If we end up using gems I hope we’re at least going to agree on banning all DLC/exclusive gems…and we shouldn’t even buy them to play online or with our friends, just ignore they exist.
If dlc gems end up being a failure, capcom will realize we’re not as stupid as they thought and we’ll never have to deal with anything like this in future games.
If, instead, people will end up throwing their money at Capcom as usual, you can be sure that they won’t stop there and in future games we’ll have even more day-one dlcs with gems, characters and even ultras/supers.
They already tested us with SF4 costumes…people showed them that they were willing to pay to unlock content that was on the disk and ready since the arcade version came out (I’m probably one of the few people who played that game since it came out and I never bought dlc costumes, not even for my main character) and now they’re trying to milk us even more.
From the looks of more recent builds being put out it looks like making your gem picks is right on the character select screen. There’s no doubt it’ll take some time, but my guess is people will know what gems they want to use already and have no problem picking them out. I think banning them would be ridiculous, capcom knows to make the gem system something easily usable and customizable even from the character select screen.
My vote was just to ban DLC gems because in the case that some are console specific, it’s not fair to everyone. Also the gems that are already in the game sound inclusive enough to anything you could need so what kind so any DLC would just be variations on the speed/attack/defense/meter/assist ones that already exist. Unless capcom’s DLC is crazy godlike no one is going to buy them.

Ugh. Look. After the game is content complete and sent to QA for the last rounds of testing, there’s like two months before the game comes out. If you actually have to download it, it’s exactly the same as stuff that’s released at any other time.

Let me say this again: In general, day one DLC is designed after the initial game is made.
Perhaps that is true of some companies, but obviously not Capcom.
Another example is Fergusson of Epic stating that they had completed their first DLC “well before they shipped”
On-disk DLC pretty much flies directly in the face of your statements about how DLC is designed. There isn’t a hard set rule. Hell, the preorder gem packs for SFxT were announced back in december, but as of Early January SFxT hadn’t gone gold yet.
They should leave them and its up to the players to buy them. People pay thousands of dollars for trading card games at the highest level. I think people can spend a few bucks on some gems for a Streetfighter game.
I’m not saying I like the idea of paying for something that should come with the game. I just think dumbing down the game to make it cheaper for people is lame.
Are you paying attention at all? The game is finished a LONG FUCKING TIME before it ships. So, yeah, obviously.
Preorder bonuses are not the same as DLC.
There was discussion that Cody/Guy would be premium cost to use according to Lupinko. This was long before the game went gold.
Also Capcom was openly discussing that there would be additional DLC costumes for character customization back in NOVEMBER. Well before the game went gold.
Allow the Attack/Defense/Speed gem presets. People sorting through 100+ gems before each match is dumb. Think how long matches would take with buttons checks AND gem checks.

We shouldn’t even call them DLCs, cause you’re not downloading anything, you’re just unlocking stuff that is already in the game and the programmers have already been paid for…unlockable content, that’s how we should call it: ULC
Playing in a tournament, you’re going to know before hand what gems you’re going to select, so that won’t be much of an issue.
If you mean simply scrolling through them, I agree, that would be annoying. Hopefully this tournament patch Capcom releases will alleviate that issue.
I could tell you right now, I’m almost positive Capcom won’t design it with having preset load outs, as that completely defeats the purpose of the gem system in the first place.
Preoder gems = People who open their wallets early get more gems.
DLC gems = People who open their wallets after buying the game get more gems.
Different shit, same smell.
Even if it does let you choose at the character select screen, it’s still going to take a while to get it set up for each player.
Also I thought there were 3 presets (attack/speed/defense) that were always available, and then a few custom slots that the player chooses for themselves, but hey I dunno.
Well, in some sense I can kind of sympathize with developers on that, because in reality the game is better than the alternative. It fucking sucked to see the “you can’t see this costume, asshole” for the other costumes in SF4. So from an end user perspective I’d rather have it on the disc than taking up space in my (puny 12GB) fridge. I mean, I’d have paid 5 bucks to get Hidden Palace in my copy of Sonic 2, so maybe I’m just a sucker.
I don’t think that’s the evil part. The evil part is Prince of Persia having a super unsatisfying ending and then DLC to continue it (which didn’t actually help so they probably just wrote a shit story instead of scamming us intentionally, but still), and the fighting game tradition of making the same game 5 times before having any new ideas.
All that said though, this preorder gem stuff really is shady as fuck. I really hope we don’t get real DLC; stuff like adding new gems doesn’t work if you can’t do it the free to play way and make players able to earn it by playing the game.
Yes and no. I can see you are playing devil’s advocate in this but if they already shipped the product to you than you shouldn’t have to pay extra to access it.
I’m going to use a metaphor here, and I know a lot of people are going to pick it apart due to the price difference in the objects I’m comparing. Don’t bother, I’m only using this as an example because the basic PREMISE is similar, there is no equivalent in terms of pricing or importance.
A lot of people say “well you don’t have to buy the DLC it is optional stuff.” When you go and buy a car you are able to pay extra to purchase optional features for the car. The thing is, if you choose NOT to purchase these optional features, they don’t leave the features in the car and use a special dealership key to prevent you from using them. Any options you purchase are not in the car, period.
The ONLY reason they can get away with this sort of behavior is because they are selling VIRTUAL goods which have unlimited supply and no shelf space. Once the object is created there is no further costs, ever. When you sell a product on a shelf you still have to purchase the shelf space, and you have to use materials for creating additional products when you run out. Plus if a product doesn’t sell then you have excess product left on the shelves that you already paid for that is counted as a loss. Virtual goods however are sold on a 1 to 1 ratio, the product has zero overhead, and once you pay for the initial development costs the upkeep costs are next to nothing. Even wtih ACTUAL DLC instead of disk locked content. The cost to host and send the files is miniscule compared to the cost of printing diskes/boxes/ect and shipping them to stores.
Frankly the fact so many companies still sell their digital goods for the same price as their virtual goods (60$ on steam/gate/impulse for a game) is rather insulting.
