I’m Irish, and Im pretty sure if Capcom had an Irish character he’d probably be called “Paddy McSpud”. He would probably be a bare knuckle gypsy boxer with ginger hair, freckles, carry a sack of potatoes that he can throw like Cody’s rocks and drinks pints of Guinness to alter his special moves like Hakan.
His win quote would probably be “top of the mornin to ya” (which we never say) and his Story would probably revolve around Bison stealing his Lucky Charms. But it wouldn’t bother me in the slightest, id merely cringe at worst, does it bother any of you who have characters from your respective countries in the game ?.
I was going to lambaste you for posting a typical swm (single white male) thread, but that’s an awesome idea for a character. His alt should be a leprechaun outfit and his BGM should be a remix of Sunday Bloody Sunday.
I find it amusing and colorful. Really, people are wayyyyy too sensitive about this kind of stuff. Personally, I’m glad Capcom hasn’t gone the neutered way of political correctness.
i think capcom does a good job of representing nationalities tastefully and/or in good nature. yeah there may be hints of stereotypes there… (rufus being a loud fat fast talking american, or balrog being a platinum chain wearing money hungry black man…) but imo its all done in fun. ive never really taken offense to it to be honest.
To be honest i like it,and i miss a lil bit the racist circus that was SF2
Nation/stereotype this was SF
Now is more oriented on blowjob main market zone, just watch how many Japanese/USA characters are in the cast
I like it more when the spirit was more about have a fighter for each country
Stereotype is’nt equal of bad
Vulcano Rosso was a total mix of some sterotype about italians… for example in his moveset there are italian words about motors, food, monuments, volcanos. Reference about sport cars and hairs like in some crazy fashion show
Basically way more italian than Rose, that just had the “fashion style”
Stereotypes become bad just if they chose that an italian character must be like SuperMario (MetroCity stage,LOL)
The only thing that i can hate is this, keep the homeboy-hero (Ryu) as the only(or close) cool character and use the rest of cast as freakshow… now SF seem a lot less Ryu-Ken centric, but the stereotype appeal is slighty gone
I mean how stereotypical is it that the main character’s is Japanese and his name just happens to be Ryu? What was wrong with calling him Tom? Or maybe Andrew?
Well I’m rather fond of the way they did Dudley, the line “Well, come on then” really was English, it’s like they wen’t with the steryotype (tea drinking posh bloke) but also left just a little something that most English people would recognise from real life with that line, not sure weather it was intentional or not but it was rather nice.
from what ive read on forums i think a similar connection with hakan and his red skin is what made his design so well received by people of turkish descent, or those who are fond of turkish oil wrestling. sun burn FTL. (not that i would know personally… lol) incorporating relatable aspects into the character designs is i think what separates them from being stereotypical or racist.
Dunno about the music, but I could see him having a move similar to Bang from BlazBlue’s Furinkazan, except it would be called “Riverdance Install”. The River Dance theme plays and Paddy suddenly goes all Michael Flatley on your ass!, giving him the ability to Irish dance on downed opponents!.
I dont take offense to how insane and unkempt Boxer and his misaligned hairline are portrayed in the game. I will, however, say that Balrog is by far the ugliest looking character imo, but then again so wasn’t Mike Tyson lol. So capcom was pretty spot on with this one lol
wasn’t it said that they made C.Viper a american because they thought american gamers would really like her?(which explains why she has a action movie/spy thing going on)
