s kind of dumb but there’s some tech or lack there of for you guys lol

You can catch Yun and Yang, it’s just very specific. If you activate the ultra on the frame where their legs point straight up, they will get caught. The other four are hopeless though.

Does ex backbreaker still catch them atleast? If not then thats one of his best OS he cant use against one of his most difficult matchups ( Juri)

Yes, BBs still work, just not U2.

Any tips in the chun li matchup she can literally just press s.hk to stop most of what hugo can do not to mention her other pokes
