What is the most amount of damage rog’s ultra adds to his combo’s? What is rog’s most damaging combo using Ultra?
Most Damage is: Focus Attack grounded Ultra. lvl3 gets you just about 500, lvl 2 or CH lvl 1 probably gets you about 400 - 450
Most combos into Ultra add maybe 100 - 200 damage. Most damaging hit-confirms are cr.mp xx hp.hb or OH, cr.mp xx hp.hb. OH only does 100 dmg. Ultra after any ex.ru combos adds about 50-75 damage.
Keep in mind these numbers are with full revenge bar. In general the only time using Ultra after a combo makes sense is if it will KILL or if it puts them in the corner giving you positional advantage (or obviously a high damage punish). U1 has so many hits, the only time it gets the damage it deserves is if it’s grounded, and used raw and not combo’d into.
jab link ultra merits mention as it’s a 400+ dmg 4f punish, but it’s hard enough to not make it practical by most Balrog users. There are also special meaty/CH combos into grounded U1 such as meaty lvl1 TAP into U1, or CH cr.mk or CH cl.hk into U1. Dunno how bad ass you have to be to setup AND confirm with them though.
You can lvl1 TAP into U1, grounded? I’ve seen RopeDrink’s videos where he juggles a TAP with U1, but the opponent is airborne/crumpled (I’ve actually integrated that technique into my game). I’ve never seen a TAP combo into U1- didn’t know it could be done. What are the circumstances for this to work, and can it be done with a higher level TAP? Any videos of this would be awesome.
higher level TAP probably needs an FADC. You have to hit TAP REALLY meaty, like with the last active frame as they’re waking up (so late that backdash has enough invincibility to avoid). The higher the level of TAP the more active frames and the more negative it is on block. When you FADC any level tap it’s about the same advantage on hit/block as lvl1.
Here’s an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PL465EB3F77ED8C007&v=B6scIiu8bMg&feature=player_detailpage#t=65s and

Look at the combo counter if you’re not sure if it actually combo’d after the TAP.
Something I’ve been wondering for a bit regards the shimmy cancelled into super. Is the super cancelled from the dash straight once hits are confirmed? OR is it one big option-select, being in the space where it will only hit if the opponent presses a button? OR both?
both, but generally its a hit-confirm. the cr.mp is meant to catch stand-techs, so unlike the cr.mk/st.mk O/S you don’t really do it in a range where it’ll only counter-poke if they press a button. You do it where it’ll be in range for a stand-tech (but out of range for grab). Generally the range to catch a stand-tech will also catch a player blocking standing/crouching or at neutral.
Hey does anyone have a comprehensive list of setups for cr.mk ultra?
most of the setups I think to try don’t seem to leave me with enough backcharge. or reliy on them not fast standing off a headbut which isn’t as tight of a setup as i’d hope.
fwd.throw, TAP, cr.mk. Not exact, but you get your back-charge very early in advance. cr.hk, cr.mk is good as well since you start charging with cr.hk.
what OS’s should i be practicing and going for the most ?
Only three: jab option select sweep, crouch-tech, and focus tech. Those are really the only universal O/S, there are others, but they’re situational/character specific and generally useless unless you can get them 100% of the time. Check out the Option select thread to see what they are and how they work, but generally those are the only ones you should focus on IMO.
What do I do against cats who just wakeup jab like theres no tomorrow. I can never time mine to completely beat out theirs and because of that I can’t frame trap. At this point overheads and focus attacks don’t catch people that often so I have to resort to frame traps and footsies the way Pr Rog does it but if they jab the shit outta me it’s pretty difficult.
Also what 3nigmat1c said is almost everything you need but at a higher level. OS ultras (for example to catch teleports from bison) can be very very useful, especially when you are down on life. Even more so when you don’t have Pr Rog reactions and can’t ultra punish almost every teleport.
you gotta time your meaty’s better. If they can wakeup mash then you’re meaty is off by at least 3f (the fastest jab is 3f). You can use automatic setups like: cr.hk, instant j.hp, cr.lp or fwd.throw, fwd.dash, instant j.hp, cr.lp You buffer the cr.lp’s like you’d do an O/S any the above setups are meant to always be as meaty as possible. Hypothetically if you were to plink cr.hk after the meaty jab setups on hit, you’d combo into sweep.
You could also use meaties with more active frames/range like st.hp or cr.mp. Those are relatively safe on block, but get blown up by DP. Generally if you time a meaty correctly, they cannot mash through your attack. If you use a meaty normal throw, they can’t mash out of that as well (as long as their throwbox is in range).
Yeah I new I was weak on the meaty side of life but I’ve been waiting for you to make an updated meaty/safe jump video or list. You’ve spoiled me man.
But just so I get this straight.
My meaties are
Sweep > instant j.hp > meaty cr jab or throw
fwd.throw > dash > instant j.hp > meaty cr jab.
What can I do after back throw and headbutts?
And by instant j.hp do you mean hp as soon as I get into the air or jump instantly and do a mid jump/deep hp?
Also watching pr_rog loose like that after the 5-0 sweep against korea just made me sad.
:<, sadly I did not watch any of Canada Cup today (assuming that’s what you’re talking about). who did he lose to?
After headbutt, generally, jump.hp, slightly delayed cr.lp is a meaty, it’s just not automatic you have to eyeball it (and that’s where the issues lie. When i say instant j.hp, i really mean instant jump, and you do j.hp right before you touch the ground so the active frames of your j.hp are cancelled by your ground recovery, that’s what allows you to buffer your cr.lp and for it to come out as soon as you land. Set your dummy in training mode to no block and do the automatic setups off of fwd.throw and cr.hk. You should be able to meaty cr.lp, cr.hk and combo. That’s one of the ways to know you’re doing it perfect.
I did a meaty video/article a LONG time ago. So i suppose that means you’re in luck.

There are also some other setups for other attacks in the O/S article.
Yeah I definitely saw your meaty and safe jump vids and that thread but they are getting slightly outdated. Thanks for all the info though lol and clearing things up you are a life saver. ALSO WHEN WILL YOU MAKE YOUR NEW SAFE JUMP VID???
Finally isn’t the safe jump after f.throw dash cr.lp jump in? Or is that for back throw because I see it a lot.
The safe jump from bwd.throw is bwd.throw, fwd.dash, j.hp
The safe jump from fwd.throw is fwd.throw, fwd.dash, cr.lp, j.hp
AFAIK, there aren’t any other automatic safe jumps. Technically the only Untechable knockdown Balrog has that can’t setup a safe jump or meaty is U2, all of the other ones can, but i don’t know of any other automatic safe jumps other than those from sweep and throw. There are others off of U1/Super, dash low, smash and headbutt, but you have to eyeball the safe jump and/or meaty timing. Some of them they can tech or not tech to negate the safe jump etc. So the ones from sweep and throw are the only ones you can get 100% of the time and your opponent not avoid them.
As far as another video, it’ll probably be a long time. I might get the time to do another punish video or a matchup specific video, something of that nature, but unless there’s a lot of new tech in terms of meaties and safe jumps that really warrants a video, i’ll probably not touch on this topic specifically again.
First of all damn.
Second, how does PR Rog setup his meaties because he never gets jabbed out of pressure. Does he just eyeball it because enigmatic those automatic meaties didn’t work for me. If he does just eyeball it what visual am I looking for because I keep getting jab mashed on wakeup.

From what i’ve seen of PR, he doesn’t use “setups” so i assume he eyeballs it, and along with the high level maxim of “I don’t do anything on wakeup even if It’s unsafe” that’s probably why he doesn’t get mashed out. Like I said earlier, if you do the correct meaty. I say correct because there are some characters who are very difficult to meaty jab properly, but luckily they’re not character who it’s terribly useful against like Zangief. They are forced to block the jab, get CH/hit if they’re pressing a button or not blocking or backdash. They cannot jump (since you can’t block when you’re jumping).
Practice the automatic setups and try to link cr.hk. All of the automatic setups (I believe) are made to hit on the second active frames so they’re +8 on hit and +5 on block. You should be able to link cr.hk without CH. That’s the easiest way to practice getting the setup right. Practice, practice, practice, as in don’t try to go use it in a match, but go into training mode, set the dummy to no block, and try to get cr.lp, cr.hk using both automatic setups over and over again. When that works, then try it in a match. I believe you’ll have more success than current. The setups are very EXACT, no eye balling or wait a frame here or wait a frame there. Meaning they’re 100% tight, if you’re off by a frame they will not have the intended effect.
