How should TOs handle the gem system? Easy. Don’t even pick the game up.
This game wasn’t made for the scene and that’s obvious. Just because it has Street Fighter in it’s name and is made by Capcom doesn’t mean we have to pick it up.

this times a million
Yes but we’d like to , or at least some of us do. That’s why we’re trying to find a workable solution.
That’s unfortunate.
If you need to have a thread months before a game is released to find a way to get it in tournaments than it isn’t worth picking up. I imagine it’s already enough work setting up tournaments with straight forward games like Street Figher 4, MvC3, etc. and the last thing any TO wants is MORE work and MORE stress.
Thing about that is that if we end up using no gems or a standardized gem set then it’d be around the same amount of work as compared to other games
I just don’t think we should dismiss the game entirely before it even comes out
Many competitive genres have customization and yet have no problems. Tournaments just need to organize for it better. League of Legends has a way more complex customization system and they have great, organized tournaments. The same is true for many other games.
I have faith that fighting games TOs can do the same.
I know other genres have it (I used to compete in FPS/third person shooters) but those tournaments were run on strict timing. If I’m not mistaken, a lot of fighting game tournaments do not. I believe a tournament just recently was a few hours off-schedule.
To be honest my problem is more with Capcom and not the game. As I said earlier, this game isn’t made for the scene. I know they’re a business and money comes first but I hate developers/publishers who spit in the face of their customers. Do they think these same non-hardcore fighting game players they are targeting are going to support this game and it’s inevitable 400 iterations? They didn’t run out to go buy SSF4 or SSF4 Arcade Edition. We did.
I think it’s time we draw a line. Charging money for gems which they keep saying is crucial to the game is retarded. DLC should only be aesthetic (maps/stages, costumes, etc.) and not important gameplay elements that will affect the way the game is played.
League of Legends has very long games (reducing match times is an active concern for pretty much every single game modeled after DotA… and DotA itself) and a completely different tournament scene, but the customization aspect still wastes time. Even with full rune unlocks. I’d like to see a League of Legends tournament with 600 teams some day though.
Saying “tournaments need to organize for it better” is very dismissive even if it doesn’t mean to be. The fighting game tournament scene predates pretty much every other competitive videogame, these people aren’t idiots. If a concern has been voiced that means a real problem exists.
And, this attitude, ladies and gentlemen, is why fighting games will NEVER evolve. And, don’t kid yourselves…they NEED to evolve soon. This incremental BS isn’t going to work forever.
While the concerns expressed by the community are valid, I have a valid concern of my own.
Won’t this attitude discourage creativity from fighting game companies in the future? Must the community ONLY embrace fighting games that fit in the 20 year old box created by SF2? How is this genre ever going to evolve to the next step, if we only support games that look and play like the games we’ve been playing for 2 decades?
Which comes first the game or the tournament? Shouldn’t the GAMES be dictating how TOURNAMENTS are run? Rather than having the TOURNAMENTS dictate how the GAMES are made?
Gems have the potential to be REALLY interesting (I’d really like them to release more info about them, so we actually know what we’re talking about here). If time and money are a concern, then just ban gems that aren’t unlocked from the start. Use a blank save state. Done. And, hopefully, Capcom make the character select timer sort of fast, so that you can’t waste time dickin’ around on the Gem select screen…have your gameplan ready before you enter the tourney.
But, please, let’s not blindly turn our backs on companies trying to spice things up in this stagnant genre.
Players should be dictating how tournaments are run, and they always will be. This is an internal concern of this community, not a game design issue. The DLC nature, sheer number and exclusive nature of some of the gems coupled with the inability to disable them are what are really bad. These aren’t solvable issues. These aren’t things you need to wait on till the game is released.
SFxTekken is not spicing things up in a stagnant genre. It is literally “Capcom fighter” + everything they can stuff into it. It’s the same basic template no matter how many meters they add. The tag dynamic is probably the only novel thing here (to Capcom fighters at least). So no, I don’t think it will stifle creativity. Even if it does, Capcom sure could use some creative stifling right now.
Edit: The particular issue of being ready with your Gems before a tournament; have you considered people changing Gem specs between matchups? This was already brought up.
(oh and this isn’t a rebuttal or anything, everything you say is fair)
I apologize if it was dismissive, but I said I believe fighting game tournaments will adapt just fine. Like you said, it’s the more “experienced” competitive scene, and it will know what to do. We’ve dealt with change before, and always managed to have great tournaments.
I just don’t think it will take that long to customize gems. Specially if the game is geared toward the casual crowd, which seens to be the intent, since they don’t like to config only to have a versus match. Guess will just have to wait and see.
But I’m trying to stay optimist just to have a Zangief/Asuka team with Speed gems. Can you imagine a Gief with full speed boost?
You must have me mistaken. I have no problem with the gem system or the change in direction that Capcom is taking. (Although I love ST and it will always be #1 in my mind)
My problem is how they are handling it. Giving out different gems for pre-orders and having DLC gems is absolutely retarded. If it’s an important and crucial gameplay element, EVERYONE should have access to EVERY gem. So either Capcom is bullshitting and it’s not a crucial gameplay element and they refused to give us the option to turn it off (because then that means they know it’s a bad feature) or they’re just absolutely retarded.
I’m thinking if tournament hosts will have difficulties with gems, i just think that they should use the basic packs to save time and money.
I fully agree. They are trying something different on a different game. What’s the problem?
If they said that this was to happen in Street Fighter 5 or Tekken 7, then I could understand the concern (changing the formula of a series). But creating a new formula for a new series? Go ahead, experiment.
If it works, great, we have a new series. If it doesn’t work, skip it (like we did with Street Fighter: The Movie and Street Fighter 3D).
best post Ive seen in this thread
you know capcom isn’t the only company that makes fighting games right? This game really isn’t anything new, they just took dissidia’s accessory system and somehow fucked that up even farther in here. If anything this game is just more capcom bullshit with even more fancy glowing stuff so when you hit your friend he grows a mustache LOL GENIUS ONO, now wheres my final smash?
but in all seriousness, how can you even say “playing games that have been the same since 20 years” when 3d fighting games even exist. All with uniqueness to them, from tekkens deceptive simpleness into deep frame fighter. To virtua which actually recognizes that “hey the 99% of the world is scrubs, maybe we should teach them how to ACTUALLY PLAY THE GAME”
not too mention numerous “anime fighters” or “air dash fighters” that have reinvented motion in 2d fighters and introducing numerous new mechanics, from bursts to air blocking. Don’t even get me started on the character archetypes that they have reinvented or the mindset you have to have going into every fighting game differently from the defensive sf4, to the psychic levels of sf3 where knowing your opponent actually rewards you heavily. Capcom might be getting the most exposure, but they aren’t even close to flagshipping the genre as they were 10 years ago.
the fact that you even thought fighting games were getting stale only shows how close-minded and seemingly fanboyish of capcom you are. I almost feel sorry for you.
Whether games are stale or not is not the point of the thread, is how to deal with them in tournaments? I’m still firmly on the you guys should let it ride.
–snip–
I think this thread causes more negatively then any good or saying anything remotely postive to hype up this game…just kills the hype for this game with all this speculating IMO and this thread of course carries a negative vibe obviously already calling for banning etc. etc.
so yeah , i would maybe like this thread if it came out when the game has actually been played by many so we can know the gem system more intelligently and know how it works.
capcom really doesn’t think of these things, why should they care about 10k tourney regulars. When they are marketing to 10s of millions, probably more
RAWR! I TYPE IN HUGE FONT BECAUSE IM AN ATTENTION SEEKER!
Obviously you know it wasn’t worth reading which is why you put the ridiculous font size to draw people in.
