How should TOs handle the Gem System? (READ THE OP, THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BALANCE)

Catherine is a much more competitive, balanced, and strategy based game than a lot of fighters

Auto tech would break the game. Anyone without a command throw, fast overhead, or unblockable setup would be screwed entirely, especially if their opponent is a strong zoning character. 3S-style techs like SFxT is using resets the situation, meaning there would be zero incentive to ever try and tech throws with that gem on. All you would have to do is wait for them to try and throw you and you automatically get free space. As long as you manage to build enough meter before they get in on you again (which doesn’t seem hard), you’re practically invincible. It’s far worse than auto guard.

That said, I still think the Gem system is an interesting concept and I look forward to it. The game is still in development so overpowered gems like auto tech can be changed. My main concerns are how Capcom will optimize the selection process for tournaments, what the pre-order exclusive gems do, and how often they are planning to release paid DLC gems.

That’s cool. I’m not hating on it.

I figured that would be the case. Consoles should have things like “profile cards” or some way to quickly transfer data from one machine to the other so you can keep better track of things like win/loss rations, customizations etc. I do have to ask, though, has that “ghost patch” issue you mentioned ever happened? My PS3 is pretty much connected most of the time when I’m hosting offline casuals and we’ve never had any problems related to the connection. I’m guessing you are talking about the one time that it MAY happen and could potentially ruin a grand final.

The only other option I can think of is making the Gem selection menu as categorized as possible. That way Gems can be found without needing to scroll through huge lists and stuff like that.

Auto block gem in action and how it works
pros of it

not an out of control mechanic, u still need to block if u do not want all ur meter gone

defiant cons of it

this gem obviously does NOT give license to not block at all, u lose all ur meter noobs if u do that

mindless speculation b4 knowing the facts

well
this is for TO and how they should deal with the System~ as there are still people on the fence about it…and i commented about those in the actually Gem thread…they help my theories~

I wish there was a way to carry around something where it would have you GEM set up. Kinda like Pokemon (LOL) tournaments where you can carry around your game cartridge in your ds.

But this isn’t pokemon, this is a fighting game, so I vote to ban it.

As I said, this has nothing to do about balance and all to do about logistics.

As I also, said, anyone who brings gets reported for posting shizz concerning balance gets infracted for derailing.

listen to seth about gems and so forth

Yes, NetherRealm released a patch a couple of days before a major this year. For MK9, the PS3s were used and the second newest build was played because the consoles were to be taken offline prior to the tournament. It isn’t ruining the tournament in-between matches… it’s ensuring that there is enough time for TOs to ensure that they use a build that doesn’t have an exploitable bug.

In other words, latest build is one month old. New patch said to be out on the 1st of the following month. Tournament is on the second. The TO will update all the consoles to the latest build before the 1st of the new month. Said consoles will be offline for the duration of the tournament and not be running the then latest build. This is how it is a logistics problem, especially for updates like AE which are over a gigabyte.

Profile cards would be useful, but there is no system in place to accommodate this. The same problem arises with regards to using USB keys I mentioned previously.

Right now I’m really thinking Gems should be banned solely based on the fact that the way they appear to be set up is basically a tournament organizer’s nightmare.

After reading Keit’s article on the front page I feel like there is an option that he didn’t include.

Just allow the gems that are on the game and unlocked from the start.

We’ll call these the "tournament viable gems" and be done with it. If there are 50 or so gems right from the start it really shouldn’t be a problem and people can still get creative.

Didn’t Ono say that there would be a couple hundred Gems unlocked from the start?

That’s more than enough, if true.

The problem is if we need to unlock them. It would be an even worse nightmare to be honest

I can’t see how there can be 100s of gems that affect gameplay. Perhaps most of them are just aesthetic stuff, kinda like how you unlock colours in SFIV by playing the game? 10 aesthetic items per char = 10 gems per char = 10 x 30+ chars = 300+ gems.

I’m thinking there may be a bunch of gems with the same effect, but with different activation requirements.

Say Gem #98 is +10% damage, activated after landing teching a throw. Gem #99 is +10% damage, activated after a successful cross rush attack. Gem#100 is +10% damage, activated after blocking 5 normals in a row.

There should be one more voting option on the pool: “Wait for more information before making a decision”.

We, players, are entitled to voice our opinions, but this is too speculative. Gems could be balanced customizations, pay-to-win or somthing else, but we need more info. First we need to know what are the gems (we know the atributes of less then 10 out of hundreds).

It’s just like grooves, meters, ultras, cancels and everything new we first hated then come to accept: Capcom will give it a try, get it wrong, fix it in a patch and then we will embrace it. It’s the circle of life, minus an Elton John song.

I don’t know why people are so hung up about this. Yes, it’s annoying, but once you have unlocked everything you need, you can copy the save over to any systems that haven’t.

I’ll also assume that most people lending systems to be used for tourneys are going to be playing these games too, and therefore, will more than likely have unlocked everything too.
